I see a nice custom dog bed and a cute and furry pup! My chocolate lab would die for a cozy corner like that!

I can think of lots of reasons to keep it open and I do have a dog. Just wondered if others see something I can't.

Part of the reason for a low number of responses could be that it posted on Saturday -- I don't think weekend posts ever get as many responses as weekday.... and it could also be that it has people stumped. I've looked at it for a couple minutes and the only thing I have are questions, no ideas.

So here are my questions:

- do you have another office space? Is keeping it useful as an office space something attractive to you or any homework do-ers in your house? Because if your answer to that question was "yes", then I'd suggest moving one of the drawer bases on the right to the left so that you have enough space to put an office chair on one side or the other. Even though you don't need a workstation spot anymore, it's nice to have a place to work remotely, or pay bills, or have a child sit in your eyesight and do their homework.

-- if you don't want it as an office space, I'd probably try to get cabinets that match the original ones and put more drawers or storage space in there. My dog would love an under-cabinet space, but I'm not quite that generous -- not when I can have more storage. If your cabinets are no longer available, it seems you could do a custom piece and paint it an accent color --- or maybe repaint the whole lower cabs if need be-- lots of two-tone beautiful inspiration kitchens around here.

I'm stumped. I suppose you could have some open shelving built and store your nice serving bowls and platters.

Maybe an adjustable stool, that you could pull out and use to do tasks while seated; pull-out shelves or recycling...

Do you do any gift wrapping? Could it be used for that? Its a difficult spot, but also maybe it would be helpful to see the general layout of the kitchen.

Depending on the dimensions, perhaps you could put two under counter fridges in there for beverages, wine, snacks, or the like.

Are there any rolling bin units from Containers stores that would work there? Perhaps by Elfa?

Do you use kitchen stools for prep? Can they garage there?

Since you have a dog and like the idea of a space for a dog bed, I'd suggest one shelf under the counter, leaving the floor free. If you don't want a dog bed there, I think it would look good to do two shelves, matching up with the line of the neighboring drawer and the bottom of the cabinet, and do a toe kick that flows with the rest of the cabinets. I have found open corner shelves to be some of the best storage I've ever used because they hold so much. You could do some beautiful baskets on them.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried the dog bed underneath, the dog has his spot on top of the sofa and he's not budging.
I don't need an office or desk. There is a large built in desk upstairs with cabinets. I really don't need any more storage. I like keeping a step ladder there and I guess it's always nice to have some open real estate to use as needed.
I'm intrigued by the open corner shelves--do you have any pictures?
Kris ma I don't know if the cabinets are still available --they were custom made by a local man through a GC. I would think any cabinet maker could match the style though.
I don't really mind keeping it 'open' as it's somewhat useful but if something really creative could be done it would be great.
I looked at the ELFA line --they are only 20" deep, the cabinets are 24"

When I looked at your space, I also saw this immediately as a great gift wrapping / craft station. Do you have children? How about retrofitting some of the base cabs for hanging files? Rev a shelf has some options. Look in your basement (or other storage area). Are there some things you could take out of storage that could be placed in the cabinets? Extra serving platters / bowls etc? If it is adjacent to your kitchen, what about making some of the uppers glass and placing some fancy rarely used stemware in there? Just a few ideas...
