reguardless of what type of bulb you put into the recessed lights, you should buy only Insulation Contact Air Tight (ICAT) recessed lights. these cans have no holes in the housing to allow attic air & insulation particles into the house. IC lights have these holes in the housing. As the air moves through the insulation surrounding an IC can, it lowers the efficiency of the insulation. one IC light = 1 sq ft of uninsulated attic due to the air movement. purchase price by case of ICAT is not much more than IC. but to retrofit to AT with trim kits and inserts will cost about $15 per light. the stickers inside the recessed lights can be decieving. halo for instance has a red sticker that says in big letters AIR TIGHT..in smaller letters ..when used with the following inserts/trims. a true halo ICAT light has an orange air tight sticker inside the can. shop wisely, so that you don't add to heating/cooling load of house & compromise both insulation & indoor air quality. best of luck

Check your existing CFL cans to see if the can has an integrated ballast. If it does, the ballast needs to be disconnected. If the bulb is not connected using an E26 base connector, it is likely that the can has an integrated ballast. Then, you'd need to change the connector to a GU24 and use CR6/ CR4 like lamps which use a GU24 base connector. Technically, a E26 base connector can be used, but that might not be allowed legally in your jurisdiction. For instance, California has very strict rules in Title 24. If you decide to use an electrician's services, swapping out the can and light might be the recommended route.

springvillegardens - are you looking at UC lights for ambient lighting or for task lighting? Many contractors seem to think that people want it just for aesthetics, not for function...and thus the suggestion of using rope lights. Rope lights, IMO, are NOT going to give you enough working light - I would strongly suggest going with LED strips. We went with lighting from EnviromentalLights.com - they were extremely helpful...I sent them a drawing of the kitchen and they laid out exactly what I needed and put it in a cart for me. We talked a bit more about some of the things I was looking for and so on and they helped revise my cart then as well. All in all, a very smooth process. Yes, it was more money than rope lighting, but I have wonderfully bright lighting to work with and I opted to have a dimmer also for them and it dims beautifully in the evenings as an ambient light source.

A light over the sink on a separate circuit would be good. Other than that, the layout is fine. The work spaces will be mainly lit by the UCL, so there should be enough light at night. If you must have more, an additional pair can be added. The final position of each can depends on the space and obstructions above the ceiling board.
