Does this message board backsplash look weird to you?

My cabinets are being installed right now and we absolutely love them. However, there is one part that is just looking "off" to me. First off, our perimeter cabinets are white, and out island is a medium glazed stained maple. Our message center is white to match the white cabinets and the wood countertop matches the island. However, look at this pic and tell me if you think the backsplash looks weird to you? Should it just be painted white? Is my cabinet guy going to kill me if I ask him how we can possibly change this? He has been so fantastic to work with so I hate to ask for a change, but everytime I look at it I wonder....

Oh, and the top cabinets are going to have inset doors on them, and the lowers will have 3 drawers on each side.

Any other creative ideas for that backsplash?

Nope. I think you need doors, hardware, a phone, keys, a wooly hat and junkmail. I think it's pretty.

If it still looks off to you when you're all done you can paint it then.

I'm not seeing a current picture witht he sink -- just the one with the paper down on the wood which I understand to be before use. That wall looks like it has a raw end of drywall, not a side that is finished (paper or whatever) or maybe even no drywall. It looks like they tried to smooth joint compound in there, either by itself over your studs and built up or over something less than a full side of finished drywall. Joint compound will turn to mud (that's what they call it when it's wet -- hence the verb to "mud" the walls) and dissolve away if it gets wet. Paint will only seal the surface, and if water gets behind it -- well, I dare say it is probably worse than damp sheetrock, which is worse than damp green board. You say they had to sheer away your window sill. Did that sill come below the window too? I don't think you've got clean drywall there. I think you've got a really poor job of mudding and an even worse job of sealing the joint. That's my guess.

Thanks for the replies. Palimpsest, I didn't write this in my original post, the space below the upper cabinets fits *exactly* 6 rows of tile. So if I put corner bullnose on that corner, the finished edge on the top would extend under the cabinets. Then there would be a bunch of normal field tile next to it without the bullnose edge, which might look weird. Anyway, I think I've just decided to line it up with the cabinets and be done with it (thanks for the encouragement Lake_Girl and Mary11). It'll still line up with the top and bottom cabinets (just not the counter), which I think would look fine. Plus, that outside corner takes some abuse because of where it is, and keeping the backsplash an inch in from it will help prevent the tiles from knocking loose. Thanks again for the responses.

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

HELP - Grout looks weird on glass tile backsplash

It's hard to see from your photos the color issue you are having. If the grout job was sloppy, you should contact the installer for a warranty claim on the work. Did you discuss the type and color of grout with the installer prior to the work being done? We recently had a large tile job done, and we were given the opportunity to select the type and color of grout ahead of installation. I've researched before the possibility of putting new grout over old in a fireplace brick area, but I would think that would be harder to do on a backsplash where you don't have much if any extra room for a new layer of grout. Glass tile is a product all its own that requires special handling during installation, so it could be the installer may not have been familiar with the special requirements of glass tile.

I think it looks beautiful - warm and inviting, too.

Could you possibly be over-thinking this? (Kind of reminds me of looking at a word you KNOW how to spell, but staring at it so long, it looks wrong?)

Trust me, I overthink everything, so I feel qualified to ask.

Beautiful kitchen. Would love to see more pics. The one you posted is just a teaser!

I love it, but then I love stained wood. Without doors and decor the wood dominates, but just wait. It will look warm and beautiful when everything is complete!

I LOVE the color of that wood and wood countertops are my favorite:)

I think it's beautiful, too, but I would like it even better if the small openings right above it had dark rattan baskets in them instead of doors. I think that would make the transition from the stained wood to the painted part smoother.

Oh, you guys are all so awesome! It actually is growing on me. A few comments on your comments....

Suzi - who me, overanalyze? Um, you've hit the nail on the head my dear. Trust me, I am an expert at that! I just mulled over the exact choice of outlet covers for a good part of today!

holligator - the 4 "cubbies" are indeed going to be open immediately above the backsplash. I LOVE your idea about rattan baskets. Originally I was thinking some fun splash of color, but I think the rattan may tie it all together.

owls4me - thanks for the great compliment! I'm glad it gave you a bit of inspiration. I feel like I'm only using other people's inpsiration and ideas on this board and feel like I never really contribute, so am happy to have contributed to someone ;)

I'm posting more pics of my somewhat installed cabinets/island on a separate thread. Now....what granite to choose! I'm leaning toward colonial dream or golden beach but am open to suggestions!
