Question for those with separate clean up and snack/prep zones

Some of you are aware of my ongoing struggle with my layout. Every time I fix one problem, I seem to create another. Well, here's my latest issue. Is it better to store the everyday dishes, glassware and cutlery at the point of first use (e.g., next to the fridge and MW) or at the point of last use (next to the DW)? If I store the dishes next to the DW, it's a trek across the entire kitchen (granted it's only 16X14, but still...) to get a plate or cup or knife to make a snack or meal. If I store the dishes et al near the fridge and MW, it's a trek with heavy dishes to put things away. Advice, thoughts, experiences??!! Thanks!

Nothing is ever easy in the land of the TKO!

For those who are not familiar with my posts: We are a family of 4 (plus a small dog), with two little ones (3 1/2 and 8 months), and this is our living here through (at least) high school house (in So. Cal.).
