Hafele pull-out for oil etc - do you like yours?

We have one of these designed into our cabinets at the moment, but have not signed off on the plans yet and I was starting to have cold feet - although we're eager to get bottles of oil and soy sauce, etc. off the counter, it seems to take up a lot of space, and I'm wondering if it's overkill. A bottle of olive oil, a bottle of tamari, maybe a bottle or two of wine - some wine vinegar - but the Hafele rack is much bigger than that. Still, so convenient and neat!

We're going to put it right next to the stove, under the spice drawer, but I'm thinking maybe a bank of drawers would be more useful. Am also concerned bout if the oil etc. gets too warm next to the stove like that.

I'd love to hear from you if you have one, and find it useful or if you wish you had used the space otherwise. Thanks!

Takes up a lot of room???? Why? I don't have the Hafele units, but rather
. It is very compact, very tidy and I like it very much indeed. I have my cooking oil and vinegars and molasses etc. in these cubbies - very convenient, very nice and secure. I too have this under a spice drawer - also in the same stack.

What size is it? Are the shelves adjustable?

Don't worry about the stove, stoves & ovens are very well insulated and if the heat doesn't hurt your spices it won't hurt your oils.

We have two 6" pullouts flanking our cooktop. The left side holds my sprinkles, coloring, etc. for baking; the right side holds salt, shortening, spices, etc. for both baking & prepping. My only complaint is that the shelves are not adjustable so we actually cannot put our oils in the pullout (I was very unhappy to discover that after they were installed when I had shown my KD what I wanted...w/adjustable shelves!) Other than that, we really like our pullout.

Side note: someone once told me oils should be refrigerated, not stored in cabinets/pantries. Ditto for nuts & peanut butter. I don't know if this is true, but it might be something to research/think about.

your talking about push mower right?? I guess I am oil changing nerd so I go the extra mile. I run it out of gas before I change the oil (now I have little gas in it to spill out the cap vent or leak down into the combustion chamber.) now I can flip it over or stand it on it side to scrap the deck (if I can't scrap it off I use degreaser and pressure wash it). I remove the drain plug but that just me cause I don't like the oil dribbling over the side of the engine. While I have it flipped I flush the gas tank out with carb. cleaner (this IMO flushes out any find dirt, grass clipping, or water which left in over time will rust the bottom of the gas tank). Now that I got the deck scraped, air filter cleaned, gas tank cleaned, and the oil drained out Ready to service start up. I sometimes use engine degreaser to finish the job make the mower look like new again. I also wire brush and treat any rust spots. Course the top of the deck looks like new cause I didn't alow any grease and dirt build up over the years.

I spent HOURS looking online. And I had my sister's to look at and go by IRL. I loved her handles. And I learned from her about the needed projection and length (5") of handle for ease of fingers, no fussy trim/design (less to accumulate grime and gunk = easier cleaning), no sharp edges/ends (to catch a shirt on or hurt myself) etc. I found numerous handles that fit into the needed requirements - the final one was price. I had to rule out a lot that i liked because of too little projection or too much detail or too expensive. I found something simple with a curve that I liked with rounded ends, about a 1.25" projection and within price range for me. AND they're available in nickel or ORB - which ever of those I decide on. That will depend on what color my cabinets end up. Then I found them at HD (or L's) in nickel and bought one to put on a cabinet and try it for a time. So far I still love it.

We keep ours in a 12" wide two level pull out cabinet next to the rangetop. The most used bottles (e.g. olive oil) are at the very front so when I need to grab them, I open the door and grab them without pulling out the shelf. The taller bottles are on the bottom shelf so we don't have to bend much to reach them. The lower sides of a pull out make it easy to see enough of the bottle and label to easily identify the bottle I want. With a 24" wide drawer, it probably won't be filled with tall bottles, but will be a mix of short and tall ones. So one will have to bend more to get the short bottles. Also, it may be harder to tell which bottle is which in a deep drawer - that of course depends on how distinctive the bottles are when viewed from above and if you remember which is which. There are also pullouts available where the shelves attach to a door and pull out with them, but for us, I feel it is easier to not have to reach under the upper shelf to reach things on the bottom shelf or bend to see the things on the bottom shelf. We have a rangetop. Heat isn't great for oils and other flavoring agents so this may be better for a rangetop or cooktop than next to the oven of a range.

Here's the link to Arlosmom's BC solution as well as some other really interesting ones. The last couple of posts have links to her photos : she's also very kindly provided dimensions of the drawers in the last post. BC solutions Here's a roughup of what I plan to do. The drawers on the right side, will be full length with the "face" towards you when you pull them out. 3 sides will be about 4 inches high while the "face" side will be very low - maybe even with no side to facilitate easy pulling out of items. The cabinet can be wheeled out to access items which are in long term storage. It will have a door which has a toe kick piece to conceal the wheels. Good questions! It looks like it's adjustable, but I'll need to check. It's definitely tall enough for oil bottles, buehl - that's one of the reasons I'm interested in it. It's 20" tall. Mindstorm, I like the look of yours but wonder if it's tall enough for oil. It doesn't look like it to me but I could be wrong...I also like the narrowness of the one I'm looking at - it's only 6" wide.

Buehl, you make a good point about refrigeration. Truth is, most of my oils are in the fridge, and my nuts and pt butter - I heard that olive oil is okay at room temp so have always stored it that way, but investigating that is probably not a bad idea...since that's mostly what i use for cooking...i would also use the pull out it for flavored vinegars, cooking wines and sherries, , soy sauce, etc...which don't need refrigeration and which are currently in a mess on the counter, or in the cabinet.

mindstorm - Those are cool. Are they the ones from IKEA?

RE: Oils and nuts - They will become rancid eventually if left out. Sunlight will accelerate this process. I don't like leaving any oil out at room temp for more than 4-6 months. I always smell them before using - rancid oil can really ruin any dish. Boutique nut oils like walnut, hazelnut, pumpkin seed and macadamia spoil more quickly so I always refrigerate them. Olive oil can become solid in the fridge making it hard to pour; I occasionally refrigerate larger amounts, but always have a smaller amount that stays out and is on hand for cooking.

Maybe when I get that bigger fridge I'm dreaming of I'll have enough space to refrigerate my canola oil too (I use a lot more olive oil than I do canola) - for now I just buy the smaller more expensive containers because I usually end up throwing away half or more of the larger ones.

Any nuts I'm not planning on using within a month I put in the freezer - That's where we always kept them in the nice restaurants I worked in.

I purchase 90% of my oils in cans. Photo degradation is reduces. I don't keep my nut oils in the fridge but I use them pretty quickly.

Which hafele pull out are you referring too? I played around with one that was a wire rack and I did not like it because items that were not the full width rocked when pulled out. I guess if it was a flat pullout it would work better.
