How do you get dust off your cabinets?

When the sun shines in at 8AM in the morning at that certain angle, all the dust is highlighted. I have tried getting it off, but nothing take it off. They must be electrostatically charged. We have never used anything to clean them besides a cloth and dish soap. I am not sure why the dust is attracted. Is there a solution to the dust dilemna, besides never having a guest that wakes up early?

If a damp cloth doesn't take it off, it may be in the actual finish rather than on top of it. Were these factory cabinets, or custom? Where was the finish work done?

Not a Californian, but when the nighttime lows start to be around 45 it gets my attention, so now is a good time to start "dusting off the greenhouse." I have plants in there year round, but now I'll get my electric heaters out of storage and plug them into the thermostats. We've had some lows in the high 40s, so it's also time to start moving my non-hardy potted plants off the patios and into their winter home. The crew that lives in the greenhouse year round gets shifted into tighter formations, to make room for the others. Lugging those big pots around is not quite as much fun as it was when I was a few years younger. Fall never seems to last long enough...

How do I get rid of all the new house construction dust?

Start with cleaning the walls, windows and high shelves, moldings, etc. Use an extension pole with a damp mircrofibre if you're not into ladders. I found a large microfibre mop works great for dusting the walls. Don't forget the dust clings to wood moldings, windows, top of doors and their frames, light fixtures and the bulbs too!! Literally, you have to wipe down every surface, whether it be in front of you, above you, hiding from you or beneath you. LOL Vacum the floor really well after you're finished with all the other surfaces then mop with a mild solution of vinegar and water. Of course if you have carpets, just vacum really well. I just started cleaning our new new house and boy, it is not an easy taste. Well, it's easy in that the dust comes right up, but there is so much to clean!! Good luck.

Found a local janitorial supply company. They sold me a 12 foot extension rod and duster. Saved $50 off of Frontgate price. They said it would reach 30 feet as you would hold the rod over your head (and depending on your height that would be 6 - 8 feet). Turns out that isn't quite true (for those of you who may be in the same boat) as the rod and duster, although the rod is hollow, is somewhat heavy to hold over your head and manipulate. I'm more comfortable having some of the rod below my hands. Did work though. No more dust kitties on the ledge!

During a house renovation what do you use to keep dust off everything?

A few points. A competent general contractor will have sub contractors do things to minimize the dust and debris. They will all say it it difficult to eliminate 100% of it, but the better ones come close. Some general things that come to mind immediately, based on your brief description are 1) seal off individual rooms, using plastic sheating and tape, 2.) do all cutting outside, 3.) clean up at the end of each and every day, -- I'll emphasize meticulously clean up everything, at the end of any day no debris or demolition materials left inside, and any debris, cuttings or sawdust created outside in a driveway or parking lot are cleaned up daily (not the next morning). If they are not doing 2.) then quickly find another CG. Nos 1 & 3 are standard, and the degree to which they do this is a measure of their workmanship. If you have any type of forced air heating or cooling then get a full duct cleaning after all the work is complete. And of course change air filters after the cleaning.

Could the dish soap have oils or leave residue that attracts it like furniture polish does? Do you use a lint free rag? Those are hard to find actually. Seems anything cloth, even the microfibers that aren't supposed to, always shed loose fibers and dust.

I don't think dust ever takes a holiday.

this happens to me but on my stainless steal fridge. A certain time of year the way the sun shines in highlights that the dust is on there even though I wipe down every day. It just gets pushed around even though I use microfiber cloths with various cleaners (409/windex/ss cleaner)

Even if I try to vacuum them at 8AM, I can see all the dust just being pushed around. I don't know if the soap caused it. Agreed, it is hard to find a lint free cloth.

What color are your cabinets? I have a mahogany media center and OMG in the right light the dust just screams. There does some to be some electrostatic attraction, because I can greatly reduce the dust, but there's always a bit that clings. Grrrrrrr.

Have you tried the swiffer dusters? That's what my housekeeper prefers.

The Swiffer dusters work pretty good on cabinets. While I can see the dust sticking to the refrigerator in the early morning light, the "swiffered" cabinets surrounding it appear dust-free.

Yep, we use Swiffer, the kind on the extendable handle. Those suckers really reach, and seem to counteract at least some of the electricity. Good for ceiling fans and top of fridge, too.

IIRC, I once saw my housekeeper mist hers with Static Cling, but I don't remember what, specifically, she was cleaning that time.
