How long did you live without a sink?

Expo called me today, my Franke sink won't be in until October 22nd. Granite guys want to install the granite this Thursday. So that would leave us kitchen sinkless until it comes in and can be installed. We have a big laundry room sink about 10 steps away...no big deal, right?

The hard part is that we may have a German exchange student coming. If we pass the family visit today anyway...Half the counters are ripped out, the bathroom sink is gone....she's going to think we are freaks. I guess I'll be upfront about the sink situation, in case it is a big deal.

It should be interesting!

At least you'll have water on the main floor! We were without a sink/water (including toilet) on the first floor for 4 months.

What kind of sink do you have that you don't have to have it available for granite install? Drop in? Even with a drop in, I wouldn't let them install the granite until all my appliances, sink(s), faucet(s), soap dispenser(s), air switch(es), etc. are present. (They templated w/o all of your items available????)

5 months now. No joke. But I'm a single guy.

You have a big sink 10 steps away? I guess I don't see the issue.

We have been renting since October 07. We had neighbors offer for our home as they knew we would be building soon. We sold them our house and moved next door into the home they had been renting. It was a little strange, and sooner than we wanted to move but we were concerned about the real estate market so we went ahead and sold. It was also hard to leave a home we loved for a rental vs moving on to our dream home. Our plans were not even complete at that point. We broke ground on May 28, '08. We had a rental on our property and just as we were getting started our tenants moved out of the mobile home near the building site. Since we knew we would be doing alot of work on the house after drywall we decided it made sense to live on site, no more rent was great too. :) We did some renovating of the mobile and moved in last July. So we have been renting/living in the mobile for about 17 months and it will likely be 21 total by the time we move into the new house. We have had our share of 'ick' and challenges through this process (like yesterday when the water heater in this 30 year old mobile home exploded!), but we are glad we sold when we did and the positives have far outweighed the negatives. We bought our house in '98 and I knew I hated the kitchen the minute I walked in. However, it was the workshop center of the house as we restored each and every room...slowly but surely. We redid every major system; heating, windows, roof, floors, plumbing, electrical, plaster to drywall, paint, finish carpentry, landscaping, sidewalks, fencing. Then, last year we started talking about adding a garage and having contractors rebuild the Victorian front porch we had torn off (helped it fall off really) years ago. We tore out the kitchen right before they started with the garage/porch. That makes 12+ years with a carpeted, golden oak abomination. msmarion I agree they are not attractive boots but none the less I live in a drafty house close to the beach and it has been a cold winter here in Fla, other fake furs do not keep my feet warm at all and none are as comfortable as Uggs. Trishaw, I would have preferred the light sand color but like I said before Dillard's only had a few Uggs in stock, I feel blessed to have found any shade in my size. Glad your still enjoying yours after all these years.

We listed in May of 2007 with a local realtor with a good reputation who had been in the business for a few years. Our asking price was $10k less than the house two doors away which was a bit smaller than ours and did not have a new kitchen, bath, and other features ours had. We saw three houses that were in our neighborhood, one listed at $5k more than ours and the other two listed even higher sell in the first 3 months we had ours listed. I'm very realistic and just knew that ours wasn't being marketed effectively. Also, I could look at the good and bad in our home and knew ours was in much better condition and in a better location than two of the three that sold. Two of them were on a busy street while ours was on one of the most desired streets in our town. We ended up cancelling our listing after promises similar to yours of people who were "really interested" never materialized. We were going to forget about moving for awhile and relax about the whole selling situation. However, I saw an article in a local paper the week after our listing was cancelled about a real go-getter in the RE business. She didn't promise to sell in any specified amount of time but this woman sold houses that others didn't, even after being listed for months. Two months after listing with her and having had three times as many showings as we had in 7 months with the other realtor, we sold our home. The couple who bought our house wanted to look at it after driving by, they hadn't been looking in our area but our home caught their eye. Their realtor called ours after hours and they saw the house at 9:00 P.M. on a Saturday night because they were scheduled to fly home the next morning. When she asked me if I would leave the dining room drapes, I knew we had sold our home. She said she walked in and knew that was it. We had come down in price about $40k, but it was only 5% of our original asking price so I was happy to sell when we did. We had also cancelled a contract we had on another home that we were going to build when our home didn't sell with our original realtor. In the long run, we ended up getting a bit less for our home, but we also bought our new home for less than we would have and received even more builders' incentives so in the long run, things worked out for the best. I know that is hard to hear but I kept telling myself that everything happens for a reason and it is true. We just need a lot of patience to believe that and keep telling yourself that whatever happens is meant to be. I'm not making light of the situation for those who have to sell and haven't been able to but I really do believe everything happens the way it's supposed to in life. If you're not happy with your realtor, evaluate the situation and think about finding a new one if you don't think they are doing their job. Take a good, hard look at your home with a critical eye and ask your friends to tell you what you can do to improve your home. We had friends offer excellent advice but because we lived with it on a daily basis, we never saw our home the way others did. Most of all, your home has to be priced right. I've noticed in the area we left, homes have come down an average of 5 to 7% since we left and some of them were on the market at the same time ours was. If it's not priced right, it won't sell, no matter how nice it is. Good luck to everyone and may the new year bring you a buyer for your home!

Four months? Yikes!

It is a franke fireclay. I believe they've already cut from the template provided. Now I've just read that there is a chance of a fireclay having a variation in size...great. I have everything else here. They templated the counters last week.
No matter how much GW I read, I am still messing up. SO much to worry about and we aren't even DOING that much.

It was about 2 - 2 1/2 months, but like you I had a laundry room sink. That posed a problem to though as the laundry room is attached to the kitchen, so not convenient at all when work is being done in the kitchen. We used paper plates and plastic silverware a lot.

We've been without our sink since mid-August. We do have a utility sink in the mud room, off of the kitchen , but it's not the same!! We're using as much disposable tableware as possible - certainly not ideal, but do-able. I keep telling myself that all of this will be worth the wait...

we were three weeks without a sink on the 1st floor. you're lucky to have a laundry sink so close.

i was without a sink for a day.. :-)

i cut out the counter and old sink in one piece.. once the new sink basin was installed i just plopped the old sink and counter piece on top of the new sink basin and attached temporarily until the granite guy came out to install the new granite with new sink attached..

So far 6 weeks without a sink or BR or toilet downstairs. Hope to be done by mid Nov. Our GC did take our old sink and dropped it into a hole cut in one of our old cabinets and put it out in the backyard with cold water hooked up from the hose. We are using mostly disposable, but the sink is handy as long as we can do the dishes when it is light out and it is getting dark earlier. (No electicity out there til the construction is done)

Two months of using the laundry sink in the garage, which was quite a bit more than 10 steps away. The day the water was hooked up at the kitchen sink I just stood there and let running water from my beautiful faucet run over my hands and into my beautiful sink for three long and glorious minutes. My kids thought I was nuts. Your turn will come.

1 looong month without a kitchen sink. We had our laundry tub(the next room over) for dishes, but I nearly blew a gasket every time I did dishes in there because nobody seemed to understand the concept that there was no garbage disposal. DH works from home, so I can't control all post-meal cleanup, table clearing, etc.

9 months. Oct. 2007 until June 2008. I got so used to not having a sink, even after it was installed, I found myself walking from the kitchen to the bathroom for water out of habit.

NEVER want to go there again.

Sue - LOL! Me too! I was sinkless for about 8 months. Took about a week before I stopped going down the hall to the bathroom to wash fruit and dump the excess tea kettle water.

We've been without a sink since July 7th. Our German au pair arrived on July 12th. It's been a long haul, and I'm soooo excited that the project is nearly done. Assuming all goes well with the countertop installation next week, we'll have a fully working kitchen by Oct. 15th. Our au pair has been great - when the kids are in school, she goes out and stays out of the way of the workmen. We were very open with her about the renovation before she came and told her what to expect - the last thing we wanted to deal with were dashed expectations.
