Granite crack vs fissure

Seeing as the "my granite cracked" post was just mentioned again, I thought I would ask (after reading it - again) about fissures versus cracks. We had Uba Tuba installed about a month ago. Since installation, there are some very fine fissure lines in one area. They haven't gotten any worse over the month, and to me, don't seem a big deal (a natural occurence), but my husband isn't so sure about them. When wiping the counter down, the cloth doesn't catch on it and even a quick slide of your hand you don't feel it. But, when you gently slide your fingernail along the counter perpendicular to the fissure, you can feel the tiniest lip. Is this something I should have repaired? Will it get worse? Thank you!

Unfortunately, I don't know....bumping this up in case one of our resident experts (or anyone who knows) will see it and answer.

Your installer broke your top and did a poor repair. Crack/fissure doesn't really matter, however, your satisfaction does. Is it broken in the front as well? This is inexcusable these days with the transport technology available. Hopefully, you're sitting on final payment.

When I blew the picture up, in my opinion that is a natural fissure (crack) and not man made. I do agree with you that the installers should have caulked the area between the underside of the countertops and the cabinets. Its been my experience that the fabricator is looking more at the top versus the edge when laying out the counters because there is more exposed surface there.

I am by no means an expert but this looks like Delicatus which is what I have in my kitchen. I can tell you it has not been babied, and I do have an overhang. I regularly find my friends and family leaning heavily on the overhang and in several years I don’t have a chip, a stain or a crack anywhere in the whole kitchen. I can see several spots where I believe there was filler and repairs prior to install, possibly done prior to it even reaching my fabricator. I think that’s normal. But that’s it. So I would be really upset if this was me. Having said that, my installer did SUCH a good job on the seams that they’re hard to see even though I know where they are. So I’m sure this can be repaired to the point that it’s barely noticeable.

Just from the photo, it looks like a crack. While fissures can look like cracks, your line is fairly straight, and it is not aligning naturally along and around the mineral deposits the way a fissure would.

I am really surprised that no one has jumped on this thread.

The truth is (and please donÃ¯Â¿Â½t take this the wrong way) if you have to gently run your finger across a Verde Bahia (Uba Tuba) countertop to feel a fissure chances are you have a well resined slab. Uba Tuba is notorious for fissures; however, when treated with polyester or epoxy binders during slab manufacturing the fissure are filled and fused together, and then of course the resins are ground off during the polishing process leaving a smooth natural stone finish that we all have come accustom to. So my suggestion to you is, if itÃ¯Â¿Â½s the feel that bothers you there is not much you can do short of having the guy come back and TRY and fix it. Regardless of what most people say face polishing is still an art, not everyone that knows how to carry in these massive countertops are proficient in restoration of natural stone. If the fissures are visibly noticeable, a color enhancer may do the trick. Before you go out and buy a bag full of chemicals try soaking the area with water to see if the color of the fissures changes. You can do this by leaving a wet towel on the countertop for an hour or so. If water darkens the fissure you may have success with a permanent color enhancer. A few years back working for one of the big box retailers we used color enhancers to hide fissures, excessive pitting etc.... Since then more and more stones are treated with resin so the fissure and pitting issues have drop significantly. I hope this answers you questions.
