X/post- recessed lights x mirror x sconce & aesthetically nice.
This is a cross post due to slow traffic in the bathroom and other forums.
Hi all I could use your advice here. I have an alcove vanity area of roughly 78" long. There will be a 30" vanity on each end with a 24 x 36" mirror above each. The center area of run will have an 18" bank of drawers and a 12" d shallow countertop vertical storage with drawer going up in center of run, there will be roughly 3" on each side of mirrors. The vanities are 21" deep before tops. So I have ordered two of these sconces, one on each alcove wall for mirror lighting and plan on one or two recessed ceiling lights above each mirror. There will also be a center recessed light coming out further from wall in ceiling.
Sconce is a double 5"W 41/2" D 15" H. When mounted on alcove side wall it would protrude 1 1/2 inches into mirror.

QUESTIONS:
The room the vanity is in is 78 3/4" x 6'2" with an 8' ceiling. Yes I know the lighting is not ideal but do you think it okay? Should I go with two recessed lights above each mirror? Would one be enough? Also, I know little about recessed lighting, do some give off more lighting than others?
I want light but also do not want the area jumbled looking.
Assume you already bought the wall scones for alcove wall, what would you do?

Comments (10)I used 4 similar sconces (Restoration Hardware Double Sutton) in my master and replaced the included incandescent light bulbs with round 40W LED bulbs because I was worried about heat and electricity usage. I'm very happy with the effect - cool, probably brighter though not as warm a glow. My contractor thought 3 sconces would have been enough, but I am happy with 4. I put in 2 75W LED can lights over the vanity, which though bright, cast facial shadows since they were located too far from the wall (10" vs. 4"- 6") - look a little ghoulish at 60+ years of age. We had above mirror makeup lights which I loved, so I would recommend horizontal above mirror lights for your situation. My RH medicine cabinets have 2 halogen lights, so sometimes I use just them to put on makeup, and they do run a little hot. I just don't put on makeup that often. And there is 1 general LED can light with diffuser in the vanity area. Comments (8)Golddust -Thanks for responding! The mirror is 56" across and the vanity is 60", so the mirror should be adequate coverage for each sink. You brought up a good point about the styles being different and after seeing them together on my computer screen alongside the vanity I think I prefer the lines of the medicine cabinet complimenting those of the vanity. I guess if I had a vanity with more curves and curvy legs then the mirror would look better (which is what I would have liked). I hadn't considered the Cartwright cabs in espresso until you just mentioned it. Threedgrad: Thanks. Comments (3)How funny. I could have written this. Same screw up except my vinyl bead runs as you described but on 24 inch centers over 1000 sq ft of a full wrap around porch. Unfortunately I have a rule that nothing gets redone before I complete some yet executed phases like the screen porch, finished basement, etc etc. so I am stuck looking at it for now and explaining it to everyone who comes to see the house. You will want to rehang the short way. By going the long way you can't allow for the vinyl thermal expansion and contraction which contributes to your (& my!) sag. It gets very hot between you dark shingles and that porch ceiling. You may want to consider nailing up a radiant barrier before the plywood goes up and adding some venting. Or consider since you're nailing up plywood just get the painted beadboard plywood and be done with the vinyl. You can skip the venting in that case. As to the recessed lights, I have them as well (wired with romex which will be fine as it is protected under the roof) I centered mine between my posts which are about 8 feet apart. The result is nice "pools of light" at night. I would suggest you include the one in the center and then use lower wattage bulbs in the coach light as accents. That's what I did....See Moremclarke

9 years agoGrrr can't wait to be done with the lighting. I think what I'll do is first hang the sconces and determine "bulb" types and if its enough light before figuring out the over mirror ceiling lights. I will get the recessed center light, saw a cool recessed square on amazon. Have to think about that. On a good note...I'm in love with this light for over my tub.
Edited to add: I wonder if this would look stupid hung in a semi flush fashion?
