Can I do Calacatta subways with Calacatta countertops?

...if I can find a good match?

It seems like the obvious answer would be yes, but it seems I more often see white ceramic subways with Calacatta/carrera and other white marble countertops.

Would I be violating some design rule that I'm unaware of?

To break it up a bit, I'm thinking of doing stainless steel countertops in one area--the alcove where the range is. This alcove will be surrounded by an arch that's the focal point of the kitchen, and it will be tiled with Calacatta subways. So that will be SS counters with Calacatta tiles.

The other section, though, will just be a U-shaped Calacatta countertop, where I'd like to also have a Calacatta subway tile backsplash.

What I found when considering this (albeit with Carrara) is that the marble that gets made into tiles is often a lot busier and "dirtier" than whats sold in slabs for counters. So they didn't look so good together. (I ended up using white subways with my carrara counters.)

I actually used Calacatta Gold mosaic tile in my bathroom, and although it's gorgeous, there is a very wide color variation, with a lot of imperfections, in the tile that you don't see in slabs.

I think if you searched carefully you could probably find the right slab/tile combo and if the rest of the kitchen were thoughtfully designed around them it might be great... but it's not as simple as it seems at first :)

Thanks, Stacey. You bring up really good points. I'm searching design mags and besides the white ceramic subways, I'm seeing a lot of slab granite backsplashes to match the countertop--maybe for the reasons you mention.

Will have to post pics and see what people think might work.

Hi Blondelle, I purchased from thebuilderdepot.com (same company as Builders Depot Direct - just an upgraded site apprently). I purchased their 12x12" Calacatta Gold before it even got to their warehouse. Here are the pictures of it - this is honed. It is excellent - probably the best I have seen. I am not sure how long they will be able to hold the $12.95SF price - I bought the whole pallet 360SF - I can sell this on for jobs at $25SF. Check the builderdepot.com and dekotile.com. I remember ordering samples from at least one of them and I think they were 2x4. I can't remember if they were polished or honed. I have Calacatta counters and thought of doing the Calacatta backsplash, but ended up with yellow ceramic tile. Somehow, the marble tile almost detracted from the beauty of the countertops.

The latest research suggests that sealing marble in a shower creates more issues than it prevents. Your tile professional should be aware of that, and the ongoing experiments. As well as the issues with using epoxy with natural stone. It’s very concerning hat you are posting here instead of working with him for answers to your questions. It suggests that he doesn’t know the answers, and thus is not quified to be doing your job. Further statements just confirm this. You might want to reread the specs on the Red Guard. More is NOT better. You are out of spec. And read the TCNA manual. Not following manufacturer’s installation instructions puts you outside of industry standards. Re vet any tile professional who would do that. Before you let him touch any of the rest. We just had our LG Muse installed today. We also have light gray cabinets. (They were cherry, spent the summer sanding, sanding, sanding.) The kitchen isn't done (still need to hang floating shelves and put some subway tile in.... but, I LOVE the quartz. It took me a long time to pick out this quartz, and in the end, I liked the brightness and the subtlety-- I don't feel like it will become dated looking. I don't think I got many close ups, but here is a pic I took after install.

It can most certainly be done successfully. Here is a kitchen with marble counters and subway tile from Artistic Tile. The kitchen was designed by Bilotta in NYC.
