help... can't get large base corner unit down to basement

Hi there... my dh just called to say the two large base counter units (with super susans) won't fit in the back door and down the stairs to the basement...

So, here's my question. Is there an easy way to take them apart (then reassemble in the basement?) These are kraftmaid cabinets that we purchased at the kraftmaid outlet, so its not like we paid an arm & leg for them... i'm willing to take the chance of deconstructing them if i need to.

Someone told me once that some of those corner units have removable toekicks for that reason. But I'm not sure.

They're not really made to be taken apart, glue, pins etc. But do you have a window that can be removed they could go through? That's how we got out couch in our lower level. The entire window and frame had to come out and then go back in, which cost about 300 bucks.

Hi. I have the Lee Valley blind corner unit, and we love it. It was a bit pricey, but we have never regretted it. It has never had a mechanical problem, like someone else here was complaining about. Here are reasons I think you should get a blind corner unit for your space, MadamG2U: For certain spaces, it's the only way to make the most use of that area. (Like the photos for theanimala above, and your design drawings, sometimes a Lazy Susan is not suitable for the space). Sure, you could do drawers, but you're still wasting space. If you are limited in storage and space, like you seem to be, this seems like a huge reason to use a blind corner unit. While it may be somewhat expensive, so are drawers or anything else, AND I think it's such a cool feature, that when you go to sell your home, believe me, it will look like a clever thing to a potential buyer. To me it would be a sign that the seller thought carefully about the best use of space in a kitchen where space is at a premium. The units really are clever. If you organize well and stay somewhat neat, I don't believe you'll have a problem with stuff falling. I never have, and we have kids. They love this thing too. Would I rather have a bunch of drawers, or maybe even a cool Lazy Susan? Sure, but for my particular corner, and it looks like yours too, this was the best and just about only solution. Good luck.

With all of the built ins, this is actually a MUCH smaller room than it appears to be, and that you are trying to arrange furniture for. And that is why the furniture feels crowded. Crowded, not cozy. The desk and ladder visually blocking the door makes the space feel like there is no room to walk. That may not be correct based on your comments, but it is absolutely the first thing you notice and it sets a tone for the room. The hard lines of the large beautiful desk make the only spot really suited to it in front of the windows. It overwhelms the space if you want comfy seating too because it doesn't leave enough room left over for anything but a small loveseat or oversized chair where you have the desk currently. And the large sofa overwhelms the space if you want it as a more officey area. There isn't room for both functions because of the built ins. You've got to pick one large piece to embody the main purpose here. Either the large desk or a large sofa. Not both. Both don't work with the available floor space. Unless you switch to a small scale writing desk and a smaller scale sofa, and maybe not even then. No extra chair at all. It's already too densely populated. And I agree with the others that the ottoman is visually too bulky and casual for the room. If you choose comfy seating as the room's primary purpose, then I'd choose a sofa that had a matching ottoman to keep the visual clutter at a minimum. All of the different books when they go in will up the noise considerably and you want to try to minimize that effect.

For what it's worth, though, we splurged on the schmancy Hafele version---it works beautifully (we chose it over the Lee Valley after reading a lot of reports of the hardware being difficult to open/close over time on those, and our cabinetmaker said he had been called many times to fix the non-Hafele ones, though he didn't know who'd made the ones he'd worked on). BUT---the basic design is the same. Our cabinetmaker strongly advised us against having a drawer over ours because it would cut down clearance; I insisted on it anyway since I knew what I wanted to store there and for in our small kitchen the drawer was more important. We also have frameless cabinets, which helps considerably---you're losing at least 2-3" of clearance with framed cabinets here. Ours also does swivel close to 90 degrees, I think; I can't tell from the photo if it's actually different from yours or not in that regard. I think at the end of the day, all of the blind corner units work much better if they don't have drawers over them, and if the doors are as wide as possible (frameless or not). We didn't have a choice with our door size, but we ruled out the Hafele kidney bean shaped pullouts because the one that cleared our door size was tiny---it only took up a third of the space inside the cabinet! We didn't have the extra inch of door needed to jump to the next size. It's just tricky to find good ways to use this space, I think.

Thank you all so much for your kind words and hugs....what a caring group here. I ended up starting a whole new thread about the sink. It has been sort of messed up fron the start with the big box writing in the contract we would get a Blanco..then later realizing it was a "mmistake" and they don't even sell Blanco... We found out they are allowing us about $428 or something like that for our sink. If we use the fabricator's brand (Elcipse) in an 18 g...we aren't out any more money. We can upgrade to the 16 g 1 3/4 bowl for $69, or get the single bowl Artisan for $69, also a 16 g. The Artisan doesn't have a rear drain, but I'm to the point I can live with it anyhow. Since we just lost so much in the flood I need to cut back now. I'm telling myself we really have come a long way from our original kitchen...we have pretty new cabinets and our granite is coming. It could be a heck of a lot worse. Some of our neighbors have most of the contents of their homes on the front lawn in heaps. We've been declared a "disaster" zone. I'm going to get one of these sinks...by Wednesday. That's my goal! And a faucet. And 2 new cars. My mind is going 'round and 'round...sink, faucet, car, car. :) I'm a hospice nurse and on-call tonight, so I just may forget the whole thing tonight and "think about that tomorrow."

You need a 36" door (or window) to be able to get them where you need them to be. They can go over on their side and fit in vertically then. While you can probably disassemble them to get them through the door with a little damage, assembling again might be another matter.

You might be able to saw off the toe kick even if it is attached and then build a platform for the bases to sit on when you install. Once the toe is off the cabinet should be about 30" high. You might have to take the door off of its hinges too. Good luck.

thanks for the ideas... i'll go home and look at the toekick to see if there's anything we can do there...
The windows are all too small to fit anything through, so that won't work.

I'll let you guys know how its going :)

If it's still close you can also remove the door's molding for a little extra space. That's easy and cheap to do and retouching the paint takes only minutes.

Well, what finally happened? Is your cabinet sitting out in the snow or ??????? You know we worry about you when we don't hear back!

Yay.... the 2 corner units finally made it in the house and down to the basement. (they had been sitting outside, tarped, in this 15 degree weather... brrr) My guys cut the toe kick off and moved them down, but by the time i got home they were all reassembled and i couldn't really tell the difference (at least nothing that won't be covered by the molding :)
