My babaco is dead. Do I have to worry about soil contamination?

I have had a babaco growing and fruiting happily in a half-barrel in my yard for about 3 years. This year, it was looking good, the leaves were coming back after winter dormancy, and I was looking forward to more fruit. Then the plant simply fell over, and when I looked at the base of the trunk, it and the roots below it were positively mushy, dead and rotten. I cut off the trunk, above any trace of rot, cut it into 4 pieces about a foot long each, dusted them with fungicide/rooting hormone and put them in dry sand and vermiculite to callus for a couple of days.

Now I have to deal with the remains. I put the rotted roots in the garbage, rather than the compost, because I didn't want to contaminate the compost with whatever caused the root rot. Am I just being paranoid, or justifiably cautious? Can I ever use the soil that remains in the half-barrel, or do I have to chuck it?
