Can DWs & wine fridges make good neighbors?

Hi there,

When we mapped out our kitchen, we sketched a dishwasher immediately to the left of our main sink, and a 24" wine cooler/refrigerator to the left of the dishwasher. So, the dishwasher and wine fridge would be immediate neighbors.

However, I suddenly just had a terrible feeling as I realized the dishwasher will emit heat during the wash cycle, which could really tire out the motor on the wine fridge if the wine fridge is constantly working to ward off the heat and maintain a cool temperature.

Or would it??

I think it's common to put a double wall-oven next to a full-sized fridge (??). So, maybe the heat of two appliances next to each other -- even a cooling appliance next to a heating appliance -- isn't an issue?

Anyone know?

I would suspect you would probably be OK.
To help make sure, you could insulate? We put insulation inside the cabinet with our oven as a sound barrier because I do not like the sound of oven fans. However, you might be able to use a similar thing next to the wine fridge side of the dishwasher.

Here's the info on the insulation I ordered:

You should probably install a cabinet end panel (3/4- 1 1/2")between them. This would help to dissipate the heat (if necessary), and provide support for the counter top.

Yes, you will need a minimum of a 3/4" solid vertical panel between the DW and fridge plus a ledger at the rear of the DW and a bit of blocking vertically on the back wall to attach the filler piece to. I'd also want a filler piece horizontally (the 3" front to back and the 3/4" dimension showing at the top towards the front) at the 34 1/2" cabinet height connecting the cabinet to the left of the DW with the filler piece. You've got to make it sturdy enough to carry the weight of the stone.

Haus Proud is right that the higher end Bosch models are supposed to be quieter, but I still think any Bosch would be a comparatively quiet choice, overall. We had a top of the line Bosch in our last house, but being an older model, it was not rated as quiet as the current higher end Bosches. We later added a top of the line Maytag. In the temporary housing we lived in while we built our house, we had a mid-range Frigidaire. Now, we actually have 2 of the 500 series Bosches. The Bosch dw's, like some other European brands, have a 2-pump motor system, which is quieter than the single-pump motor situation with American brands. Both the TOL Maytag and the Frigidaire were irritatingly audible from the next room. Our older TOL Bosch (about 49 or 50 dB, I think) was often opened in mid-cycle because we couldn't tell it was running. Our 2 current Bosches running at the same time are pretty quiet. We can hear them running for parts of the cycle, but they don't interfere with conversation or radio/TV like the Frigidaire and Maytag did...And I must add that we have yet to install their custom panels, which I'm sure will reduce any cycle noise quite a bit. I have some film in my fridge too.... In the meat drawer, I think. :) I'm not about to lay out the bucks for a digital camera that can compete optically with my old Nikon (I have a little digital snapshot camera for web images). :) Stooxie found a great example of what I was going to say. You can put wine bottles in there too. If you don't want to pay for individual cradles you can make them out of foil. :) Not as snobby looking as oak racks, but will do the job you want. If you really want the look of a proper wine fridge with the oak racks, just find one where they're removable. Or consider a dual zone drawer fridge. Not the glass door look, but gives you enough room for a box of red and a box of white. :) The dual zone wine fridges I've seen aren't tall enough in the white section for a box. Though...come to think of it, you could just get a regular wine fridge and take the wine out of the box. The box is for travel and stacking. Once you open it, you can just put the bladder in a pan on a shelf.

Adding a panel to the dishwasher would be the one thing I would change about our new kitchen. However, we had just purchased a really nice and expensive ASKO instainless steel when we moved in, so couldn't see replacing it. My reason is a little different, but might go along with your "period" kitchen. The reason is, the stainless steel right next to the apron sink, takes a little wow away from the sink. If it was only cabinetry, it would be a cleaner look and the Shaw sink would sing in all it's glory. However, when this dw dies, I will replace with fully integrated and have a door panel made to match my cabinets, no matter the cost. The frig is a frig and really large (42" SS) and I didn't feel the need to conceal it, it sits at the end of a cabinet run and is built in and looks just great. It isn't taking away from any other "feature" in the kitchen. By the way, I love the idea of the green-ish cabinets you described. They sound lovely and would be just that little bit different than the norm! I tend to like "a little different"! Good Luck!

I agree with robbcs3 - having 48" of unsupported counter-top might not be ideal - having a panel or box between the two appliances will kill two birds with one stone. Don't know what style you're going for, but you ought to be able to find some decorative way of camouflaging it (e.g. a fluted column)
