recommendation for inexpensive granite in DC area

I have a rental and am thinking about replacing the laminate counters with an inexpensive granite (probably Uba Tuba or something light, maybe Azul Platino).

Even though I don't want to spend a fortune, I want a decent installation/fabrication. Does anybody have any recommendations for fabricator? Is something like 35.00 installed too good to be true? It's about 30 sqft, generously measured, just an L with a sink cut on one side and opening for a gas range on the other.

If you are looking to only spend $35. You should check Lowe's they always have specials. We used Dominion Granite in Ashburn. They only charge for the amount you use not the whole slab. At least they did 5 years ago.

Years ago I had to listen to the stoners gloat as to how they were killing the solid surface industry. Now granite is a replacement for plastic laminate. Revenge is sweet. Thanks.

We were recommended by our contractor to try Luck Stone and Marblex. Both were outrageously expensive with little selection. Luck had a few slabs in the yard. Their primary business is done from the 10 or 15 well known granites like Verde Butterfly and Uba Tuba. For those, we were quoted prices 3X what other dealers were quoting. We talked with Dominion Granite and Marble at a home show. They were super knowledgeable. One of the owners has grown up in the business and has relationships with suppliers all over the country. They sent me to several suppliers, but we found our slabs at Daltile in Chantilly. Dal was very professional and kind. They even let me "visit" my slabs every time I went to Costco (which is right across the street). They said they get that all the time and made me feel like I wasn't being weird at all. Dominion did a superior job on our countertops. The only seam that is visible is bookmatched and just looks really cool. The installers custom matched caulk or whatever it is they stick the seams together with so that the seams would blend in. Our granite has a large gold river running through it and they templated it so that it ran over the counters in the most beautiful fashion. They also never tried to upsell anything, in fact suggesting that I go with the less expensive eased edge over bullnose because it highlights the thickness of the tops better. Very professional all the way around. Oh, and they offer a lifetime warranty. Does it get any better? Here is a link that might be useful: Dominion Granite

I think Jacob is actually in Oxford, PA. But I think it is still just a couple hours from her, so it really isn't htat big of a deal. I know lots of people who would drive a couple hours to get what they wanted for their kitchen cabinets. It is not like it is something you would do everyday, afterall. Jumpilotmdm, I believe the OP said she was comparing American Woodmark to Jacob, not Woodmode. American Woodmark is a HD line that I would expect would be cheaper than Jacob's cabs. Although, I am not sure if these were really comparable as it appears that Jacob might have been including things that were not in the American Woodmark quote. In all fairness, quality can come from many sources, as does junk. I am sure their are people (Amish or English) who produce both. In my experience, I love dealing with the craftsman himself thoughout my process. That was something that a manufactured cab company couldn't give me.

Soapstone suppliers in DC metro area

I hope this thread's not too old to add to. I did some investigating today. I've only seen soapstone a few times but have read every thread on here. I visited Designer Surfaces and Grantops in Frederick today. Very interesting! Designer Surfaces had Green Mountain Original on display and gave me a quick quote based on a very rough drawing. I was told they had very little stock but were expecting more very soon. At Grantops, I was shown a few slabs outside that were very green, and flakey /crumbly. It seemed quartz-like to me, with white crystals mixed in? (I am not a geologist!) I was assured that is was soapstone, but it looked extremely different than the display and sample I saw at Designer Surfaces. It was marked (I think) "Savon Pierre" on the side. A google search shows that this may be Canadian, and good for carving? Very strange! I made a quick stop at Home Depot tonight as my son wanted some duct tape. I walked thru the kitchen area and noticed that they are selling this exact same soapstone (same name too). I asked the store associate ( a very, very young man) about it and he told me it was real soapstone, but you couldn't put it in a kitchen because it was extremely porous. He said it was great for bathroom vanities. Bizarre, don't you think? I also called Carapace last week and they said they only had "the green kind that nobody wants". Maybe he too was referring to this "Savon Pierre"?

We are using Norwood (they are in prince George's county). They came highly recommended and they also have many remnants on site. Bet you could get a deal. I'd give them a call and see.

And, yes, it's true in my area. This is for a relatively low-end rental. Laminate was quoted at 650.00 installed. So, unless I head over to IKEA and do a DIY job, granite isn't much more.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll check them out.

Anybody have experience with Stoneremnants by Euro Stone, near Dulles?

I'm in Baltimore and $35/sf is usually the fabrication charge added on to the slab cost. DC is generally more expensive than Baltimore. I was able to find uba tuba for $35/SF in a 40 foot package mininmum. Sounds like remnants may be the best way to go.30 SF is about half a slab but that does not give you any wiggle room for pattern matching.

check out Granite Works in Rockville. We haven't ordered yet, but our builder recommended them. Because they are the fabricator, we found their prices cheaper if you can buy something directly from their selection. We noticed a difference of $10-$15 for the same slab somewhere else.

I love Granite Grannies in Upper Marlboro (actually S. Bowie.) PG County, MD.
They do remnants, too, and I cannot say enough good things about them and their work.
