I just posted the details on the "I finally picked a countertop" thread. Still can't believe it....

When we first picked out our stone and put the deposit down, they went through the ceremony of putting your name on the slab. Ha! that meant nothing. I was insistent about picking the part I wanted on the peninsula so I had to go revisit "my slab". It was not our slab. They convinced me that it was by saying that it is part of the same lot and they are all identical like a slice a bread. I felt so uneasy that I sneaked back in to take a picture to compare with pictures we took from our original slab. To my surprise, that slab was different from the one I saw last. huh? I told them I wanted to see the exact slab that was going to be used in my kitchen and that's when they told me that they just take the next available slab based on the schedule so it doesn't matter if your name gets put on a slab, that slab will go to the next job scheduled. He guaranteed me that our job was next so I was looking at my slab. It worked out because I happen to like that slab more than the original but what if I didn't? Granted, they were all in the same family but to me a slab is like a painting. You fall in love with certain variations, pattern, coloring that may not be present in the next slab depending on stone. I came very close to showing up when they were actually cutting my stone, (which I would recommend to anyone that is really concerned) but definitely try to "visit" a few days prior to fabrication and ask to see the stone they are going to use for your job.

"In terms of my incremental usage of electricity from the grid, it's not the base load that counts, it's the peak load that matters." I was talking about the system you're drawing from. What's called the base load is the production to meet expected demand with a margin for error built in. Your suddenly increasing your draw from the system because you turn on your heat pump instead of burning wood will have no net effect on emissions. Zero. The electricity you use will have been produced in any event and either used by you or get wasted. "Our net electricity usage is highest in winter and goes to zero in the summer months." That's because your solar panels are generating the power you use in the summer so there's no draw from the system. But little or no production in the winter, so you pull from the grid. When systems are turned down but still have excess generation in wintertime so your home's incremental usage (because of your concern for global warming) has no net effect. Though retired for a few years, several of my clients were involved in the power industry (across many states), from which I learned (among many other things) that electricity usage is highest in the summer and lowest in the winter. I believe it's true throughout the US. I'm informed by those in the industry, how about you? Bye.

You can find the tiles by taking a broken piece to supply places in the area and ask them to help find a match. Or, if they have a guy who does this, he may know where to get roofing supplies.

It could be cobbled together if you get every last piece of it... but it won't look like it was unbroken once it's done. It's kind of hard to tell from the few pieces in the second pic, but I don't think the break looks like it could be worked into looking like purpouseful art with repair.

Bummer, being that close to a sink and having it snatched away can be very traumatic (I've seen it up close). Good luck on the replacement search.

I'm going tomorrow to look at another slab. Wish me luck. You can read the details on my other thread where I excitedly posted about finding my soapstone. Thanks for all of your kind words.

I truly hope your saga will end in grins.

In my 2001 house, we chose a solid surface material in a color I loved. Installation went well except for some hand-prints that were left on the counter. Hmmm.

I couldn't get them off! And every time anything with any grease/oil was set on the counter, I got a grease stain. I talked to the installer, who had never heard of this problem. I worked with it a few more months. Eventually the manufacturer came out and looked, and traced it to a "bad batch of resin." He had already replaced one countertop in a tiny kitchen, and now he had our huge one to replace. And they wouldn't do that same color. I compromised on a different one, and ended up liking it much better. I'd do it again in the new house but can't get the product here.

I'm hoping your experience will be like mine and you'll love your new one even more!
