Is a reflector bulb the same as a flood bulb? Says Flood 40 degrees on one of the sides of the box that the electrician left here with me to help me decide what I would want. This is the bulb he installs and if I want another bulb, I would have to buy it but I need to know what bulbs would fit in this fixture or what I should ask or what is a BR40 bulb since I never heard of it.

A BR40 (or R40) bulb is interchangable with a PAR38. The difference is the PAR38 is built more robustly, with a separate reflector and a shaped clear glass lens with striations or bumps on it that carefully focus the light beam. The BR40 is a simpler blown-glass bulb where the whole thing is one piece of shaped glass, with a simple smooth, frosted lens. The result is a bulb that throws light everywhere, not as well focused or glare-resistant as a good PAR38 bulb, but cheaper (which is no doubt why the electrician uses them, to lower his estimates).

This particular bulb is less bright, uses more electricity, gets hotter, doesn't spread light as wide, and has a lower color temperature than the GE PAR38 bulb I recommended in your other thread. If he throws in the bulbs for free, you can try them and see if they'll suffice, else get the GE haolgen/IR bulbs or an LED. You can reuse both the can/fixture and the trim if you change to a better halogen bulb; changing to LED in some cases involves changing the trim as well as the bulb; on others only the LED bulb changes, but the can should work for either halogen or LED.

Thank you so much Lee676! I wanted to go with that GE halogen/IR Bulb you suggested on an LED bulb. He left one bulb in the sink and it is not glare free like the halogen bulbs above my gas range and the color is not as nice to me. So maybe the light fixture he will give me will look too big for the GE PAR38 bulb or I can buy one of these bulbs and ask if he can bring me his can over to see if it would fit?

Another electrician is coming by tonight. I will print out the information on the bulb I want to see if can he give me a can to install it and what would his price be.

a PAR38 is the largest common recessed bulb size, so the light fixture is unlikely to be too big. Every electrician worth their salt should know the size of a PAR38 bulb, they are ubiquitous indoors and out. Can should be either 6" or slightly larger.

Thank you Lee676 for letting me that PAR38 is a common size. I was told by the other contractor that PAR38 bulbs were better for outside but the new contractor likes PAR38 bulbs. I am waiting for a quote from this new electrician and then I have to make my decision. I just like that the electrician that gave me that BR40 bulb that I don't like, would install my fixture for free in the dining room (matter of switching fixtures so not a lot of work) and replace the can over the sink for free but I do not know if his can is a spring type can.

The other electrician finally gave me a quote since he has been so busy with a big job far away. His quote is $85 more and he will be giving me PAR 38 GE Reveal Bulb with only a 25 degree flood. I had reveal incandescent bulbs and I did not like the way the light was so blue. He says if I want other bulbs, he will charge me for the other bulbs and credit me for the bulbs he was going to give me. He claims his can is better and updated and adjusted for all bulbs sizes with springs but did not answer my question on what can is he giving me. I liked his knowledge when he came here but maybe the cans will be the same of both electricians and I will be replacing the bulbs of both. He also says that if I want LED, he will buy them and credit me for the bulbs he was to give me. He says he will try out bulbs to see which one I like. He was only going to adjust the can over the sink to have the bulb come more out and not be so recessed since I replaced the incandescent with a Home Depot Ecosmart LED 3,000K 850 Lumens 75 watts above my sink to try out that light spectrum and it was so much better than the PAR 40 Bulb he provided with the glaring light and the 2,700K light spectrum which did not look any different to me than the ugly incandescent bulb that was above the sink that was a PAR40 bulb.

What questions should I ask both of these installers to decide since both have good ratings the cheaper one lives closer to me but I worry that his cans could be outdated since he is installing the Sunlite Halogen BR40 bulb.

I have in my Amazon cart the bulb you mentioned and the Sylvania Par38 LED bulb that has a CRI of 95 and a light spectrum of 3,000K but it is $50.00 plus about $6 shipping if I want to try out the bulb and now there is only 12 left! The other places were charging a lot more.

P.S. There are only 12 bulbs left of the Sylvania LED bulbs (but only a 30 flood... the Sylvania LED with more lumens that is a PAR30 has a 40 degrees flood) that I think I would like at that cheap price on Amazon. Other sites are selling the bulb for $77 plus shipping and others for $95 plus shipping! I wish I had ordered one so I would know if I would like this and if the can of the cheaper guy is the same or the other guy can get this bulb at this good price and charge me the same but don't forget he lives farther so has more gas to come here. Let me check out your PAR38 GE Bulb again. I don't think I would like his reveal bulb since I like seeing some yellow that the 3,000 light spectrum lets me see in a whiter light format.

OK, last night and today I tested the GE Bulb with the 2850K, 55 beam radius and 60 watts used up for a 75 watt bulb producing 1050 lumen's. Yesterday I loved the bulb but last night I went to Lowe's to pick up the Sullivan Bulb at 3,000K, 980 Lumen's and at first I loved it since it gave a 50 beam radius and was slightly whiter but then I decided that the GE was a little nicer. But I was shocked when I put the Reveal 75 950 Lumen's 75 Watts PAR38 bulb in my can above the sink (I put a tile there to see the color for each bulb) and then in various lamps on the top that I could point the lamp at my tiles on the floor and on the cabinets. I wish the spread was more than 25 but I love the color and it does not look real blue like the incandescent blue bulbs I did not like. I still see yellow when something is yellow but it does not add a yellow cast the ivory in my tile is not yellowish gray ivory. It also makes red more red. I asked a neighbor to come by and he also liked the bulb and thought I should have the electrician install them and I still have the two GE HIR PAR38 Bulbs that have the great floor here in case I want to try them in the ceiling. The electrician also will replace the can over the sink with a new can.

Why is the electrician giving me a long adjustable can when all the bulbs I like have short necks? Is this acceptable? He feels with the technology changing so fast, I should have flexibility.

I have to call him tomorrow to tell him I am ready to see a date next week since he says he is busy this week. I am choosing the more expensive electrician for the time he spent with me going over bulbs to make sure I am happy and the price difference is not that great and he is less than the electrician that wanted to put 10 4" cans in my kitchen. I think I will be happy with the 6" cans that can handle higher wattage bulbs with the white baffle and white trim to match my ceilings.
