Here is a link (hopefully it works!) to a pic of our layout plan for our new kitchen. It is currently 10x14 and is bumping out approx 4 ft to become 14x14ish. We are also bumping out our dining room 6 ft and that space will become part of the kitchen, accommodating a 4x4 corner pantry and 6x6 island.

We've already had lots of mishaps and stalling with the architecture/engineering process over the last 6 months, but work has finally began and footings are being poured this week. :)

Still up in the air:
Cooking- DH would like double ovens in either the NXR 48" range or a 36" cooktop with double wall ovens. I am open to a 36" range with the Breville Smart Oven to supplement.

Location of dishwasher- right or left of the sink? On the right it will bump up against a corner cabinet.

Important to us:
Seating for 5 kids at the island.
Large walkways and work areas for multiple cooks.
Light from window and slider.
Storage for canning and cooking supplies.
Coffee prep area.
Stand alone freezer and fridge from Frigidaire.

Most of us have been through this decision! It really isn't so much the outside measurements as it is the inside layout that will help determine if the fridge is a good fit for you. The different brands really are not laid out the same. I took measurements and some dishes that I normally use in m fridge to check them out.... I would have purchased a fridge that would not have worked well for me if I hadn't. The GE CD has very shallow and narrow veggie drawers and did not hold a stalk of celery. Some of the others do not have an adjustable shelf to make room for very tall items. The deli drawers on some are split, making them very small. There are some with ice in the door and some with ice in the fridge compartment. Your smart to go looking, but take a few items with you and be sure to take your own measurements.

Wish I could draw it and show you the changes but here's an idea that popped into my mind... Let's start at the door leading to the deck. When you come in immediately you will see a door to your left which will be the half bath...on the right where you have the radiator and the dining room door there will be a mudroom/cubby section...just a small bench and hooks/cubbies for all those things you need a place to store...so essentially we have closed the dining room door off and moved the "kitchen wall" out the depth necessary to accomodate the half bath...just a pedestal sink and toilet. So when you come in the back door you will see the bathroom door on left, mud area on right and a framed opening leading to the kitchen. Take out those windows! Say goodbye. Open up the entire wall of the dining room which will hopefully have it's own window and allow natural light to come in. Use the new wall you've created by bumping out for half bath and use that space for cabinetry as well as the space where the windows used to be. Put a 74" island or as big as you can fit...you can store your dishwasher/sink and drawers as well as having an arched bar overhang for additional breakfast eating. This portion can hang over into the dining room if need be...use the dining room as your main area now for eating and have an open concept. Have a wide enough opening for the dining room to make it around the island (42 inches usually) but still leave enough wall to put your fridge on that side wall or double ovens or a floor to ceiling pantry...for that you only need 26 inches plus room for trim on your cased opening... Put in 6 recessed cans with 2 pendant lights over your island and you'll never miss those two windows... HTH! Tara

Perhaps I should start over with a new post. Maybe I will. But to answer your question Rhome - Here is my existing kitchen and the surrounding rooms. I'll work on drawing a more clear layout on graph paper with all dimensions and dark lines. Basically, the remodel must include a keeping room, island, breakfast room, cubbies (like you'd see in a mudroom), a desk and all the regular appliances. So, what would you do to make this work? Janet, Rhome, Blfenton - I don't bake much but currently this is where I already bake. For the most part, I get everything I need from the fridge before I start. Baking will probably also happen on the island but the cabinets in the corner would "store" the baking stuff. Blfenton - "BK" is supposed to be "Bookcase" but apparently I was tired last night when I added it. I would thinking about doing storage on the back side of the island but am not going to do it. In all honesty, I probably just need to make the addition another foot or two but then it is even longer and puts more distance from the fridge and the existing part of the kitchen. The fridge is where it is so it doesn't block traffic flow and it close to the island, cook area, prep area, k.table and still accessible to "outsiders" not working in the kitchen - but yes, it is VERY far from the other side of the kitchen, dbl ovens especially. But does that matter? Believe it or not, I have thought through a lot of different options (like having the desk in the keeping room but then I can't have cubbies, and it's far from the kitchen table - which I need b/c of little ones) but it is a tricky space - long and narrow. I appreciate all your comments though and certainly need "fresh eyes" to make it the best it can be. Off to prep dinner. I will check back in later tonight after the kids are in bed!

What is the flooring in the rest of the house? Do you have original floors? I have a 1910 craftsman kit home and my floors are original. If I didn't have the hardwoods I would do LVT slate.

With counter overhangs, unless already taken into account, those aisle widths will become 34" wide and with 5 kids plus adults will be way too narrow.

A 6x6 island will be difficult to clean the middle, and will definately require a seam in the counter. Why do you need to seat 5 when the table isn't even in raise your voice distance from the island. One or the other is redundant, especially so if there is also a DR not being shown.

60'' is way too much space between the island and range. I'd prefer to separate the fridge and freezer to bookend the counter space in between them. It's more functional, and with the addition of a MW in a base or upper between them, it creates the perfect snack zone.

I am accounting for the counter overhang for a full 36, but it's interesting that you say 42. What we've had up to now is 30ish so I thought I was being generous, lol! I may see if I can work that in! Thanks!!

I would move the dining table closer to the sliding doors and move the pantry to the back corner.

I really think 5 feet between the range and island is too wide. I would not go more than 4 feet.

What do you intend to put on the wall across from the range?

Maybe a narrower but longer island. I'd switch the table and pantry. Can you put windows on the wall in addition to or move the sliders so the table can set in front of them?

The rest of the dining room doesn't show up on my drawing. It goes back another several feet and has bookshelves on the other end of the table. It is more of a homeschool room right now. We want the additional eating space at the island for parties and so that we don't have to pack up the school work constantly for the kids to eat. :)

A narrower island is a good idea. I didn't think about how hard to clean it might be. And that would solve the walkway issue.

Swap the fridge and freezer and split them. The fridge will get more use and by reversing them you'll get it out of your cooking zone and closer to prep. Split them, one on each end and the middle will be snack zone.

This is a pic of the downstairs layout of the whole house. I'm afraid it might be blurry, but it will hopefully give a better idea of where the kitchen is/will be in relation to everything else.
