flat or semi-gloss for wood ceilings?
Comments (10)My kitchen ceilings get a scrub once a year. Before I started washing them, I used to repaint them about every other year. Maybe not necessary in a brand spanking new house, but mine is two centuries old, and has been heated with wood or coal for that duration. Clapboard and around window and door jambs leak coal dust and ash dust. You'd never notice it from day to day, but over a year you would. Spider webs, greasy film lain down by cooking and a gas grate in the hearth, and black soot from oil lamps during power failures. I just put a strong solution of soapy water (laundry power works amazingly well for this) in a paint pan, and get a big, fluffy paint roller and roll it along the ceiling....let it do its thing for about fifteen minutes (you can see the grime letting loose). Follow that with a sponge cloth I rinse out often in clear water and you gotcha the cleanest, brightest nicest smelling kitchen you want. I can't believe people don't address this in an old house. The kitchen brightens up like someone turned on a light or opened the curtains. I don't do this in every room, but by gummy my kitchen is the heart of this home and gets heavy use and I want it pleasant....See MorePainting furniture: semi-gloss? satin?
Comments (9)I don't know how, but obviously I missed this post. :) Hi Susan! I love primitives and I LOVE your tables. I wouldn't change them either. Even if they are repros, nobody else knows right? ha Is it really tall enough for a table?, because I swear it looks like what my g-ma used as a milking stool. It's wonderful. I love the way you painted your pin boxes. Very cute and something I'm sure GD will cherish. I will reinterate on the sealing. I just started using the Thompsons Waterseal in the spray can for outdoor things myself. Haven't used it long enough for a true test, but I use a clear acrylic spray sealer on every project I finish. You can buy it in glossy or matte. If you continue to paint please keep sharing your projects with us. We love anything painted. ~Anj...See MoreAnyone used semi-gloss paint on walls?
Comments (14)Well I'll be the odd ball out....I agree with your decorator and in fact, I use semi-gloss more often than I use eggshell. I don't do white...I find it boring, but I do like semi-gloss paint in colors. It adds a lovely texture to a room, hopefully one of many since a well designed room should include textures in all forms. My family room is done in a deep green on two walls, and the balance are parchment, all are done is semi-gloss. My library is done in a dep gold/butter (matched to a lion's mane) in semi again. The ceilings are both in different light tones, semi as well. Semi and Gloss have one negative, and that is that they show mistakes or wall imperfections more than a flatter tone would. But they're great walls for art, and do provide that reflective quality your designer mentioned. I do trim in gloss always, but it's evn more important in a room done in semi. Look at several design mags...semi is used quite often, and even the next step up, gloss is used in many homes, not just in the kitchen :)...See MoreBlack painted TV wall....eggshell? Semi-gloss? Comments (20)It was adhered with wallpaper paste. I don't know where he got the material, but it was not coarse like burlap bags, so I'm assuming a fabric store. It was a really dramatic look because it was well planned. Modern, original art in mostly bright colors, each lit with a ceiling-mounted spotlight. So at night, all the light in the room came from the artwork. Upstairs was the same burlap in the common spaces, but left natural....See Moresabjimata
