Screwdriver test total fail. Where to start?
Comments (21)Yes, if you have true compaction, shampoo will not work any better than water. If you had that I'd go as far as to suggest rototilling (I know...I said it. Mark this day on your calendar). The problem with true compaction is all the air has been driven out of the soil by mechanical action when the soil was saturated. When it dries all the particles are locked together. You have to get them separated and then let a new soil structure form. Tillers are good for that. Of course in the future you would have to come back and relevel the lawn. Sandy soil does not need shampoo. Usually it does not need it to begin with because people with sandy soil never complain about it being "compacted." Compost has its place, but not for grading. Being organic compost will soon completely "evaporate" as it decomposes. If you need to level or regrade, use sand or topsoil. And please do not reseed or overseed bermuda into a hybrid bermuda lawn. If you are sure you have a common bermuda lawn, then okay, but hybrid bermuda is a different plant from the seeded varieties....See MoreYeast (IDY) failed proof test?
Comments (19)I did go to SLT in El Segundo today and bought more yeast, proceeded to proof it, to make sure it was good. I had already thrown out the yeast in the jar that I had used before, but when I tested that yeast, I used 1/2 cup of water, 1 tsp sugar, and only 1/2 tsp yeast. It only made a couple of bubbles on the top after several hours, and I had thought that this was enough to consider it bad. Next I opened the new yeast and tested it according to GL's instructions, using 1/4 cup tepid (101 degree) water, 1 tsp sugar, and 1-1/2 tsp yeast. Bubbles quickly reached the 3/4 cup mark. Since I had not tested the old yeast with this formula, I got a jar from the freezer that had the other half pound of yeast that I had bought two weeks before, and I tested it the new way. It quickly reached the 1 cup mark - see photo below, and so I guess that jar is okay. Why would one jar be bad and the other one not? I checked the jar whose contents I had discarded, and I noticed that it had a faint coffee odor, as Kevin had stored coffee in it before, and I had only wiped it out and used the same lid. The other jar in the freezer was clean and with a new lid, and the yeast was fine, and so I am wondering if the tiny residue of coffee could have killed half a pound of yeast. So I ended up with proofed yeast and didn't want to throw it away and ended up making a batch of bread dough, as I had watched Jacques Pepin make breads this morning and thought I might try his technique. He let his dough rise for an hour and a half, gently deflated it, and then let it rise again overnight in the fridge. I though that this sounded like a good idea, and I wanted to try kneading dough by hand on my new countertop, since it is quartz and food-grade - plus I had just washed it for the photos. First I made the dough in a bowl using a long silicon spoon and then turned it out onto the counter to knead. It was so much easier to knead on my new counter that I was completely amazed. I had intended to make puff pastry on this counter (when it gets cool, which it hasn't yet), and in the past, I had always kneaded dough on a large board that would always slide around. What a different the new counter makes! I may go back to making bread by hand now, although I might still use the bread machine in hot weather - at least until we get central A/C. The mystery continues... Lars Here is a link that might be useful: Will coffee kill bread yeast...See MoreGranite radon test in kitchen.
Comments (93)Ok: I am going to just say this: and ask: which Country are we talking about? Brazil? Most people know nothing about granite: as once 18 months ago: I knew ZERO. I have educated myself and am a sales assistant for granite countertops for 17mnths. What are the testings on stone from Norway, Finland, Ukraine, India, Persia, Italy, and Africa or China? (marble and/or granite) Although not all granite we call granite is a true granite: it's based on what the material is made up of. (getting technical here) I swear: this has turned into a BIG consumer scare! "A child died from eatting paint chippings on her porch from old wood paint with high levels of radon: they though she was being poisoned on purpose/murdered. No just eatting paint chips! high high high levels." sad story, saw on trutv. but do you get what I mean? I know that people won't buy granite in part now due to the news! I always air out my apartment Daily! Cold or Hot out. I have Juparana Bordeaux big coffee table: Love it! McDonalds cheese burgars fries milk shake that has no milk!, smoking, drinking alcohol, eatting fast food: I should say every day, eatting processed foods, polution from the cars we drive daily, airplane polution: it's all bad for us! Plastic is bad! Bad for environment. We have a ton of toxins in our daily life. I am not saying "so what". I just believe the reports have hurt the granite business a little. Look at all the chemicals in processed foods! Do we even konw what they mean. I read labels now at the store: and I try to buy organic and shop at Sprouts grocery store: organic. But seriously: I use to live on Mcdonalds for years and 5 cans of DP soda daily! Then one day I said no more. If there is super high levels that will kill someone. Then yes, they should do something about those slabs at the factory. Or stop producing them if it will flat out kill someone! Don't eat the granite! We want beautiful granite in our daily life & homes, but we are cutting up mountains that were formed thousands of years ago. don't get me started. Radon levels could or could not shop up in the same lot: or from slab to slab. Seems like certain mountain will have more: due to the fact of the material the granite is made up of. (was posted on here) It's all a chemical reaction. I learned a month ago: how garnets are formed. It's all very interesting. Two of my customers are geolists and they taught me a few things about rock. Very interesting! I can look at granite and guess what country the slab come from! It's easy: Plus, climate is different from all over the world. The Niagara and Juparana has beautiful crystals: and the climate is much warmer in Brazil vs. Norway!...See MoreArc fault breaker fails to trip with test button - what now?
Comments (11)There is no connection between an AFCI (or a GFCI) and ground (green wire). It can't possibly have any bearing on the situation. As the flowchart above points out, what can keep it from tripping is the lack of the supply side NEUTRAL connection as this will keep the circuitry inside the AFCI from being powered (or the unit is defective)....See Morefunnysunny
