The neighbor who sat on my granite countertop last Friday.....

is one lucky son of a gun!!!! Below are the after pictures from the repair. I have to say if I didn't know where the break was I would never have known about it. Thank you to oldryder & Trebuchet who gave me reassurance when I desperately needed it. It was greatly appreciated.

The installer did say there was a natural fissure at the corner which was the reason why it broke. If the fissure hadn't been there he said more than likely the corner wouldn't have broken off. But he did say no one should be sitting on granite counter tops regardless. Amen!

10 years now with stainless steel counters. Would not ever do any other. After a weekend with DD2's family, which includes 6,5 and 2, I can tell you it never entered my mind to be the slightest bit concerned. The baby was squatting on the counter barefoot, with his Dad holding him of course. Guests have finger painted on the counter and made all types of messes. Stainless can be wiped down with alcohol and completely disinfected in 2 minutes. I've also had white marble which I loved and which was gorgeous. But much more maintenance. I have an absolute black (super hard) granite in our laundry room and it's ok but I must be more careful with greasy things in there whereas in the kitchen I'm never concerned.

Thank you everyone, you are all the best! I Love Love them so much, every time I see the stone I get so excited. My husband thinks its so funny as he thinks its nice to but can't believe how truly excited I am, lol. He's like "It's just rock, I don't see it the way you do!" :) He just grins and shakes his head. Some just dont understand us kitchen obsessed, he he. Firsthouse, thank you for all your wonderful compliments. I am so ready to move in as its been a very long and extremely slow build, we are not in till the end of next month but things are all scheduled to move quickly now. Hardwood is being installed tomorrow, yay!!! Hi Lynn, The edge is I believe a regular ogee edge on the island, the fabricators just used numbers for their edge selections, it was #250. The perimeter edge is an eased edge. I read some where maybe on GW that sometimes if you do a fancier edge on the island, most people won't notice it's not done on all the counters in the kitchen. I also like the simpleness of it on the perimeters. Romy, Yes, we have backsplash! I thought long and hard and changed my mind so so many times. Backsplashes are the hardest thing to choose, aren't they? Lol In the end, we just went with simple. My husband the last time at the tile place just pointed to the tile and said he liked it, I was like "Really!?!?!" It was the first tile I considered months and months ago. I looked back at all my inspiration pics on Houzz and then noticed 90% had that same tile in them. White 3x6 beveled subway. I'm going to go in the next couple of days again to see the hardwood and by then the backsplash will be grouted, I'll take more pics. :)

First I am not a fabricator but have over 30 years experience as a home builder. A couple of comments on Granite. First in this forum like many granite is talked discussed as if it is a commodity - all granite tops are created equal. Granite is not like salt or soy beans. There are many grades of granite and the prices vary widely many with similar or even the same names. There are also many levels of fabricator from the sophisticated fabricator using computer operated cutting and polishing machines to the guy who will literally cut granite in your back yard. I was at a "shop" the other day where they were cutting granite with a hand saw on 2x4's in the parking lot. Many new fabricators were working for someone else and when the economy slowed they were laid off. These employees then went into business for themselves often without proper financing or even proper tools. The prices fell as these fabricators using lawn signs to advertise and working for wages and cutting corners: waxing edges instead of polishing, using mismatched remnants, dyeing granite to make it look more expensive, cheap uncertified give away sinks, and other tricks that do not show up until the check clears. Radon is pretty much a non issue but check it if you like. Do not buy from a fabricator unless you have seen the shop and the equipment they are using. If they have their own slab inventory it is a good sign that they are better off financially. Reverse look up the phone number. If it comes up a cell phone and they fabricator does not have an office look out. Many of these guys change numbers often to avoid warranty. Yes all granite should be sealed. Darker granite will hide the absorbed water but still needs to be sealed. Quartz, solid surface materials and even the composite sold by Granite Transformation have advantages and disadvantages. First they are more uniform because they are manufactured product. The is no such thing as a B or C grade quartz. These product do not have the veining and character as granite. granite counter-top seams ... are we being too picky?

These are my pics of my countertops placed Friday June 22, 2018. I cried looking at these seams. It looks so cheap. Fabricator explains that's the way it comes. I explained that I shouldn't be able to see the seams so clearly. It looks so unprofessional. They ended up taking them back to their warehouse. In hopes they say if it is quality control will try and fix it just to make it look better. Otherwise I will have to pay an additional fee for them to come out again to install. I just don't know what to do and if still looks the same. This is the first time I've replaced my counters in 24 years. I don't and can't live with it. looking at this for another 24 years. It looks so cheap and it really was not it's a lot of money to me. I hope fingers crossed that they will fix this problem. They never told me that there would be such seams. I thought the edges were done by a machine and it would be all one piece. I have read up on this and now understand there are seams. But now I do know that they should not look like this. If they are good fabricator you shouldn't be able to see them so clearly. I will find out next week what happens.

Now that I've got a minute to look at it without feeling so sorry that it broke, I can see that that granite is absolutely gorgeous. So glad things turned out well (and so quickly too).

Fabulous result. Like you, I was just sick seeing that broken corner, and couldn't have imagined it would be so totally invisible after repair. What an expert job! It cheers me up just to know that there are still such great craftspeople out there! SO glad for you, and thanks again for posting the follow-up.

Oh it came out so nice. Glad to see you were able to get the repair done so well. There's nothing like a broken counter(or even chips) to make you sick to your stomach.

He used a glue similar to super glue to attach the broken piece back. He said it's around 100x's stronger than super glue. Not sure what the other material is called that he used to fill in the gaps. It came in a variety of colors which he used to disguise where the crack was. He matched the colors of the granite perfectly.

I took a pic of my island so y'all could see my granite. It's 2 bookend slabs that match in the middle where the sink is. The broken corner was on the left end right above where the trash can pullout is. I was heartbroken last Friday thinking we'd have to replace the stone. Just so relieved it was a happy resolution.

Don't look too closely behind my island. It's really messy....hahaha!!

Nice fix! I was going to say you need to mention the company but I see someone already did.

Silly neighbor! I know it's hard to tell someone to get their derriere off your counter. I like to think Miss Manners would say, "Oh dear! That counter is somewhat fragile and I wouldn't want you to be hurt if it should break. Let me get you a chair!"

You can sit and stand on properly installed granite with the possible exception of sink rails. Proper installation creates the necessary strength in tension for sitting or standing.

If this was a fissure as diagnosed by the repairperson, the neighbor may be more victim than perpetrator. Better his butt knocking it loose than the hands of a child.
