Comments (6)Working with Scherr's was very easy and pleasant - it's a family-owned business with really nice folks. The only slightly tricky thing was figuring out how much (and what size) trim I needed to order, but I'm happy to walk you through that if you decide to go the Scherr's route. First I designed my kitchen using the Ikea kitchen planner, which can be buggy and frustrating but it's worth it because after you've chosen your cabinets, it automatically generates a shopping list for you that you can adjust (ie if you're using Scherr's, you delete the doors and trim). Then at Ikea, they pull up your saved planner design and use it to pull all the parts for you. From my Ikea store, home delivery for up to a full truckload of stuff was $60 and it could be delivered as quickly as the same day. For Scherr's I sent the planner-generated list of the cabinets and they sent me the list of pieces they would make with prices. They were very patient working up multiple estimates for me as my design evolved. I was extremely detail oriented about the ordering and went through everything with a fine-toothed comb and didn't find any errors in the Scherr's list and everything was delivered perfectly. For the Ikea delivery, it came off the truck so fast and there were so many pieces, I couldn't keep up and just made sure the big things like the dishwasher and sink were included. As it turns out, of the 60 or so pieces, they only forgot one small thing and when I went back to the store, they just gave it to me no questions asked. And finally regarding painting, from what I understand you can have an auto body shop spray your doors with the same kind of paint you would get from Scherr's. You might want to search the Ikeafans site, because I'm pretty sure I've seen discussions about it there. Hope that helps!...See MoreBefore & After - Pictures of My Tiny Galley Kitchen
Comments (37)Thanks for all the kind words! GW was a great resource all the way through the planning and then the "doing"! Just a couple examples - until I posted a question about which mullions I should choose for glass front cabinets, it never had occurred to me that I had far more choices than plain glass. Now every time I open my cabinets, I smile - I do love the river ice! And because I had always had them, I started my plan with lower cabinets but thanks to GW I changed to all drawers. I love having all my pots, pans, mixing bowls, and small appliances in deep drawers. No more pulling everything out to get the one thing in the back. When we were house hunting, I dreamed of a huge eat-in kitchen with an antique butcher block, but I'm really enjoying cooking in this cozy space with everything so close at hand. mabeldingeldine: We're not Mainers, we just wish we were! We take a trip to the mid-coast area every summer. We got married there and got the Common Ground poster that year - it was also the perfect addition to my kitchen chicken collection! t-bird: Getting the Scherr's doors didn't save any money but I was able to get exactly what I wanted - I just didn't love the finish/materials on any of the white Ikea doors. I posted a breakdown of my costs on the "Under $20k Kitchens thread". I've still got some little paint touch-ups to do, and I need to put some trim where the backsplash ends but it's so nice to have a kitchen that really works. Comments (14)I'm just at $20K. All my cabinet refacing work (new doors, painting-rehabbing insides and frames of cabinet boxes, custom side panels, custom island and hood, pull outs for existing boxes and 3 new cabinet boxes) was $7400. I don't know if I could have purchased IKEA cabinets and had them installed for a similar price, but I actually like the less-shiny new look of the painted white cabinets versus the shiny new Adel cabinets that I was considering. We had an 18 mo old white Bosch DW which we kept and bought a Frigidaire wall oven, micro and warming drawer. Nothing high-end. Our appliance splurge was the Samsung CD FD fridge. Purchasing from a local appliance mom & pop type dealer resulted in lower prices than big box stores. I saved money by not replacing the decrepit old window over the sink, buying Lowe's basic white subway tile instead of the handmade Cobsa tile I loved. My tile backsplash, labor and materials, was under $500. We saved 10% by using a warehouse source for hardwood floors thru my floor installer. I also chose extremely inexpensive HD knobs (instead of the $10 glass knobs I really wanted) and splurged on the more expensive RH pulls just for the drawers. Lastly, I used Costco's painting company, Certa Pro, for the walls, ceiling and trim - they were itching for business and gave me a great deal with fantastic service. Comments (24)Love what you have done. You've had a big change in your life and I am loving how you are diving right in there and having fun with it. I love your new kitchen, it looks absolutely lovely. Your granite is a bit similar to mine but mine is a little more ivory. It reminds me of Juperana Tier, also. I love it. Looks great with all your other choices. Love you little doggie too. So sweet! Good match : )...See Moremrsartsncrafts
