suggestions for good little normal under cab range vent

I'm still looking for a reasonably priced ducted vent hood for over my stove and was hoping for some suggestions. Initially, I was totally opposed to halogen lights in it cause I really don't want the extra heat but if I have to have them in order to get one that fits the space and works, I will do it.

My main concerns are that it actually works....doesn't have to be super duper, but I make pastas and soups (steam) and I saute a lot and sometimes pan fry (grease), that it is quiet enough that I will actually use it, and that it isn't too big. My old one is 7 inches tall and 18 deep and I'd like it to be no bigger than that, if possible. Many of the newer ones seem to be 20 or 21 inches deep and I really think the extra inches would bug me.

I hope someone has the same sort of hood and can tell me what it is. When I search online, I just get overwhelmed at the choices and can't pick. please help!

Sorry, can't help w/a shallow hood. But, you should know that the extra depth is needed to increase the capture area. If you have only an 18" deep hood, then you won't have the hood over the front burners...it will stop 6" before the front of the range. 24" is actually even better...especially if you plan to do your sauteing on the front burners. I suspect you won't find a good hood that's only 18" deep...but, I could be wrong.

How well did your old one work? If you think it worked fine (i.e., captured smoke/steam/etc from the front burners), then why not just get the same one again (or reuse the old one)? If you don't think it worked well...maybe part of the reason is the 18" depth...

It actually works fine (maybe not as perfect as a bigger one but enough for my needs) but it is SCREAMING loud and the wrong color. I know that shorter will mean less coverage, but my cabs are low and a larger hood would really be in my face. If I could find one that works as well as this one did with maybe half the noise, I'd love it. It's an old ge delux 30.

Plumbing lines, uncapped electrical wires (i.e., freely hanging), vent ducting opposite what you imagined, to name a few. Until you get that soffit down (a little at a time rather than a plunge), you won't know what's up. I'd hope you at least have some friend with you when doing this to help out. How big is your current vent hood duct aperture? That may help you a little-it's sometimes easier to re-route or re-place a 6" round than a bigger 10". Good luck.

It IS frustrating! Drove me nuts till I fired my builder and took over building myself. When you have a cost-plus contract, it seems to me to be totally contrary to the contract for the builder to tack ANY additional amount on to the price his subs charge him. Your agreement was to pay his costs PLUS a percentage of that amount to him as profit. You did not agree to pay his costs plus some undetermined amount that HE tacks on (a hidden profit) PLUS a percentage of both those amounts as his profit. And, if you have a fixed price contract with allowances for certain items, you should be able to spend up to that amount where ever you want to purchase the items covered by the allowance. If you go over you pay the extra. If you come in under the allowance amount, you should at least be able to apply the extra to some other allowance item. The only possible case where I think materials subs might have a reason not to provide you with the cost of the items you're interested in is if your contract is a fixed fee without allowances and your builder has told you "go in an choose from among the options that I have pre-approved." In that case, you don't really have much selection but the builder needs to make sure that there is SOMETHING available that will meet the requirements of the contract. (i.e., at least ONE kitchen faucet is available - whether you like it or not is beside the point.) What I found is that, once I was GC-ing my own build, I didn't have any problems getting prices. And nobody asked me to prove that I was the GC. Until I was ready to buy, they didn't even require me to have a "business account." So, next time, try going in and tell the subs you are GC-ing a home for yourself and you want to price options. Do not mention your builder's name. Tell them that for estimation purposes, a "straight" price without any "builder-promo" deal is fine because you're not going to be ready to build for another couple of months so that will give you a cushion in case prices go up in the meantime. Lay you odds that you'll get the info you want. That will at least give you some idea of which choices are the more expensive ones and which ones are likely to be within your budget. You can stop wasting your time looking at anything that is more than 20% or more above your budget. Then, once you've picked out things you like, you can ask if they give builders a promo-deal and what you would need to do to qualify. Once you have that info, you'll have a pretty good idea of what the cost to your builder is. Walk away with all the info you need on what you want and give that to your builder to order from. And, for allowance items, YOU SHOULD RECEIVE A COPY OF THE INVOICE for the items purchased. Ask the builder to have the supplier send a copy directly to you. He may balk but point out to him that there is no other way you can know how much over or under the allowance you went and that, as a businessman, he should understand that you have to have documentation for your expenses just as he does.

I hear a lot of the same comments, especially about Ikea cabs, Corian counters, lavender walls, not using tile or wood for the floors, our vintage stove, not all appliances being the same color, etc... Luckily, only 1 person was rude enough to say so after seeing the project in its 90% finished state (dh's uncle, grrrr). Everyone else has had the decency to at least find something they liked (usually more than one thing) and keep any negative thoughts from being spoken. Just as I never would tell someone their baby is ugly, I would not expect someone to say something like that about our reno if they knew we had just chosen everything and put a lot of effort into it. I am at the point of my life that if someone likes what I do, that is wonderful but not a necessity. Our immediate family needs to enjoy it because we live here. The kids are free to express their opinions, but unless or until they pay all the bills, they don't get an actual vote. I used to worry so much more about what people thought of me and of my stuff. I learned that they are more focused on their own lives and my real friends are happy for me if I am happy (as I am for them). I love seeing someone get excited about the changes, but even if they didn't, who is to say I'd want my house to look like theirs. Our friends all have lovely homes done in differing styles, but the one naysayer (dh's uncle) rents a house and has not invited us inside...hmmmmm.... I may not have decorated as our friends did, but that does not mean I can't appreciate that they did nice jobs of it. I think that if one person is happy, that is contagious, so people we know seem enthusiastic about our house now. They all would try to be polite prior to the reno, but now there is real appreciation instead of just trying to make me feel better about the ugly house we bought, lol..... I think you need to discuss and listen to dh's opinion on things and then do what works for the both of you (with the person who cooks and does the research for the new kitchen having a stronger vote). My dh had some opinions about things so I incorporated them into the plan. He did not care about most other stuff and let me get what made me happy. I'd run choices by him, but mostly he either agreed or said he'd go with whichever one I preferred because the choices I showed him all worked. It was important that he have some input, so I deferred whenever possible. This way, it is our house/vision and not just mine. That said, your guy sounds like he trusts you, so as said before, stop asking ;)

I just got a 2.0 rating from a customer out of a possible 5 with a note that I "was not very neat." Before I would begin this job, I informed the customer that I had no way of preventing removed pool grout from falling into the pool. Since he did not want the expense to drain and refill his pool, he assured me repeatedly that he had state-of-the-art pool filtration and that the sunken grout would be no problem whatsoever. I hosed off his pool deck at completion; he made no complaints, was very pleased, and paid in full. What the hell else could I do? Write the warning in the blood of his first born male child? Print it on his forehead? I told him what would happen, he told me not to worry, it happened just as I predicted and he wants to second-guess. Arrruuuggggg!!!

Zephyr Tamburo. Very contemporary looking so won't work for every kitchen. 19.5'' deep, 6.75'' high, 400 CFM, max. 5 sones, approx $500 for 30'' wide.

Vent-A-Hood makes a 6" tall unit that works very well. It's a bit more expensive than the ones you can buy at your local home center, but it works well and is quiet. It has halogen lighting with two settings. On the lower light setting very little heat is generated, but it still provides plenty of illumination.

Jessie, I have the Zephyr Tamburo hood in my kitchen. We chose it because we have a corner stove, and this was the only hood that would allow the adjacent cabinets to open. I am a little disappointed with its performance, though. It does not suck up a lot of the steam from my cooking.

Here is a picture of our kitchen during the cabinet installation phase.

Jessie, I'll bet your hood has a fan motor with propellor blades. Centrifuge squirrel cage motors are quieter. I'll bet your duct size is 6" diameter. Coming out of the vent housing it is probably 3.5" by 10" (which then converts to 6" round).

You need to know the size of the duct before yo can buy another one.

thanks everyone, but the Zephyr and vent a hood are a bit expensive for what I have in mind. david, good to know! do i have to take it apart to find out?

Depending on your vent size, look on ebay for some deals on the VAH 30" hoods. Your local craigslist may also be helpful. What is your budget for a hood?

I have had the Tamburo for four years. Having previously had a OTR MW, I love the hood. I think it work extremely well and is relatively quiet. My only issue is that mine was installed too low (only 24" above my flat top stove) and it does stick out far -- so it is easy to bump your head on it.

If I had to do it all over again I'd just get a hood without a cabinet above it. The cabinet above it was expensive (just like all the other cabinets) and fairly useless and hard to get to.

Another zote for the Zephyr Tamburo. I wanted a bigger, chimney style, but my SO didn't want to give up the cabinet over the range.

Although a compromise has been described as a solution in which neither party gets what they want, we are both (for the most part) happy with this one.

And we tend to saute over HIGH heat a lot.
