Where do you put your trash can?

I have a small kitchen...I saw a stainless trash can with a toe kick for sale and wondered if it would look right next to my island...I have a small pantry but there are shelves that I need going pretty much all the way down...so it can't fit in there...under my kitchen sink is not tall enough..I could put it in my laundry room which is 10 feet around the corner from my kitchen but would that be practical? Just wondering if any of you have trash cans right in your kitchen exposed or if there are any other solutions...

I have two --1/2 gal galvanized buckets for garbage as I am cooking since we have no disposal. I keep them at the different work stations and empty as needed. I also have a large white garbage can lined with a plastic bag for all the rest. It sits right out in the open as in a resturant. I have been working in my son's restaurant for 3 1/2 yrs. They have 5 gal buckets everywhere there is a work station. It is so practical and not "pretty". I am cooking and cooks make garbage. This is a working kitchen so I don't want my access to disposing of garbage to require steps on pedals or opening doors etc. Just MHO. Caroline

I have a SS garbage can with toe kick in kitchen (well, actually it's now in our temporary kitchen), but plan to switch to an attached to door under the sink model I saw at Lee Valley. I haven't bought it yet, but think it looks very functional- has a lid that automatically comes off when you open the cabinet door, and it can use the plastic bags that you get from the grocery store. I used to have a similar one in my old house, but can't remember why I no longer had one- think I hated lifting up the lid?

From the specs I think it will fit under my sink.

At the end of my refrig/pantry run I have a small section of countertop above a bank of drawers (about 21X24) where all the mail and other c**p get piled. Two of the drawers hold mailing and school supplies. The other two drawers are supposed to be for DH and me to store mail and other stuff that needs to be saved short term. Unfortunately DH's drawer remains empty while his pile on top grows ever larger. Heaven forbid he should have to open a drawer to get to something when he wants it. I have a three tier letter holder where bills, bank statements and that sort of thing are put until they get paid or whatever. From there they go directly to the file box that I keep in one of my kitchen cabinets. I wanted a filing cabinet in the kitchen, but it was one of the things that had to be scrapped due to lack of space. I wish DH could be a little neater/more organized, but as long as all the clutter stays on the one counter I guess I have to consider it a victory. In our previous kitchen there was so little counter space and his piles were so large, I had a space about 15"X24" to do prep work in. Totally Confused

With waste baskets and small recycling bin in every room, including halls. Baskets are collected and dumped into trash cans the day before trash collection eve (my task). That night DH hoists the trash cans in the front bucket of the tractor and carries them out the driveway to the public road where recycling and trash are stowed in their respective automatically tip-able containers required in our town. Kitchen waste works this way: Compostables: go directly in covered casserole (banana peel between meals) or open bowl on counter during meal prep or large pail during canning/freezing projects. End of the day everything is taken out behind the barn and dumped on the open compost pile. Every week (during non-freezing weather) I fork about in the pile and every other week I paw at it with the small back hoe or f/e loader bucket to aerate and add more materials (grass, chippings, manure, etc.) There's no such thing as too much compost here. Recyclable stuff (cans, bottles, paper, tinfoil, plastic food containers, cardboard): goes in large covered(we have pets and even washed containers excite their curiosity) waste basket in pantry. It is dumped, when full, into recycling bins in the barn, pending weekly trash night. (Much to the delight of raccoons and skunks who regularly "inspect" my recycling in order to ascertain if I am complying with the requirement that it be washed clean.) We have mixed stream recycling here, so no separating is required. Non compost, non-recyclable is broken into two areas: food-based grossities (meat scraps and bones, primairly) are kept in a plastic bag-lined, covered container in the freezer door. When bag is full it is tied closed and dumped in the trash can the night before pick up in the wee hours of the following morning. For other non-recyclable stuff: broken glass, light bulbs, bottle caps, food-soiled packaging (plastic wrapping over bacon, for example), etc., we keep a small covered trash step-can in the kitchen. When we do the kitchen it will migrate (I think) to a bin under the sink, accessible from both sides of the narrow (27") prep island. Or maybe I'll keep the can, but put it on rollers so it can be kicked around kitchen easily. Dunno, yet. It has to be covered, though. We keep covered trash cans outside (or in deep winter in the attached wood-storage room - this is an old farmhouse with that kind of space). The main amount (in volume and weight and stinkiness) of our trash is cat litter. We have ten cats so it's at least three twenty pound boxes per week of clumping litter, plus some Yesterday's News for the Finicky Ones. Litter box gleanings are carried out to trash can every day. (I can cheat in "normal" winters and avoid trudging out to the barn 3X/day with litter if I collect and hold it in a small trash can in the un-heated and thoroughly below-freezing wood room.) Trash is something that I've given a lot of thought to. Not sexy, but essential to a well-working kitchen and house, IMO. Family tradition in our house allows certain things like individual apple cores, peach pits and pistachio nut shells to be heaved out open windows into the gardens below if generated in rooms without compost containers. We have stainless steel now that came with our countertops, too. It replaced a white porcelain that I liked but it had a nick out of it right where you could see it. I'd like to have another cast iron one like I had in our cabin. It was grey speckled with one huge, deep side and a small side for the disposal. But the S/S price was a whole lot better--free. I use Barkeeper's Friend to clean it. Does a good job. We have a white wooden box with a lid in the kitchen for trash. It has a wooden thingie to hold a trash bag in place. I got it at Home Decorators and had to put it together but at least it doesn't look like a trash can. It has a small drawer in the bottom to hold bags. In the cabin I had a cabinet on the island that pulled out and had big double trash baskets for recycling. Cool! I've never had them, but I don't think I'd like S/S appliances--mainly because of fingerprints and if my husband lived at your house you'd understand why. Sigh!

Check out the recent "door mounted trash" thread. Zelmar posted pictures of hers which is actually mounted to the cabinet but also attached to the door, so that when you open the door, the can pulls out and another lever lifts the lid. It's genius!! There's an inner bin which lifts out. Scroll well down to find her first post on the subject, then scroll farther for the pictures and more info. We have had plenty of compost discussions, but threads do fall off.

I currently have a SS garbage can with a toe kick next to my island. I love it. It's nice to not have to touch anything to throw something away. If your hands are dirty because you just touched raw chicken or changed a dirty diaper (I currently have two kids in diapers), it's nice.

I'm still in the design phase of my remodel and I will have a pull-out garbage can built in to my new cabinetry. I would actually prefer to keep my large SS can but there would be no where to put it in my new kitchen.

I have a SS can with the pedal at the end of my island. My island overhangs 6" on each end anyway. So the can is under the overhang. Half the can is under and half is not. Behind the can there happens to be a support column anyway, so the can is not seen from the other side of the island. It is working out perfect for me. Its central to all my work stations.

Ditto on what jennyct said. I don't want to use my hands to get into the garbage.

I'm with most of the others. I've got a SS can with pedal. I don't like having the trash under the sink or in a cabinet because I usually have stuff in my hands and like to just open with my foot. Plus the hidden ones are usually smaller, and I prefer large (=less frequent changeouts and trips to the garbage can.) In our new kitchen, it will be at the end of an island and somewhat hidden from others viewing it.

Hmmm, I did not want to see it, but I did not want it to be under the sink as I also wanted plenty of space for the recyclables.

What I love is that I pull it toward me when I'm at the sink, or at the chopping block.

I had my cabinet maker make a cabinet for the trash. I like to drag it around the kitchen with me. When I'm cooking it's out. otherwise it's hidden. it's a tall kitchen trash can, looks short in the picture.

I designed the kitchen walls to have an open space at the end of one cabinet run, near the sink and prep. area, for my alltime favorite garbage can: metal with a step-on pedal. When working with something really messy I pile stuff in a bowl, on wax paper, or similar while working, then take the few steps away to the garbage can.

I'm afraid that garbage cans and recyclables under the sink, in open or closed containers, attract bugs. We live in a buggy climate and I don't use pesticides. Recyclables get piled in one area near the outside door and taken outside daily, sorted if needed.

We have one built into our under-island cabs, which works pretty well; I can just scoot the cooking mess right off the island into the pulled-out container. Previous house, we this we had a toe-pedal one under the island overhang, a "Simple Human" brand that we now keep in the garage and which still works well.
