A couple of pictures would go a long ways toward helping us understand the issue. Is it possible you could post one?

Here is the backsplash with the moldings in rye and mushroom. The paint chip is Behr Classic Taupe, love the color but would like a little more color saturation. The granite is our old counter, we are planning on something along the lines of Star Beach for granite.

I think putting another color in there could be tricky. Maybe choose one from the lovely backsplash? I agree with your family that the Cookie Crumb could work, maybe you could lean a piece of that mushroom molding against the wall for a while and see how you like the combination?

Love your cabinets and their colors. In the picture the Behr Classic Taupe seems very similar to the Mushroom. Is that true in real life? I like that look as is can be very soothing but when reading your post it seemed like you wanted more contrast?
I think the Cookie Crumb is a little too gold for me maybe work with it as a starting hue and bring it a little more into line with your backsplash.
I used chip it on the picture of your cabinets and got these results but I think the existing counter played a role

Thank you both, the decision has been made, primer is going on as I type. I ended up choosing Valspar Holmes Cream, part of the National Trust for Historic Preservation collection. It is exactly what I had in mind, several shades darker than the hood, leaning a little towards the golden tan of the SW Cookie Crumb. When I hold the chip up to the Cookie Crumb wall, it appears just a couple of shades lighter, so it matches perfectly.

One step forward, two steps back though, I have nixed the combination of Star Beach granite and the multi glass backsplash. Looking at them together, there is just way too much going on and they are competing for attention. As much as I love the backsplash, we have decided we prefer the granite, so I am now looking for a simple, classic design for the backsplash. I haven't given up completely on the multi glass backsplash, I may use it in my son's new kitchen, which I am also remodeling! Thanks again for your replies!

Good call, fishymom. I liked the b/s tile, but agree it may have been a little busy with a granite counter. How fun for you to do two kitchens at once!

Thanks, the hood will be installed tomorrow, I will take pictures of the wall color when they are done. I think I am more excited for my son's kitchen remodel than ours, he closes on his first home on Jan.15th! For his redo, he is putting Acacia wood floors in the common areas, switching out his short wall cabinets with the tall ones from our old kitchen, staining them darker and adding a backsplash. We are also building a banquette with bookcase room divider in the dining area, which I would absolutely love to have in my own home. I will post for advice on his kitchen when I get up there next week!

As promised, here is a photo of the hood on the freshly painted wall. The flash is making the paint color look much lighter than the hallway paint, in real life the two colors are very similar. The kitchen wall is a little lighter, with a touch less gold tones than the paint in the hallway.
