Are all the bulbs the same? Our kitchen and den have 6" cans, and most of them have regular 65 watt flood bulbs. But in part of the kitchen after we did our remodel a few years ago, I was disappointed that it wasn't as bright as I wanted it to be. I went to a lighting store, hoping there was some way to put a higher wattage bulbs in the cans, and instead, they sold me a Westinghouse Halogena flood bulb which is the same size and shape, but is 75 watts (15% more power) and puts out 70% more lumens of light; it completely solved my lighting problem in the kitchen. That's probably not your case, and I don't know if anyone makes a 65 watt halogen flood, but I just thought I'd throw out there that it's not a given that all bulbs which look alike put out the same lumens of light. As for dimmers, I can say definitively that with good quality modern dimmers, you won't hear any buzzing at all. I've become a big fan of the Lutron Maestro dimmers, and have slowly installed them in lots of places around out house. I've never heard a hint of a buzz from any of them. (I like the Maestros better than the Divas, but I assume they both have similar build quality.) -- Eric

It is usually necessary to cut out a square of ceiling larger than the fixture, remove the fixture and housing, install a new fixture and then patch the hole. Once, on some 6" fixtures I was able to remove the interior trim and replace it with a "cross blade" trim made for the original housing. Using frosted PAR 30 lamps also helped.

springvillegardens - are you looking at UC lights for ambient lighting or for task lighting? Many contractors seem to think that people want it just for aesthetics, not for function...and thus the suggestion of using rope lights. Rope lights, IMO, are NOT going to give you enough working light - I would strongly suggest going with LED strips. We went with lighting from EnviromentalLights.com - they were extremely helpful...I sent them a drawing of the kitchen and they laid out exactly what I needed and put it in a cart for me. We talked a bit more about some of the things I was looking for and so on and they helped revise my cart then as well. All in all, a very smooth process. Yes, it was more money than rope lighting, but I have wonderfully bright lighting to work with and I opted to have a dimmer also for them and it dims beautifully in the evenings as an ambient light source.

Hmmm I wonder if it would be too hot if only 14â away from head or starting at 14â back from countertop. Or, if standing at cabinet center the light would be (roughly) 22â off face to side back. I have bought the mirrors already and the sconces after reading that others who were in the alcove lighting position did so to diffuse harsh overhead lighting. I didnâÂÂt read anything about it being too hot. Now I wonder!!! I guess if it was too hot and I went to 45w each it would still diffuse and spread light. We donâÂÂt really spend that much time in the mirror to ignite as I can put my makeup on in less than seven minutes and that includes plucking.
