igloochic - ? about son's bathroom toe kick step

Can you share a photo and information on how the toe kick step for your son's bathroom was constructed?

I want to do the same for my kitchen island where I will be baking - I am going to have it at normal counter height. Since I am vertically challenged, I would like to create a step so I can roll dough. My DH isn't vertically challenged, and since I want to encourage and reinforce his prep work in the kitchen, I don't want to make the counters too short for him!

And if it's not too hard to do this, I am going to have my DH try to retrofit the cabinet in the kid/guest bath since my DD is a wee little thing and I am tired of tripping over the #!*%& step stool....

Hopefully igloochic will see this, but I remembered her response on the bathroom forum and thought I would post it for you.

We did a similar step in our bathroom, but it is in the bottom drawer of the vanity rather than toekick.

Mine is not quite finished (one of those things the new carpenter is going to finish in the next couple of weeks) but, unlike budge's mine slides on the floor (because of that cute foot on budge's she does not really have toe kicks). Our drawer in it now is the final drawer which came from the factory. The temporary drawer is what needs to be made...it will be the same size, and the toe trim on front goes on the face of it, but it will be heavy plywood so that it can hold weight, flipped upside down and then put on the normal hinges (which hold 100lbs). But now that I've seen budge's...I may have him make me the tray top instead, which I love because we'll lose the drawer function as long as he needs the stool.

Ok that was such a bad explaination that I'll take pictures tonight for you. The hefty construction of the drawer box is one issue, but you're going to have to research the glides a bit. Even though ours slides out on the floor, the glides are basically what hold it to the box to work. Basic blume full extention, but I believe the weight limit is 100lbs. Even if you're a scrawney thing...I'd want a pull out stool in an adult area to hold at least 200lbs because you never know who's going to pull it out and step on it.

Budge's is fabulous :o) mine's only adding about 4" for the little guy...but it's better than none I guess! I'll photograph the basic set up tonight after the blinds people leave (I'm finally getting shades, and they are also busy hanging my art at the same time LOL)

Thank you for the EXACT details of how to order that exact configuration of drawers as a sink base. When I went to IKEA they showed me how to use their computer program (which I've played with at home, it's really fun)but no one said there were any options for cabinets other than those on display. I'm so ridiculously psyched about this! I can't wait to show my husband. Our bathroom reno was originally supposed to be major but once the quotes came in it got progressively tinier and we are now leaving the existing tile (but getting it professionally cleaned and regrouted), leaving the existing floor plan (but putting in a new bigger window to let more light and air in). Instead of a stone or quartz countertop we're using laminate or butcher block. Instead of custom cabs it's IKEA. Believe it or not, I think I'm gonna be just as happy with this more minor reno. Sometimes the problem with spending a ton of money on something is that it's a let down when you are not delighted with every single thing. Your bathroom just came out so beautifully! If ours looks half as good I'll be happy.

I'm with Palimpsest about the trim and the doors - same color as the walls. It's a very sleek, sophisticated look in the same vein as your wonderful materials, and will quiet the whole business down visually so that those materials will show to best advantage. I'd also use the same finish on everything, with a soft sheen - B Moore's Pearl finish comes to mind. Modern lower lustre finishes in high-quality paints stand up to bathrooms better than they used to. And I'd shade the paint a little deeper than the biscuit, but with the same tone, so it will stand up to your finishes and offer a little contrast to the pale biscuit. Not so deep as Powell Buff, but perhaps something like Sherwin Williams's Antique White SW 6119 or Navajo White SW 6126, or B Moore's Cameo White or Bone White?

It sure helps to vent, and what better place than here? You are trying so hard to be everything for everybody else that you've forgotten to look after yourself. Learn to say No now and then, and mean it. You might be a super woman, but Superwoman you aren't. So stop trying. Can you get occasional respite care for your mother? Try having a chat with the doctor, and the social worker at the hospital, or a local church or charity organisation. One day a week to yourself will be very rejuvenating for you. Pass the buck onto SIL if necessary. I have a friend who takes things on like you seem to, and people walk all over her with hobnailed boots. Now and then she remembers some good advice I gave her some time back - use the 'what if I were dead? ' tactic. In other words, if you got run over by a bus tomorrow, the world would still revolve, someone would step in to take over from you. They'd cope. So - sometimes, let 'em cope! Meantime, you need some free time, some space, and some freedom to live and breathe for yourself. You've earned that right.

But BF doesn't do that. He doesn't try to be hurtful for just for kicks. He doesn't yell or intend to hurt feelings. But he's not perfect and he said something insensitive that hurt A__'s feelings, even though BF didn't intend for it to. He was a dumb@55, and we've talked it, and he acknowledged that what he said upset A__, and is going to be more sensitive and not joke around about A__'s hygiene troubles in the future. If we want to talk about being deliberately hurtful, maybe we should talk about how you showed up at the end of the thread and (indirectly) told me to leave my BF because he said something insensitive. Was there a good reason behind that, or were you just in a bad mood and wanted to take it out on someone?

Thanks so much for the quick response budge 1 and igloochick!

I look forward to the photos - it will be easier to show the contractor what I want to do than attempt to explain it (I'm just not that technical when it comes to building things - I know what I want, just not necessarily what they are called or which "thingy" is needed to get the job done).

I will make sure they use a heavy-duty "whatever" when they make it so it can support at least 200lbs.
