latches or knobs on cabinets

To all of you with "period kitchens", if you have latches on your cabinets, how do you like them? We are redoing a kitchen in a 1925 Georgian Colonial. We have a couple of latches in our bathrooms and I find them charming. I love the look and am drawn to use them in the kitchen. I wonder though if I will still find them charming having so many in the kitchen. Your comments are appreciated!

I won't know until tomorrow - that's when DH is putting ours on the upper cab doors. We only have three doors so I don't anticipate it being a problem for us. We will probably put them on the upper doors of the hutch DH is making, too.

Btw, we ordered ours from Horton Brass. We also ordered our hinges from them. Excellent quality! And quick service. Just in case you need a rec. : )

We used them on the uppers and on the larger pantry cabinets in our kitchen. We put glass pulls and knobs on the lowers. We haven't minded the latches at all.

i'll have to take some pics of my still-not-finished kitchen, but i have the ice box latches from cliffside industries and -no kidding, they are The. Best. Thing. Ever! my cabinets are beaded and for some reason i remember having some sort of conversation with the cabinet maker ...and i showed him the latch and he told me the latches would work out just fine. i have them on double as well as single doors. i mixed my hardware: the latches, some drop pulls, lots of handle pulls, cup pulls and (why not?) even some crystal knobs. you should really buy one of the cliffside latches. when my sample arrived i couldn't put it down! everyone notices them when they see the kitchen. nobody makes something like that because nobody would do that. and i agree with mike its the easiest fix. if you have 2 3/8 back set and get 2 3/4 backset bolt and try to get it to work but it still would look like ?hit.

The bottom cabinet underneath stores dog food, treats, etc. The drawers store less used silverware (serving pieces and such), cloth napkins (we use these daily), and infrequently used tools like a potato masher. The cubby space is currently holding our silverware, which I store in an antique tool box that can be carried to the dining room table as needed. The big cabinet above holds snacks, bread, canned goods and the like. The cabinet at the top is currently empty--it used to hold seldom used platters and probably will again when I unpack them from the garage. To the right is all shelves. These shelves hold our plates, bowls, cups, mugs, lunch boxes, storage containers, and water bottles. The pull out counter is where I pack the kids lunches. It is deep enough to hold both of them, opened flat. It's is also lower so when my five year old wants to help, she gets set up there. The tall narrow white cabinet is the original ironing board cabinet. It had been converted to spice storage before we moved in and I left it that way. It is just the right depth to hold single rows of spice containers.

I had heard of Horton Brass before on this forum. Will probably order from them. Thanks for the comments. Anymore from anyone else?

I did not use latches, but I did use Horton Brasses for my cup pulls and knobs. I second Angelcub's rec :-) They were fast and gracious, and their products are of fantastic quality.

Mary, sorry it took so long to get back to you. DH put the latches on the cabs and I love them. The knob that gets turned is small so beware of that fact if you go for the same latches. It doesn't bother me - I don't have large hands - but it might someone else. We bought the smaller latches, number is SL-4, size is 1 9/16"x 1 13/16" - hth!
