Layout help please.. - Galley Kitchen for 2 - ideas encouraged

I am remodeling my kitchen and could use as much input as possible. Here are the details. It is a galley kitchen with 147" on either side plus a 3" reveal near the slider.

Enter the house and there is a small foyer of about 6 feet with a pocket door that leads right into the kitchen. Through the kitchen is the eating area which is not included in the 147".

There is a window on one side that I can remove or make smaller it is 33" off the pocket door and goes for 48". It is in a really bad spot. Not far enough to get 2 banks of nice sized drawers in either side but nice for added light. On the side opposite the window there is a full wall for 48" of the 147".
I am open to stacking uppers as the ceiling is very high.

Appliances are
36 in bottom KA or Miele type fridge
24" dw
30" stove tbd - could go with a 36 cooktop
24" Gaggenau steamer.
30" main sink - originally had a 33 sink base but need the extra counter area.. Would love to get a prep sink in somewhere on the fridge side as this is for 2 very active cooks who are cooking 2 separate meals and 2 labs that are always in the kitchen with us.
I am including a variety of pics and layouts. I hope this is helpful to start.

The floor plan I Ã¢ÂÂdesignedÃ¢ÂÂ can be changed as nothing has been ordered. We are both right handed if that makes a difference.

I am just finishing my very similar kitchen only each side of my galley is only about 9'. I have 4' between the two sides of my galley. My range side is laid out exactly has you have drawn yours. I like it.

My sink side does not have a steamer but I have a counter to ceiling cabinet in the location of your steamer. I used a 36" sink base, even in my small space, for a super single Silgranite sink and I am really glad I did. I would think about expanding your sink base. My dishwasher is to the right of the sink. I prefer it that way being right handed. I like to be able to open it with my right hand and load it with my right hand. I am a little confused about what you have drawn to the right of your 18" to the right of your sink base. I would flip my dishwasher over to that side and add the 36" sink base.

I am the queen of removing pocket doors. I removed two (one on each side of the kitchen) in the house I sold this fall and one in the current kitchen with a similar layout to yours. I am not sure I would remove one opening to the foyer but I do love the look of the open space. As I type I am looking from the living room into the kitchen through the area which used to have a pocket door closing down the view.

My original sink base was 33 and I thought that I needed the 3 inches for counter space as DH and I are always in the kitchen together which is also why I thought it would be good to put the dw on the side by the steamer so it was out of the way. The 18 next to the sink is for trash. I'm not sure what other cabinets or drawers I will use for the rest.

What about a second sink? I would like to put one in.. Is this area too small for one?

Hello all, This is my first time posting to the forum, so thanks in advance for any guidance you all have to offer!! I am moving forward with a full remodel of an original 1940's kitchen. The plan is to have all major work done by August 1st. Pro: I have a fantastic, solid contractor and also an experienced professional who can modify and install IKEA cabs. Con: I am on a tight budget: ~25K to cover all labor, materials, appliances, hence IKEA cabs. Or maybe maybe something from green demolitions? I have attached drawings by an architect friend. The wall separating kitchen and DR will be removed. Door between kitchen and LR will be walled closed to provide more functional wall space in kitchen. Structural problem: the window on the south side next to the back door is lower than counter-height. And the depth between the wall and the molding for the window is short. Appliances: Fridge will be Frigidaire all-refrigerator. Induction cooktop (GE? Bosch?) KitchenAid dishwasher Likely no oven (my toaster convection oven is plenty) Microwave of some inexpensive kind. Demolition starts late next week, and I am suddenly questioning the architect's design: The custom open shelving does not help with economizing. I'm not convinced there is enough storage space in her drawings. I love the open look created by eliminating all or most upper cabinets. I find the varied height of the upper cabinets to be too busy. It's a little difficult to read...how far into the breezeway are you envisioning the kitchen will extend? It might be helpful if you could repost w/the "new" dimensions highlighted so we know what space is available. Do you anticipate the kitchen becoming a 3 or 4 person kitchen in the future? It looks like your kitchen is only 10' wide...is this correct? It may be difficult to get an island in that narrow a kitchen. You need... Wall run of cabinets = 25.25" (24" cabinets + 1.25" counter overhang) Aisle b/w island and wall run = 42" Island w/15" overhang = 40.25" Total used so far = 107.5" Total Width Available = 120" Leaves just 12.5" behind the island for an aisle. And, with mudroom right there, most likely there will be a bit of traffic. Even if you reduced the aisle to 36" (not a good idea for a multi-cook kitchen), you would still have only 18.5" behind the island. You really need at least 36", preferably 48" for someone to walk behind someone sitting at the island. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you...but this is how I'm seeing it right now. Now, if you are taking a significant amount of room from the breezeway for the kitchen, perhaps the island could be rotated approx 90o and be placed in the "new" part of the kitchen. Without more information about what space you plan on using, I'm not sure how much we can help you. BTW...my kitchen was 11'1" wide and the consensus on the Forum was that it was too narrow for an island w/seating. I ended up going w/galley w/short (2' & 3') peninsula extensions on each end of one wall. It helps direct traffic away from the cooktop and prep area as our garage and foyer entrances are on the one end.

Thank you all for your very insightful comments. Davidro �� We are reframing the entire area, so the pantry framing is completely up to us. Our approved plans do show a pantry but my GC says that as long as I figure it out by next week when we do the framing, we have some flexibility. The vent pipes and the electrical is the same.. all will depend on what we end up doing. Only limitation on electrical is that there will be no cans. Our ceiling is low and has wood planks and beams that we plan to keep. We are adding 2 new skylights (see the X near the clean-up sink and the cooktops). I am thinking something similar to this GW classic Spanish kitchen with school house flush mounts, pendants over sink s and a modest pendant over the banquette area The question of Pantry --> I added the pantry to the plan to see if we can reduce the cost of cabinetry and add some long-term grocery/ appliance storage. The original idea was to basically make this back to back cabinets. The galley kitchen would then end in a "L" here with the short leg facing the kitchen and another set of cabinets facing the corridor (for other household storage). The side facing the kitchen could have the fridge and the ovens (an appliance wall?). We gave up on that as the pantry seemed more optimal but the discussion now about choppy counters makes me rethink that. I love Dean1's neo-angle pantry as well (in fact pinged him a couple of times to ask to see the inside). The only thing on the oven is that I do want it to be ergonomically a good height for me. I am 5' tall and wanted the 27" gagg convection mounted lower and the 24" gagg combi mounted above so that I can peek into the combi at the eye-level. So it would be a deepish drawer with the ovens above and some storage above. Pllog --> I completely agree on the prep sink position. I am not happy. I thought about moving it after the cooktop area across the fridge. That may work as the filtered water will be at the prep sink but was concerned about people dropping clean-up things in the prep sink. That would be a big ��ick�� factor for me. The nice thing about this sink is that it has a built in cutting board that sits flush with the counter.. so the extending the countertop idea works. I actually did this based on feedback from you and Davidro in the appliance forum thread a while ago. Bmorepanic �� Thank you so much for the reality check on the pantry. I need to mock up the pantry layout physically per your email and see how it works.. I realized I am more visual/ kinesthetic than verbal as part of my remodeling education �� Here are the full house layout (sorry for the small size fonts.. Only way I could make it fit ). As you can see, the house kind of wraps around the patio/courtyard behind the kitchen with doors from the kitchen, family room and the master. Picture of the current kitchen with the ceiling plants and beam standing from where the pantry is shown in the plan.(pardon the crappy cellphone photo. There adobe brick wall you see at the end near the french door will be modified to add a window with a seat for the banquette. All that brick you see currently jutting into the aisle is gone. I'm not sure about putting a range under the window. That seems like a recipe for goop and splatter on the window, and also seems likely that, assuming you live in an area with winters, your window is liable to crack/shatter with the temperature extremes of hot from the range vs cold outside. I had that happen in my house when I first moved in, actually, and it didn't even have a range under it, just a sink! So, I'd imagine it being a high risk event with a serious heat source under a window. I think it'd be a lot easier to figure out a good layout with the right side of the diagram filled in. Can you repost a diagram showing what is over there? That way, folks can see traffic flow and imagine any options for that end of the area.

Since you mentioned counter space is an issue and you want a prep sink here are my suggestions: I would close off the door to your entry way and move the stove to where the door was; this will give you more counter space and more cabinets, and you will have a work triangle where I think the 2 of you could work together. Put a prep sink centered on the window, again you will gain counter space plus the prep sink will be near the refrigerator which is usually where prep sinks are located. Prep sinks are usually smaller than the main, clean up sink, hence the added counter space.

I have no experience with prep sinks, my kitchens have been too small. One other thing I would caution you about is putting your range and sink across from one another on the galley if you think one of you will be in front of each at the same time. Mine are across from one another (I only have 4' between mine) and I can almost pivot and turn from my sink to my range. I imagine it would be tight if you both were in that same area at the same time.

So here are a few more options given the response from WestCoastGal and Hags00. I tried to close off the wall but don't appear to have much in the way of lower storage although I do now have an island. I was also able to put in a prep sink on one of the layouts.

You're on a slab. Moving plumbing on a slab is expensive, and really unnecessary in your case. You can achieve a good layout with the sink in the current location. Just put the fridge at the end of the run by the patio doors and put a range across the aisle against the solid wall. You really don't have room for all of the other stuff on your wish list though. Maybe in a different house....

We have a longish galley open on both ends as well. In our remodel, we will have 30" lowers and 16" uppers --> They look fine and add so much more space. I do have 5 ft between the 2 sides of the galley to make it feel less tight. Kitchen is a bit of a transit area for our layout as well. I do have sink behind the cook top and I did it to keep the sink in the same location as it was too cost-prohibitive to change the location (we are also on a slab). I did add a prep sink on the same side as the cooktop, so that I could rinse and prep veggies etc and take it to the cooktop without dripping water on the floor. In a galley, I greatly prefer a prep sink on the same counter run as the cooktop.

Thank you for the input. GWlolo, I looked at your floor plan and I would love to have 226 inches. I did take a page from your playbook and I think I'm going to try a separate fridge and freezer. That may help with the layout. I see you are going with the smaller steamer and oven. Do you think that will make a big difference? I could use the extra 5 or 6 inches that the 24 affords vs going with the 30. With all the input that I have had thus far, here is my most updated design plan. I think the freezer may be very large but I can't beat the price for a Gagg 24" full fridge and freezer.

I was also able to keep the window but not able to get in a second sink.. Instead I added a pot filler. Wondering how useful they actual are.

Again, please provide input.
