What did you HAVE to have and could now live without?
Comments (37)xc60 posted: "Interior lighting and clear glass doors on the uppers of my double stacked cabinets. I wanted to display pretty things up there and light the cabinets up, but could never get the glass to look streak free. So I never turned on the lights or put anything up there. It was also expensive as the cabinet interior boxes had to be stained to match the exteriors. New house will also have double stacked cabinets, but solid fronts and no glass or lighting." This makes me feel better about our choice. Oh how I loved that look but my GC appealed to my practical side and disuaded me and I'm glad. He pointed out, not only do they have to look tidy, but only the first few inches of depth is viewable so you either lose the back half by leaving it empty or fill it up, negating the pretty display purpose. Onto the question - I never remember to turn on my UCL. It's almost too much light and I'm not doing that much detail work to need that much light. We put very little specialized cabinetry and that has been ok for us. I sometimes see things on here that I wish I had but only when I see them, not when I'm in my kitchen working, lol. I do wish our spices were better organized. That is probably my only beef with our new kitchen. Still looking for the perfect system to organize in our upper cabs. We like them where they are vs in a drawer, but we haven't found a way to organize them neatly....See MoreWhat do you have at the end of your peninsula? Except a trashcan
Comments (11)One of our peninsulas is b/w the DR & Kitchen w/the refrigerator opening into the passageway. The last cabinet on that peninsula is a 4-drawer stack containing, top-to-bottom: * Flatware * Plastic wraps & bags * Extension cords * Bread. The flatware is used most in the DR and at the peninsula, the leftovers are handled either on the peninsula or to the right of the refrigerator, and lunches are made there as well. The end of the peninsula has a decorative door. (No decorative doors on the back of the peninsula b/c people sit there and (1) stools hide anything you have there, (2) I didn't want to reduce the overhang clear space at all, and (3) it saved $$$ (my DH really liked that one!) The peninsula on the other end is b/w the kitchen & small hall to FR with the ovens across from it and the cooktop in the base of the "U" close by. The last cabinet is a 3-drawer stack with, top-to-bottom: * Potholders * Cookie Cutters, Rolling Pin, etc. (all baking tools) * Miscellaneous (candles, ice trays, popsicle molds, etc.) That area is my Baking Center and that drawer stack is b/w the ovens & cooktop. The end of this peninsula also has a decorative door. (The back of this peninsula is also a functioning cabinet next to the wall + decorative door panels.) Comments (1)I'm bumping for you because I'm not positive on the answer, but my instinct is to put them in the middle of the counter, and then use the fridge cabinet wall as the "wall" on the right and the end of the counter on the left as the "wall" on the left to space them out evenly. Depending on the pendants you purchase, also think about cleaning them. We have clear pendants so they have to be polished more often than some others and I'm glad they are (fairly) easy to reach without getting a ladder out....See More5 ft peninsula - 1 pendant or 2?
Comments (27)Florantha- They are the same pendants Candice Olson used in her coffee klatch kitchen shown here in photo 4 of 6... the website really does not do them justice: http://www.elledecor.com/image/tid/3677?page=3&pause=1 Brickton - :( yikes I am glad you pointed that out before I spent a lot of time and money trying to get those pendants here from Canada. rcmb- So I was just about to have a no pretty pendant for me pity party..but those pendants you found are beautiful!! :) Very simple and color-free but with a wee bit of bling. My taste is very simple but I like a touch of something, something. And those pendants do have it. I am just wondering if they will be too dressy. What would I use for a light over my non-existant dining room table? Hmmm.. but I bet I could switch to my more fancy table choice: http://www.westelm.com/products/spencer-dining-table-g444/?pkey=cdining-tables Love it but am unsure to add more black (already have that from soapstone). I do not want the space to feel too cold and formal for such a casual home. I was originally thinking of warming up the space with a jute rug under the table and grass/woven roman shades. I am not a decorator (obviously) but it sounds like coastal meets Tiffany? Does that work?...See Moreyoung-gardener
