Do you use your prep sink or main/clean up sink more?
Comments (10)Our kitchen isn't done yet, but I can tell what I think will be the sink usage: I will use the prep sink probably 75% - 85% of the time My DH will use the cleanup/main sink 75% - 85% of the time...I cook, he cleans up (kids are usually doing homework b/c of our crazy schedule!) I have to admit though, that neither sink will face the wall...the main sink is in front of a window to the backyard; the prep sink is in the corner of the peninsula facing the DR. In our old kitchen, the only sink faced a wall and we didn't really have a problem with it. As with Lascatx, when I'm prepping I'm watching what I'm doing rather closely since it usually involves knives or peelers. My DH, OTOH, watches TV while he does dishes. The main reason we put the sink where it is is that I loved Fothia's bay window sink and wanted to do the same in my kitchen. The other reason is that I wanted a "real" vent over my cooktop but not in the window and (1) there wasn't enough room on either side of the window to give me decent work space on both sides if I put it on either side of the window, (2) I like the more balanced/symmetrical look of the cooktop centered on the wall, and (3) there wasn't enough counter room for both on the back wall (it's what I had before and hated it!)...See MoreDo you have a soap dispenser on your main and prep sinks??
Comments (19)I have one at the prep sink but not at the main sink. I have a Never Empty under the counter so I don't have the hassle of filling it through the hole on top of the sink. We put it at the prep sink because that sink is on the island and we prefer to have most of the island top open. A soap dispenser takes up less room than having a bottle on the counter there. It is really nice to have it always in the same place (not wandering around on the counter top) and near the faucet so that most of the area is always clear for use and I always know where to go to for it. Our prep sink is also near where people tend to enter the kitchen so it is the best location for washing hands before working in the kitchen and it is near the table for cleaning up our grand children's hands before or after eating. As someone mentioned above, it is convenient for washing hands immediately after handling items like raw meat since those are prepared at the prep sink. We didn't put one at the main sink. That has the filtered hot and cool water dispenser and the air gap so we didn't want one more item there. Also, it is near the corner of an L so that a bottle of dish soap next to it isn't in the way of anything. I like being able to pick up the bottle to squirt it in an item I'm working on no matter where in the sink the item is. For the way we use that sink a soap bottle is more convenient there than a soap dispenser....See MoreHow do you choose your island size? And prep sink location?
Comments (17)Thanks, all. There is a lot to consider here. We can't move into that dining room because it's a load-bearing wall, and our DR furniture is already cramped in there. Our table + end chairs just fits. All the designs so far were for a 24" cabinet for the prep sink, and one portion of our current double sink seemed like it would be roomy enough for our uses (our biggest colander fits, and it's around 18"). No garbage disposal, so we won't be doing prep directly into the sink. It will be for rinsing veggies, washing hands, and draining pots. I'll have to go see a 24" sink, though we had a 25" single bowl at the last house, which was small for our only sink, but seems like it would be too big as a "spare" sink. My husband still isn't completely convinced about the sink, so I haven't wanted to rock the boat on the sink size. He seems pretty set on ~18 inches. I'm having a hard time really envisioning that pantry wall, even after seeing elevations on the (various, now 4) designers' computers. I've gotten feedback that it would look "best" with deeper flanking tall cabs and recessed inner/counter portion (15-12-15), or "best" with the opposite, with the center/counter part jutting out a bit (13-15-13). Also that it might look bad if it was all the same depth across (either 12" or 13")....See MoreWhat do you store in your prep sink base?
Comments (15)We wanted a trash pull-out under our very deep main sink, but they are too tall. I don't know why, but I was comparing trash cans at the home center one day, and discovered that they sell a trash can that is identical, only a few inches shorter. I bought the Rev-A-Shelf pull-out, and the shorter plastic trash can. It clears by about 1/4"! Here's a before and after: Too tall: Just right: My other favorite storage hack is incorporating the toe kick into the bottom drawers to make use of the wasted space- We have 32 drawers in our small-medium kitchen, but there's never enough storage! I made this rolling bin on the outside of the peninsula to make use of the dead corner....See Morerhome410
