Backsplash tile issue

The tiles for my backsplash arrived yesterday and I'm really disappointed. I chose Blue Celeste marble subway tiles from Ann Sacks and on both the concept board I saw at the store and the picture on their website, the tiles ranged from an ice light blue to a light-medium blue.

Well, the tiles are all consistently the palest of pale blues. There is little variation and certainly nothing close to the light-medium color. At first I thought it was a trick of my memory but when I opened the few pencil tiles I had ordered, lo and behold, they were the darkest blue on the concept board. There were no field tiles like that in the boxes.

I phoned my salesperson at Ann Sacks today and she expressed surprise. She said "most people like consistent and complain about variation!" That's all well and good but that's not what the concept board showed. When I said that, she answered, "oh, the concept board is six years old." How about the website then?

We left it that she will see if they can handpick a box of darker tiles to be mixed in, but she sounded doubtful. Of course, I'd have to pay for them, plus they are 5sf out of the 35 I have, so they would certainly be few and far between.

Ugh, I feel so let down. This is not the backsplash I fell in love with. What happened to truth in advertising?

Nope....don't settle for that answer. Call back and don't talk to a salesperson....talk to an owner or manager. If their display board shows variation, and the web site DOES show variation, than that is what you paid for, not the pale blue consistent tile you were shipped. that tile is not cheap....don't let them bully you on this one. I hate when retailers try to pull one over on the buying public!

Agree with ccombs1--call and ask to speak to a manager. If they're still using a 6 year old concept board, then it should still be correct. If they can't come up with the varying tiles and that changes your mind about this backsplash, they should make this right by either a refund or helping you select more tile to replace the blue celeste tile.

My granite supplier advised using tile from the granite up (no granite back splash). She could have advised the other way and made a little more money, so I think she advised based on her honest opinion. I also like the "no granite back splash" look better. Just guessing, I'd say the only reason to use the 4" granite back splash would be if you weren't going to use any other back splash at all (a more low-budget option, in my opinion).

Don't discount the fact that the top to your blender might come off while making margaritas. That can get everywhere! (Personal experience.) Or the fact that when you are teaching a youngster how to make a red velvet cake that you forget to tell them one of the first things about using a mixer is that you don't pull it out of the batter with it running. (Also personal experience, and you have no idea how far flung batter can be until you are cleaning it off of the ceiling 15' away from the accident.) Then there's the time my sister didn't really put the espresso maker together correctly and tried to make a pot. Thankfully, that wasn't my kitchen, and no actual bloodshed resulted, but you can bet she'd rather make a run to Starbucks these days than clean up those grounds. And the dent in the underside of the cabinet is still there, but you have to stand on your head to really see it. Then there was the time the cat had an ear abcess and the first I really knew of it (super fuzzy guy) was the blood he had slung all over the kitchen when he shook his head when it burst. Even with him on the floor, yes, it went everywhere and was a bear to clean off of the painted walls. I'd hate to think about a more porous stone with it on it. There was also the mess from the brother in law who cleaned fish in the kitchen.....and the spouse who thought it would be a great idea to use a spray cleaner on a greasy engine part and splattered that black yucky grease everywhere when the cleaner hit it.....and the time that the fruit punch spilled into the cooler, and instead of pouring that outside, a brilliant soul decided to try to pour it down the kitchen sink and splashed it everywhere.......and I could go on and on. I don't think my stories are too atypical of a lot of the wear and tear a kitchen will see over time, and I could never see putting in a surface that wasn't easily cleanable and stain resistant, even if your kitchen's occupants are more thoughtful and well behaved. I couldn't ever be a marble person, anywhere in the home. There's too much life being lived here to have to worry about delicate surfaces.

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

I'm not sure how I came across this post, I think it was displayed on the right side and I clicked on it being intrigued by the tile making. I was at one time interested in working with papercrete and hypertufa. But after enlisting my brother, who wasn't as enthusiastic, and my niece, who poured cement down my laundry room sink, which original to the house had lasted 70 years, and ruining three blenders, my interest waned. True to form, if I come upon difficulty in a project, I think of it as a sign for me not to continue. And really, after all these years of trying various crafts that result in crap, I should know better. I also should have known better than to ask my brother, who always says it can't be done to any of my unique design ideas. And I should have known better than to ask my niece, who once stayed up all night before having to drive to LA for an art show, cutting mat after mat after measuring once, twice, sometimes ten times, but always coming out with the wrong size. I think we both have math dyslexia. I should video us trying anything crafty to see where we go wrong. I think both of us having ADHD might have something to do with it. Sorry for the backstory and run on sentences. So, I just wanted to see if you continued with your venture. And to say sorry for whatever tragedy occurred to cause you to have to move to Florida. Not that there is anything wrong with Florida, but it isn't Panama. Which is one of my favorite places in the western hemisphere. I hope no one is upset that I brought up a seven year old post.

Thanks for the good advice. The salesperson hasn't called me back but I've decided if she doesn't by end of business day today, I'll call the number for the corporate HQ listed on the webpage first thing tomorrow. My contractor wanted to start putting up the backsplash tomorrow, but I'll ask him to wait.

I really do feel like I was misled about this.

How funny, as soon as I posted this, she called. She said the warehouse people did think they could come up with enough darker pieces to put together a box. They just want me to send them (or she can send it from the shop if I bring it over) one field tile ass a point of reference to find darker ones.

I asked, "so if there are darker tiles, why are mine all light?" She answered, "luck of the draw." She emphasized that with natural stone you just get what you get.

But I still don't think I should pay for these and tomorrow, I will call HQ to see what they say about the issue.

I don't think you should pay either. If they give you a REALLY hard time on this issue, tell them you'll send them back a box of the light ones at their expense for the shipping.

I'd be upset. Years ago I would have said ok but not anymore. Make sure you get what you ordered!!!

I've stopped at the Ann Sacks in Kohler, WI. Their tiles are beautiful and I love to go in and look around.

I did ask if I could exchange a box and she said they charge a 25% restocking fee.

BTW, I did not mean to put that extra s in as. Perhaps I was thinking too deeply about how I feel about Ann Sacks at the moment. ;-)

There shouldn't be ANY restocking fee as this was their fault. I would fight that one.

Thanks, Mahlgold, I agree. When I remembered that they are three hours behind here, I phoned, they had me write out my complaint via e-mail, and I just got a call from the showroom manager.

He said he would call the warehouse and see what they could do. He asked me what my ideal resolution was, and I said, to have two or three of the boxes replaced with darker tile.

I worry a bit (and he brought this up too) that they won't work together, but they looked good on the concept board, so I hope that will be the case on my walls too.

He brought up the restocking fee and I said, "with all due respect, this is what I paid for so I don't think I should pay more to make it so." He said he would give me a call tomorrow after they open west coast time.

So we'll see! My contractor practically had a conniption. We are both for own reasons dying to have my job done before he and his guys go on vacation on the 22nd. I made this clear to the AS manager.
