Your post reads like you are considering two options. If you refinish the floors (a lot of work and mess) they would have to be sanded, re-stained and re-sealed. A darker stain (as you mentioned) would look nice ... a mocha color or something with a warmer brownish hue. If this is your route ... I'd leave the window mouldings alone (which look like pine but I'm not sure). Matching stains on different woods is challenging but do-able. If you re-stain the floors, would you refinish the stairs too? The stringer looks like an oak veneer but the spindles and bannister look like solid oak. I see your challenge as you have about 3 or 4 wood stains going on. Are you going to keep those blinds? and the curtains? The blinds kinda look cool with the current floor (which is in very good shape by-the-way and I like it too -- as the poster above mentioned). Your plan should depend on what you DISLIKE the most and go from there. What I would do (DIYer that I am with a limited budget) is ... keep the floors as is. Paint the window mouldings your wall color selection. Remove the curtains, keep the blinds or change the blinds to be the new wall color. Paint the stair stringer cladding and the spindles your wall color -- keep the bannister as is. Bascially, get the wood floors and what elements of the stairs you want "woody" in a similar stain. Paint anything that doesn't fit that plan. You might want to try the Home Decorating Forum too.

Sarahbr, although I like your tile very much, for my master bath I'm looking for a darker almost black color. The more flooring stores I go to I'm learning bigger is what's in even in herringbone pattern, therefore I'm only finding 6x24 as the smallest porcelain floor tile. I may cave and just do that. I went to two more flooring stores today and they both have installed 6x24 herringbone in mid sized and small bathrooms. I saw Chip and Joanne just do a bathroom in herringbone pattern and the tiles look larger. Lol love their show!

Thanks to all who have commented. This is my first post and I am really impressed with the speediness and thoughtfulness of the replies. I am inclined to do as suggested by several of you (aktillery9, justerrilynn, daisychain01, aprilneverends, tuesday_2008) and start with painting the basic components that outline the family room. If the built-ins and fireplace carry the look as individual pieces of furniture, I'll leave them stained. As Linelle noted, this is "good" stained wood which will hopefully carry the look. If, as Ingrid suggests, that end of the room looks too patchy I'll go further with the transformation. I really like aprilneverends' idea to back the bookcase with inserts. I had wondered about painting the back or the bookcases, but your idea would give them some pop without committing to painting. So glad to get positive feedback on the french doors. I'm inclined to agree with artemis_ma to keep both sides the same...unpainted for now. I love the idea of the french pocket doors, Ipinkmountain, but a portion of the wall they would have to recess into is an exterior wall which isn't workable. I am also limiting my budget for this project since I'm still finishing up a renovation elsewhere in the house. I will definitely leave the windows in the sun room stained as is. I agree with comments that another wall color will freshen the look. So grateful to have the help thinking all this through. I also found many photos on Houzz with stained/painted combinations, so I've got some good examples of where it worked. This project probably won't be started for several months. I'll try to remember to post photos of the finished project. Any additional input is welcome!

Livewire, there’s a distinct difference between snarky and pointed. My note was intended to end the business relationship and was appropriate given the informal nature of our correspondence. My response to Jeff was to exhibit agreement with the price of the door while objecting to the price of the transom. Secondly, you’ve assumed the installer is represented in my post which he is not. Much like the business of buying a door, the business of installing the door had me circumvent the retailer and their installers. In that process alone I saved approximately $400-$600 not including some additional rot repairs that don’t exit. So although this leg work can certainly be over whelming, if it saves me money and Im happy with the result, I don’t mind if I’m taken as what the English would call “snarky”. However, there’s an English virtue “mind the pence and the pounds will take care of themselves”, I’m hoping this one suites me precisely.
