Do I have to worry about this little chip on new silgranit sink?

My apologies for starting another thread but decided best to remove all the packing from my new prÃ¯Â¿Â½cis large sink and look at the bottom. The inside looks fine. When I flipped it, there is a very slight chip and sliver of a crack on the bottom. I feel ignorant in knowing what is significant to worry about. It does not go thru the sink. I will have to contact vendor tomorrow if truly a problem. What do you think?

Marissa - I'd call and talk to someone at Blanco. We had a very small area along the one corner that we weren't sure about and they asked us to email them a picture. We sent it to them and they were able to assure us that what we saw was absolutely no problem at all...but our issue was much different in nature from what you are showing, so I'd definitely get in touch with Blanco.

Xenozoon, Caricas (or Vasconcellas, as some designate highland papayas) are generally prone to root-rot in California. Just because your plant died below the soil doesn't necessarily mean that that soil is contaminated with some deadly pathogen. (Although I am surprised to hear that this happened in San Diego, of all places. Perhaps the severe January freeze stressed your plant badly.) If you want to re-plant rooted cuttings in that same container, yes, it probably would be best to put in some new soil mix, just in case. However, I don't think that you should haul the original contents off to a landfill ... you might just spread the stuff around your yard, possibly around plants that will never be in danger of having their roots rot in the winter. (Say, under an apple tree or something like that.) By the way, it seems to me that you would be far better-off growing *real* papayas in your containers. You live in just about the best region in the state for this, and they should be possible for you to grow and fruit -- perhaps with a little effort. (And although babaco plants *look* very much like papayas, the fruits are not even remotely comparable.) But for all I know you already have large tropical papaya plantings. Or perhaps you're just a big babaco fan!

I am with oldryder, My biggest challenges are coming with changing weather/seasonal patterns. growing season is longer here as well, but that "early" spring just seems to wake stuff up too soon. Our frosts are not much later but the plants are all more advanced when they come....the long mild falls could become useful for late ripening varieties and second garden plantings...but I sure do miss the snow, and I thought I left ticks behind when I came north. I have not noticed a large change in pest/disease pressure yet, but I do believe it is coming. FB at least is seen now and then and used to be almost unheard of.

I also wonder whether they are moist enough too? 34C is rather warm especially with such an airy mix with the 50% perlite in it plus not having an airtight lid would also let any moisture you have given them escape. Is the mix evenly moist?...it needs to be wetted thoroughly but not sopping wet. If you cut an individual cling film cover for each pot attached with an elastic band this may help keep the moisture in better. When they do sprout I would be careful they don't get too drawn as the soil is far down the cups....I would cut each cup down so the soil is 1/2 inch below the tops. If they don't show in a few more days, I would be tempted to fish them out and see if they are still viable by very gently squeezing them, re-pot them if OK, maybe in a mix with less perlite and try again. Seed/seedlings do not need such a fast draining mix as older DR's. as they need the moisture around them, they can't dry out in the early stages. Hope this helps, good luck and keep us posted. Okay, off topic, Sally, please, please do a new post, for your reveal. I do enjoy all the white kitchens but for many reasons did not do one myself; we non-Somethin's Gotta Give remodelers need more inspiration photos! Was that Costa by the way? It's gorgeous! On topic: When one measurement changed, I did not think through how that impacted the rest of the plan. Despite research on the web and the store, when I received my microwave trim kit, the cabinet needed to get deeper than planned. I figured out pretty last minute that we now had a tiny unacceptable walkway and we moved the fridge over. We were so busy congratulating ourselves on our narrow escape, but the ride wasn't over. I didn't think about the 3 upper spacious cupboards that would now be microscopic when installed. The cabinet maker cut me a pretty good deal to redo that set with fewer but bigger doors. He definitely went above and beyond, and given what everyone else has posted about contractors, I am so very grateful that it got corrected as it did. Another one I did not think about soon enough was making a Ceiling and Texturing Plan. This is not the same as a Lighting plan, although lighting obviously figures into the equation. We did parts (not all) of this project DIY. We hadn't realized some areas that we needed to mud better because they would not be covered by tile or cabinet (ie above the window) and he had to add some hot mud last minute. Given the contractor we got (a personal rec), that was only a small upcharge. Also, be aware that once your texturing is underway, the room is sealed off. You can't supervise unless you are sealed in too. I would send in a big map or go over it with blue tape that you remind him to pull off before he starts that area. Like another poster, I also did not figure out that I wanted my ceiling light hung from a different position. I will not retexture, my husband is adamant that I find a table fixture that can be hung to correct position by a chain and a hook. It is what it is. The height and exact placement of the hood was not ideal. I was adamant that it be within the manufacturer's specs so that it worked properly. However, there were several inches of leeway within those guidelines. Have everyone pretend to be cooking and see what they think. It should have been higher to avoid my husband bumping his head. He is learning. But that was definitely a mistake.

Actually, now I am wondering about the topside of the sink. There is a curved cut out that is smooth and I did not think anything of it at first, but when I look at the Blanco site, none of the pictures show that so will contact Blanco and send pictures.

marissa- that curved area at the top of the sink doesn't seem right according to the pictures that I've seen of that sink. I'd take another picture of that from more of an overhead angle so that you can see the extent of the "indent" a bit better. I'd send that to Blanco ASAP as well as the previous one that you posted showing the underside.

I have sent pictures to Blanco and waiting to hear back. The curved part is curious to me since it is smooth and no broken piece in box. My contractor came by and was not concerned about bottom of sink, and thinks the curve is an intentional arc probably to allow room for faucet. Will see what Blanco says. Heaven knows I don't relish repackaging...

I don't recall my Silgranite sink having that curve in the back edge. So I dug through some of my progress photos, and sure enough I found a couple pics of the sink before I installed it, and no indent like yours. Now that does not mean yours is defective, perhaps they've modified it? My sink was installed not quite a year ago...
BTW you are going to love that sink! My sink is one of the top five best improvements of my kitchen re-do :)

Thank you ctycdm. I am excited about the sink. Have not heard back from Blanco yet but wondering myself if it is a modification to help center the faucet. Strange though. Hope to hear back tomorrow. Contractor not worried. Guess that is my job...

Here it is; good and bad news... The good news is that the arc cut out at back of sink is indeed new for the faucet. Bad news is that Blanco feels those are popped air bubbles on the bottom and can't know how deep the defect is so need to return. Repackaging will be a challenge! But goes to show never make assumptions. Will see how Home Perfect is to return.

Figured the back did not look good. It is so fortunate that you know to inspect these things yourself! Otherwise, it would likely have been installed.
