I did it in my kitchen because I thought about it and liked the way shiny chrome sparkles at the sink in front of the window, but my prep faucet was going on a dark counter and I didn't want it so shiny -- I wanted it to look older. My cabinet hardware is all brushed or matte. I think it is fine as long as you have a reason for the change and don't just look like you ran out of something or didn't notice the difference. I think a frame on the wall is significantly different enough from a metal faucet to be different. Add another frame on a print, a wastebasket or other details in brushed silver tones and it will look fine.

Thanks for all the feedback! We're mixing finishes throughout the house, but I'm worried about mixing finishes in a small space like the bathroom. I decided to change my faucets (Kohler Margaux) to polished nickel bc the sconce we chose only comes in polished nickel (Robert Abbey Jonathan Adler Parker sconce). (Btw, if anybody has comments on that combo, feel free to chime in. I'm struggling with that bathroom). I generally lean toward brushed finishes bc I think it shows less finger prints and water marks, but I think that we could deal with it in that bathroom. Since the sconce and faucets are both such major focal points in the bathroom, and are within a 3 foot space of each other, I thought they should match. Interestingly though, the towel holder only comes in a brushed finish, but I decided I could live with that bc it's not a focal point and will generally be covered by a towel. With so much relating to this house, I guess all I can do is take a leap of faith and hope it will turn out looking the way I envisioned or at minimum not look like a wreck. Now I have to find a polished nickel mirror.... Thanks!

By mixed, do you mean in the same room? If so, I wouldn't combine them in the same room. Most of my house has antique brass (all hardware). Two bathrooms have chrome, one bathroom has antique brass and the mudroom has brushed nickel. Hardware matches within each room. Sometimes not a perfect match (e.g., in the kitchen the cabinet hardware is antique brass and the light fixtures are raw brass, they will look antiqued after they age) (e.g, in the mudroom the door hardware is brushed nickel but the schoolhouse light fixtures are polished nickel). Where a door has one side on the brass room and one side on the chrome room, the door knob matches both rooms. So, where the door swings into the bathroom, the hinges are chrome (hinges are the color of the in-swing side) and the inside knob is chrome but the outside knob is antique brass. Some people don't care about matching, but it is something that catches my eye. IMO, ORB doesn't match anything but ORB. Black hardware matches brushed chrome/nickel ok. And I think you can blend the cool metals (nickel, chrome) and the warm metals (brass shades) within their family. Emtek will makes knobs with a different color on each side.

I think it's a matter of personal preference and it's not wrong to mix them if the diffence in their "warmth" doesn't bother you. And I think that sconce would look amazing in polished nickel! I have a similar situation in my guest bath. We already had chrome faucets and I really wanted the lights in polished nickel. I have to admit, I would prefer my polished finishes to match because I worry that they are similar enough that it looks like I just couldn't quite get it right. I recognize that is my issue and that most people probably wouldn't pay as much attention. Here's a photo of one side of the double vanity. It's a pretty bright day out today so it's hard to get a photo to show the difference as it is IRL. We're finishing our 10 1/2 month masterbath reno this weekend and, after taking a month off to regroup, we're going to take on this bathroom next. It will be a much lower budget project and some of the same elements will stay... including probably my mismatched finishes!
