pros and cons of sink in corner
Comments (10)I did it and put a glass-fronted cabinet above it for displaying stuff so it didn't feel claustrophobic. It was perfectly nice, but at 5'1", I didn't use the space behind it either. I had a custom sink and it took advantage of the extra deep cabinet. (And then I had to go get a new faucet because I needed one that had an extra extra extra long spout because I ended up getting a sore back reaching far to get to the water. Still worth it.) There was about a 24" drawer bank between the DW and sink and it worked well. It was dish drawers which made it less of a squeeze than a full door DW would. Just do a mockup before you decide on positioning and be sure to have the open DW door included. It also left my window (where the sink had previously been) over open counter, and I really liked having a bit of counter with nothing over it. Didn't worry about coffee maker steam hitting cabinets, or climbing over the sink to open the window...it was just nicer to work without a cabinet in my face, and I guess most of my kitchen work isn't actually AT the sink....See Morekitchen sink - pros and cons of having drain in back
Comments (6)thanks for all the input! Sounds like it definitely makes sense to go with an offset (thanks for clueing me in on the terminology, askchicago :) drain. Does anyone have a suggestion for a reasonably priced 30" (approx) stainless undermount sink with an offset drain? I was hoping that Ticor had one, but wasn't able to find one. I saw this no-name one on Overstock.com ($153) http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Elongated-Stainless-Steel-Undermount-Kitchen-Sink/2332835/product.html or a Kraus ($370) http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Kraus-30-inch-Undermount-Single-Bowl-Stainless-Steel-Kitchen-Sink/3381330/product.html...See MorePros and cons of a shallower sink?
Comments (9)I'm short, and I hate a deep sink. We have one in the break room at work, and I hate washing even a few lunch dishes in it. I have to reach so far "in" that I end up splashing water on my middle as I reach over. I've measured my builder-basic sink at home, and it's about 8 1/2 -- no problem. I'm okay with 9", but I don't want any deeper. Consider, too, whether you're doing an undermount or top mount sink. This could make a 2-3" difference in the location of your sink's bottom....See Moreanyone have Carrara Marble in their Kitchen? If so pro's/ cons.
Comments (24)I commented earlier, and I have both carrara and soapstone. I love both of them. In your situation with RA and the need to periodically stop to put hot things down on the counters, I'd go with the soapstone. I do this all of the time, and it is not at all affected by the heat. Soapstone is very definitely the opposite look of the carrara because it is dark. But it is a natural stone that has a lovely silky feeling to it and is zero maintenance. Contrary to what is mentioned above, it will darken even if it is not oiled. If you can re-vision in your mind what you can see in your kitchen I think soapstone may be a no-brainer for you in your situation where function absolutely has to take precedence over form....See MoreAnn Scheley
