Corner Support for Granite with no Cabinet

Hi everyone,

I am designing my office with kitchen cabinets and have some questions surrounding the support of the granite. I want to leave as much room open underneath as I can and worked with the designer at Home Depot to come up with this:

My concern is that I will not have enough support for the granite. He said I could use "L" shaped support brackets with gussets on every stud but I'm not convinced that will do it.

In the pic you can see the span of granite (the 2x4 or steel "L" bracket ledger board would be under of course). I really do not want to put a cabinet in the midddle or any kind of post but I worry that this proposal will not be sufficent support of the granite.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Well, this is what I would do. You see the skirts/supports at the front edge of the granite? Make them out of something substantial. Then I would continue one of them over to the opposite wall. The other one straight one attaches to the first one, as does the one at 45 deg.

Thanks for the reply. Can you give me some more information? I'm having a hard time picturing what you are describing.

The center "skirt" is just a false front but the two to the left and right will be knee drawers used as keyboard trays.

"I don't know how the counters are secured to the cabinets. " Gravity and sometimes some caulk/silicone. It is more just to hold them in place while joints are made. The slabs are more than heavy enough to stay put (short of large overhangs) especially after the sections are joined together. You do not need to do much of anything to the cabinets.

Thank you for your help. I believe they installed a 2x2 or 2x4 piece of wood horizontally within the top potion of the cabinet and then screwed it in place, then screwed the 24" metal support from the top. The cabinets are 1/2" plywood box construction, so hopefully that helps as well. The metal supports are about 24" long. I thought they were putting another metal support in the middle of the two shown, but that did not happen. Now they would need to remove the entire slab of granite to install more supports.

I know of no reputable fabricator who would even attempt such a thing. Yes, it's a big deal. Corner cabinets have very little supporting the granite in the first place. Adding in a diagonal seam even without a sink is something most reputable fabricators won't do. It's just too weak a joint that is unsupported. The proper way to do a corner sink is to cut a huge square that fits the corner sink cabinet (usually 42" but with your sink, probably a 48" corner cabinet, and I hope it even fits that) and then "lop off" the corner that would hang over the cabinets into your aisle. This give you one large continuous piece of granite to support the sink without the weak spot of a seam anywhere too close to the sink. (Sometimes if one side of the sink counter isn't too much longer than the cabinet, the fabricator will try to do that whole piece out of a single piece rather than seam at the cabinet edge.)

Replace, replace, replace! in my opinion. You deserve a new flawless countertop, that is what you payed them for. They would not like it if you handed them only one half of a check which had been torn in half in payment. Please don't settle, and please don't pay them until they make it right. Just my humble opinion.

Well, I am not sure the keyboard drawers are compatible with my idea. I meant that the two skirts to the left and the right would be load bearing to support the granite. Let's consider the left skirt. On one end, it would be attached to the cabinet to its left. It would then run all the way to the wall, and be attached to the wall or to your ledger board. Then, consider the skirt on the right. It would be attached on one end to the cabinet, and on the other end it would be attached to the LEFT skirt in the middle of the span of the left skirt. The center skirt would attach at 45 deg. to both of them.

So basically building a frame underneath? If so that is what I was thinking however the way I am picturing that is that the support of the frame would come primarily from the back wall as the front part would be floating.

The other idea I was thinking was a plywood base but I am not sure how to work that in without it looking stupid.
