Please help me with my granite choice

Hi everyone,

I am new to the forum and wish that I had found you guys sooner!

We are building a new home and have chosen our cabinets. They are Newport Cherry Chocolate Glaze. A pic can be found here:

I plan to have stainless steel appliances,and a light-colored floor.

My preferences for granite:

1) I don't want a really dark or solid color granite.

2)I don't want white.

3) I would like to have movement, a busy or swirl pattern, something kind of striking but not too over-the-top.

I've been leaning toward something with gold in it, but would love to hear your ideas!

Please.....help me pick a nice granite that will match my cabinets. I am so new at this

the best thing to do is to take your door sample, and just go shopping. the granite yard people do this every day, multiple times a day. if you aren't sure between a few, then take a picture and post them here. But I think once you are at the granite store, something will speak to you!

My kitchen has similar colored cherry cabinets and I fell in love with a slab of typhoon bordeaux. It hasn't been installed yet so I don't have pictures but it looked amazing with my cherry cabs! Every slab is so different so you should really see one in person but I attached a link I googled for you.

I have a soapstone called Santa Barbara, which Florida Joshua used to have (don't know if he still does). It is a really interesting soapstone--almost all talc--very little veining. but incredibly compressed and dense. I have 2 sons--wild, active sons. Within 2 days of installing the stone, they were driving their matchbox cars over the runnels. One afternoon I heard, "clang, clang, clang, clang." I went in the kitchen and found my 3 year old banging a glass up and down on the runnels. They are fascinated by the runnels. A differnt day, my 3 year old had 2 spoons, and he was pretending they were people, marching them around the counter--ding, ding, ding, ding--went the spoons. But NONE of this is noticible. None! When it first happens, you see white marks (talc residue). Plain old water washes much of it away. But a dab of oil, and it is GONE. It seems like magic to me. I have this crack in my stone (working on a resolution), and I have played around with it: scrubbed it with green pads, gone at it with sandpaper (100 grit, 400 grit). It easy to work with! Truly! Add a bit of oil to the top, and it all looks the same. Now, I do think there is something special about the Santa Barbara. It seems to oxidize differently. Some stones need a lot of oil. My stone was oiled almost 3 weeks ago, and barely looks any different. I have to go at it with the scrubber or sand paper to get the dark color off (regular soap won't take it off, nor will scouring powder). So, I say all this to explain that soapstone (Santa Barbara, at least) is incredibly easy to maintain. I have some "patina photos" that I have to get downloaded. Basically, my husband was sanding plaster on the ceiling over the counter, and then--uh--standing on the plaster grit. The soapstone looked rather buffed. But add oil, good as new. Add fine sandpaper, even better. However: I haven't had a giant ding yet. I have dents. No big deal. Can't see them. But a big chunk out of the side of my runnels would be sad. I am just amazed by soapstone. It is just magic! Magic, I tell you!! I can totally see how folks devote their careers to the stuff! Francy

Thanks everyone - I think I'll go with the gray. cpang74 - the name of the granite is New Aran Blue. My stone fabricator says it's a "new" stone. Not sure what that means really but it's true I haven't seen it on a lot of websites. It's got a lot of the crystal like stuff that Azul Aran has but it's less than half the cost of that AND it fits my color scheme better - grays and browns vs. blue. sue_ct Thanks - I didn't realize that but it's ok. I just love it and I've been able to rationalize to myself that it's ok to pay over $600 for a faucet - and hey I just saved another $65 by changing my sink :)))) BTW you all are great. I've really been able to post only inquiries here as opposed to helping anyone. I have learned SO MUCH!!! So thanks and I'll definitely posting more questions and hopefully post some things that will help other people. Tracy

I love #1 and that cute little girl! Please post picture of your kitchen when the cabinets are installed since I want to see Polar White inset cabinets in another kitchen and not just the show room. I only saw one other poster with the Polar white. I still have not given up yet on the Shiloh Inset Cabinets that I love and if I can save enough for them, then I am not sure between the Polar White and the Soft White. In the showroom the Polar White seemed to be a touch darker than BM Cloud White. In pictures, it seems to white. I loved it in the show room.

Hi--When we redid our kitchen 2 years ago I had some of the same questions you do now. We have med-dark cherry cabinets & a small island. My husband wanted absolute black granite for the counters & I wanted a WOW. So we thought seriously about the WOW on the island. But the cost made us change our mind. We had to pay for a whole slab of the WOW even to use only a relatively small piece. In fact the cost was prohibitive. In retrospect I wondered how much the whole kitchen would have been in the WOW. We didn't price that, but in the long run it might not have been too bad considering we would have had to pay for a whole slab. So, just a thought. Check prices (if you are watching your budget) before you get your heart set on one certain thing. We tried looking for pieces of a WOW @ a local stone yard, but no luck.

Picking the granite is the fun part!! I echo what pence said, take a door with you to the granite yard and have at it!! LOL! Whoever ordered your cabinets can order a sample door for you. There are SO many different granites out there... have fun with it!

We are getting very similar cabinets with another line...called cherry chocolate glaze also and just chose Yellow River...and are in LOVE. I am sooo sooo happy....lots of deep veining...just beautiful. Check it out! (We are going to be painting some rooms grey, so chose slabs with a little more gray in them.)

My mother has typhoon bordeaux but it looks nothing like the pix above. Each slab is so different, her's is so delicate with no big splotches at all or huge contrast of colors, it's more of a weblike pattern. It is so stunning it will bring tears to your eyes, lol, no words to describe how gorgeous it is with her medium cherry cabinets.

Msvic- our cabinets are a deep chocolate brown with chocolate glaze...very little red but definitely NOT expresso....just a really beautiful chocolate cherry...The slabs we are getting have more gray...

We have Typhoon Bordeaux granite with cherry-looking cabinets (actually maple with a teak stain). I love the combination!
