Comments (31)So, here's the thing about that bathroom... It is deep (the long way, ha!). With a 3x6.5 room, you can do a pedestal sink and toilet all in a line with a pocket door entry (see what I'm saying?) Then, I'd move your pantry to where your desk is, and use up that space in the mudroom as additional pantry space. And, put your desk where the pantry was (if you need a desk right there). or, something like that. I think, in your whole plan, this area is your weak point with a lot of space used a hall space and not near enough for paper towels, wheat thins, costco sized boxes of cereal, etc... (my pantry is your same size, but I also have more cabinet pantry space). (I wouldn't want to be carting my costco items down to the basement for storage, or up to above the garage for storage, if I usually use them on the main floor.)...See Morekitchen layout Part 2
Comments (21)cheri127 - no worries, I'm all over the place in my thoughts and what I want is changing as yours and other suggestions sound better or make me rethink my thoughts. I truly appreciate the time each of you have given in this fiascoIm about tapped out in brain energy, obviously. The laundry room as it is now doesn't have a home for the backpacks and such, if I address that then I don't have to move the door plus if I can put in a larger window in the kitchen, then that addresses the light. Plus if I really think about it the traffic flow to and from the laundry room is right through the middle of the kitchen doing laundry last night I realized it wouldnt be that easy to make it through the kitchen with a full basket of clothes. And on laundry day when I do 5-8 loads, that might not make me happy. As it is now, I have adequate storage, I certainly dont need a 5x14 pantry bet I would be I could fill it up! So if I go without the large pantry it needs a home in the kitchen proper. I have actually read the posts that give suggestions on the zones necessary and words of wisdom and thought I was following along and had this last plan on the right track must have missed the point. Option 5 (why I picked what I did) What do I want to achieve: 1)better light = bigger window 2) laundry room better utilized didnt really show it in the pic, but I can change things around in there to make it easier to use or at least I think I can 3)separate zones:DW on left that area as CleanUp, to the right of sink as Prep and right of ovens and left of range is Cooking/Baking is that okay to have both cooking baking as the same? Someone said I might want to have the fridge close to the eating area for easy access so that is why it is there. 4)Fridge in recess a way to fit it in the kitchen, maybe double glass cabinetsmeaning cabinets with glass sides on front and back to view from both kitchen and dining to store the good dinnerware. Hence the pic. 5)I want an island/peninsula for kid seating and entertainment gathering, I guess I missed that point in that the island as Ive drawn it doesnt work and creates more or less the same hassle I have nowexcept the oven is moved which I thought would help 6)Cooktop or range to me really doesnt matter. I really REALLY like the AGA legacy, but it doesnt seem big enough to cook a tray of cookies, plus the cost is an easy place to cut back meaning going w/o saves a chunk of change. I like the idea of having drawers for pots/pans under the cooktop. So that isnt a deciding factor. Comments (9)You have a wonderful kitchen area! I love the inside garden! It would be a great way to beat the winter blues when you yearn for greenery! To the subject at hand...your kitchen! I know you said the appliances were staying where they currently are, but... Are you open to considering moving the DW? Right now, it's in conflict with the range; it opens into the backs of the legs of someone working at the range. If you put it on the other side of the sink, you could have this on that wall... 15" + 15" + 9" + 24" + 24" DW + 36" Sink + 24" + 36" + 15" + 15" OTOH, if it's on the side you currently have it, it does keep it out of what will most likely be your prep zone on the refrigerator side of the long run. Prep workflow is generally Refrigerator --> Sink --> Range/Oven/MW So, your prepping will probably be on that side. BTW, I would put the MW in the pantry that's on the refrigerator side as well...closer to the refrigerator since most items cooked in a MW come from the refrigerator. I guess the DW location is a matter of personal preference in this case since there are pros & cons to both locations. Hmmm...the more I think about it, the more I think the current location may be best...especially if I can talk you into a separate trash pullout! Maybe that other side could be a Baking Center? Does your family bake much? Or, how about a Beverage Center? ++++++++++ A trash can in the pantry isn't very accessible to the rest of the kitchen, are you sure that's the best place for it? When I'm prepping & cooking, I don't want to have walk too far to throw something out...dripping all the way, especially if I have several items to throw out! If you put your trash can under the sink, you will not be able to easily access it from elsewhere if someone is working at the sink. A trash pullout is easily accessed by everyone...prepping, cooking, cleaning up. It's easier, IMHO, to access trash while working at the sink if it's at the side rather than directly beneath you where you have to step out of the way to get to it. You could do one of the following (or some variation). Both have the trash on the right so it's easily accessed from the sink as well as range. 18" + 18" + 9" + 24" + 18" Trash + 36" Sink + 24" DW + 30" + 18" + 18" (18" cabinets are more useful than 15") Or, how about.... 21" + 24" + 24" + 18" Trash + 36" Sink + 24" DW + 24" + 24" + 18" [Does IKEA have 21" cabinets? If not, consider an 18" and a 3" filler pullout on that side...or leave the 3" as filler or "wiggle room" along that run, if needed. If you find you don't need it, then get a filler pullout...all it needs is a toekick and door or slab for the front. Filler pullouts are attached to the sides of the cabinets on either side so they have to be put in at cabinet installation time.] 9" of space really isn't much & I think it could be better used if merged into the rest of the cabinets. As for the sink basins, they have not been selected yet, but they will be big enough. @rhome410 Good food for thought, integrated, more or less, in to this new iteration. @springroz I really like the idea of a prep sink/prep area. Especially with where the fridge and stove are now, I think it will be a easy pull out of the fridge and place on the island. The island can also be a staging are for foods going to the stove. Not that you do not raise some valid points, I just see this working better for us. Ok, here is my latest iteration. I do not even want to know what version I am up to now. This kitchen design thing is more difficult than designing a network/phone/IVR for multinational call center :P Notes and stuff: - Loc A: 2 shallow drawers for cooking utensils. An open vertical area for cookie sheets, cooling racks, etc - Loc B: 1 shallow drawer for alum foil, parchmnet, plastic bags and the like. 2 deep drawers for regularly used pots and pans. - Loc C: 1 shallow drawer for flatware. Pullout for garbage - Loc D: 1 or 2 banks of 4 drawers - Loc E: Full height pull out for garbage and recycling - Loc F: Appliance (Mixer) lift and a bank of 4 drawers - Log G: Narrow (12") drawers or a door (or both) and an open corner. Message center, home phone, charging center, etc. This will also be the "flex area" for expansion. The way I see it is that I will have the cabinet and corner fitted with a sacraficial peice that the counter will be glued to. When/if the time comes that we want a wider fridge (up to 48"), we just remove the cabinet section, attach a new sacrafical peice and put the cutdown counter on that. It is all very simple in my head, not sure if I typed it out as simple as I see it. - Basement steps: When I go to look at the house again today, one thing I am going to look at the feasability of mounting a recessed MW in the wall there as well as trash and recycling center. Either to eliminate one of those area in the kitchen proper or to suplement them. There may be some other things I can do there to. (Recessed buffet and/or dry bar area or other convieniance. - Dining room wall. I know I can open up the doorway to a full 10'. Currently at 3.5' (I have it on here as opened to 5') and the partial wall is 6.5'. I may explore the potential of opening it all the way to the angled storage area, for a total of 13.5' of opening in to the dining room. I think the design is all coming together nicely.
