So, how do I live without a garbage disposal?
Comments (40)We have septic at both our home and lake cabin and though we have a disposal at home we don't use it - other than for what Sue36 mentions - flicking it on to suck the dishwater down the drain more quickly. Sure - you can have one if you push it - but why? Have you ever seen someone's property torn up to install a replacement septic system or had to buy one? It's happening alot where I live. People will say they've never had a problem with their septic system but in reality a septic system can be failing without being apparent to the homeowner. I keep all the little plastic bags I get at stores and use one each time I'm prepping a meal - set it right by me and the cutting board. I'll put all the plant type stuff in one since we recycle that type of waste - composting of sorts - but we don't make compost for gardening, etc. - we leave the compost in the woods. If I have yucky meat or fish type stuff I put that in a separate bag and tie it tightly shut. I will either put it in the inside trash can or take it out to the garbage can. We too don't have a huge kitchen trash can so garbage doesn't stay inside very long. The other thing I've done - if I want to peel a bunch of things into the sink so the peels aren't flying all over - is line the sink with a newspaper - peel away into the newspaper - then pick paper and peels up when done - no muss, no fuss. Really, it's not a big that big a deal - if it's the worst problem you have to deal with you'll be a lucky person....See MoreShare your 'living through kitchen reno' tips
Comments (15)First, keep your eye on the prize. A wonderful new kitchen. Forget about today's food. Knee deep into week 3. Painters tomorrow on Mon and Tues, cabinets come on Wed, appliances arrive Thurs. I am guessing it will be a week from Friday til it is 85% done. Havent picked out countertop yet. Have the sink, faucet and soap dispenser, but keeping my options open re the sink. I thought about this today. Have a lot of plastic grocery bags and rolls of paper towels. Food is not a big deal for us and we have had pizza once and gyros twice. I Cook very little, but we are empty nesters and dh only eats a sandwich for dinner. So I buy deli tuna salad and reheatable double cheeseburgers, toss the buns, low carb, big lettuce containers, deli cheese, almonds, grapes, bananas. It's relatively short term anyway. Rotisserie chicken. Unprocessed stuff. Deli stuff. Cabbage and chicken salad. Lean cuisines. Nuke eggs or beaters in sprayed mugs. Have microwave and fridge. I precooked a bunch of chicken breasts, plain, which are still untouched in the freezer. We don't, nor do we care to, have wonderful dinners every night. Dh goes out to a nice lunch a few times a week. If I still had starving teens, I'd have milk and cereal, "the great (thursday nite) cereal buffet and get sushi for dd. raw veggies and spinach dip. Simple and plain. Home brewed and store bought Starbucks. wine. it is ok. So happy about the kitchen our food is minor. The kitchen is a little miracle. Again, plastic bags(save 'em beforehand), paper towels, cooking spray, paper plates, and whatever are your own personal necessities and convenience items....See MoreHow long did you live without a sink?
Comments (16)We've been without a sink since July 7th. Our German au pair arrived on July 12th. It's been a long haul, and I'm soooo excited that the project is nearly done. Assuming all goes well with the countertop installation next week, we'll have a fully working kitchen by Oct. 15th. Our au pair has been great - when the kids are in school, she goes out and stays out of the way of the workmen. We were very open with her about the renovation before she came and told her what to expect - the last thing we wanted to deal with were dashed expectations....See MoreNeed tips for surviving 4 weeks with no kitchen
Comments (24)4 weeks? I am going on 4 months, but tomorrow the counter goes in, then the tile and I should be ready to move back in the kitchen real soon. DH is finishing up on the painting. What took so long was that DS and DH did most of the work. Had a contractor come in and install cabinets, trim, crown molding, microwave vent and little odds and ends. We opened a wall from the kitchen to dining room, and that involved painting in the other rooms as well. (also living room) It is all coming together. I have been lucky because we have another (you know, Italian) kitchen in the basement. That was a life saver, DH set up the microwave, toaster, and toaster oven on top of the bar which I used daily. I also did a great deal of cooking on the BQ, which was easy for clean up. Only thing, I had to hand wash all dishes in the laundry tub. All in all, I'm happy to have that set-up. As soon as I learn how to post pictures, I will....See Moredaki
