Just a quick note on progress Â no complaints here. In fact, we are both very happy with the counter fabricator and cabinet maker and will provide a plug for them. The counter fabricator installed the island today believing we wanted it for Thanksgiving. The balance of the counters will be done early next week. It took 8 people to bring in the top - it was $%^&* heavy . He was really proud of the work and wanted to be there when we saw it. It was fantastic. No waves, perfectly straight lines etc. He wants pictures of the kitchen when its done for his website. He said the quartz took about 2-3X the amount to cut and polish vs granite. Wish the pictures did justice to the island and cabinets. We installed cove and base mounding this weekend as well as the under counter lighting. Just need DW to lock on a backsplash, mural , and handles now (and the hood supplier to finish. Bought a new tool on this job that I will highly recommend: a micropinner. It will not split the wood and is so small, no need to putty. I bought it on the recommendation of the cabinet maker and am extremely happy with the results. "nails" are 23 gauge Â about the size of a small staple. If youÂre a DIY Â get one. Cabinet shop: www.customcraftcabinets in Newark Ca. High end shop and nice website. The counter person is a craftsman in Santa Cruz CA (I can provide his phone number if desired) and was recommended by the quartz supplier (Pietra Fino) in Hayward Ca.

Well, I wasn't planning to post again so soon, but, here I am with news to report. I had a massive thunderstorm with a marble sized hail and 6" of rain hit my place last night. The potted peppers got blown off the table, fell half out of their pots, and got hailed/rained on. The tomatoes...same thing, but, they didn't fare as well as the peppers. I tried poking the tops back into the dirt, but, I doubt they will make it. I lost a few 7-pot pods, but, only found two of them tonight when I had the camera. The larger potted peppers got blown to the side, but, didn't tip over or anything like that. Anyway, here are the pics. FYI........ All opinions expressed earlier about Kyocera's white-bladed line I still hold to. I like them. I've sent them all in another time ($10.00 for nine of them) and they were returned quickly as good as new. Excellent service. But I have several more years experience, now. On a lark, I also purchased one their top-of-the-line "Kyotop" 6-inch chef's knives for myself and several for gifts. This is the best they make and costs MANY times more than the white-bladed equivalent. They have a "Damascus" sort of pattern to the blade surface, dark ceramic blades, wood handles, and are promoted is being more durable than the lesser lines. After three months use, I am dismayed to say that they aren't more durable. The edge has degraded (micro-chips) at about the exact same rate as the less expensive lines. They look really neat and in-use perform wonderfully, just like the lesser lines but, clearly, there is no advantage in durability. What we're left with is small differences in configuration and large differences in appearance. I like this knife. It fits the hand wonderfully and is a pleasure to use. However, at the price, for me, I just don't see the value compared to Kyocera's lowest-priced lines. Performance and durability in my kitchen has shown to be exactly the same. At the same time, I've acquired several Japanese steel knives to replace my Henkels and Wusthofs. Have acquired Shun Classic, Shun Elite, Mac, and Tojiro of various types. The steel is harder and thinner than the European knives and in side-by-side comparisons of the same tasks outperform them rather spectacularly. Their 16-degree blade angle makes them incredibly sharp -- even sharper than the ceramics -- and their edges are still easy to maintain. I've found that their hard steel (Rockwell low 60's. Most European knives come in around mid-fifties) and sharpness make them superior even to the ceramics that, I had said previously, stood alone in my experience. I do like the Kyocera ceramics. And their re-sharpening service is exemplary. (I will certainly continue to use it.) Not taking anything back that I said. I just know more, now. If I knew a few years ago what I know now from experience, I would forgo the ceramics in favor of the Japanese steel blades.

Trish, Mutabilis was really too large for that spot, and with its back to the wall it mildewed quite often, and there was more and more dead wood underneath, with an increasingly thinner canopy of leaves and flowers on top. Some years ago I cut it back and cleaned up all the dead parts, but now I'm no longer able to handle that. I hope that with time Blush Noisette, Duchesse de Brabant and Aloha will put on a nice show, and three smaller roses seem easier to handle (I hope). Baronne Henriette de Snoy has beautiful foliage but is a slow grower for me with just one bud showing a little color, and I'm beginning to lose hope it will ever open. I'll talk about it next spring, assuming there's much to say. I'll be curious to see what your Madame Berkeley's final fate will be. It seems quite vigorous for you, and I would wait a while before you make a final decision. Sometimes tea roses can improve drastically. I've been told repeatedly that I don't have drip irrigation but rather what one Australian told me was spaghetti hoses. These are very thin hoses, cut to the length you need to reach each individual plant, which are inserted into the thick main hose. You get a tiny stream of water, and for big roses you would put in two or three for more even coverage. It was the simplest thing to put together and it seems to work fine. I hope the soaker hoses work for you; I know they do for other people.

how large is your island? i am planning one that will be 8' long, alomost 9' with the overhang on one end for a stool.

Teppy, the island is about 8.5 feet long and about 54" wide at the widest part of the overhang. The doors open to shelves for storage. We have another opening like the one you can see on end but it has a file cabinet under it. "We" are looking barstools now. the big question is "backs" or "no backs" Does anyone have problems with the backs hitting the counter top and damaging them>

LOve that counter! So, by quartz- is that the only name for it? There's not anything else?

We have backs on our bar stools, but they don't swivel, so no problem hitting the counter. We were talked out of swivel by the furniture dealers. Supposedly only the Chinese are making the swivel mechanism, and here in Canada, anyways, the Canadian manufacturers stay clear of it.

Raehelen: (Are you in the PNW?) Not sure what what that means Pacific Northwest? In any case the house is close to Monterey Calif. It sounds like swivels are not the way to go. Thanks

Lyno: the quartzite was called "white and gold". We wanted something that looked old and different.

Yup PNW, means Pacific Northwest. (Thought everyone knew that! :>) I live near Vancouver, and the Salmon River runs right by the end of my block - just thought cuz of the name, you might live in this neck of the woods! Forgive my ignorance, but do Salmon run near Monterey too?

That counter & the cabinet color are perfection together! That looks absolutely gorgeous. I love the shape of the island, also; very interesting and pretty.

Raehelen: Yes the Salmon run (or use to) here as well. They go into the San Francisco Bay and up the rivers. Unfortunately the season was eliminated this year due to low fish counts so it left weekends open and proved a good time to refurb the kitchen. I use to enjoy fishing on weekends - hence the name. The kitchen planning took quite a bit longer than I thought. The house we are doing this in is a vacation home and is where we plan to move in a few years....(longer if the stock market stays like this). When we finish the kitchen, it will be time for the decks, windows and master bathroom. If we do not have a fishing season again next year, they will get done then. If we do - then some day. priorities in life.

Absolutely beautiful counters!! I'm glad I didn't see your pics while I was installing my own counters. It would've made me think twice about my own choice!
