follow my renovation- Day 1 (lots of picts)

Here it is. Our kitchen renovation started this monday and it is a mess. Please be patient, this is the first time i am trying to incorporate pictures.

We are installing medallian cabinets, tan brown granite, floor tiles, and new appliances. No idea on the backsplash and paint color. We will probably put in track lighting (I was thinking 5 lamps?) since it will work nice with the galley kitchen layout. Please let me know what you think.

We are removing the wall separating our LR from Kitchen, moving it about 1 ft (to match up with ceiling beam) then enclosing our former DR to create a second bedroom. This is a picture of the LR, DR, and kitchen before demo.

Here is the amount of dust that covered everything. they needed to take the plastic down when cleaning up the demolition debris. I think when they vacuumed, it deposited the dust everywhere.

GACK! You've just singlehandedly managed to blast me right into a time warp! Although our layouts are totally different, I feel like you're posting pics of my house, January last year.

I feel for you, truly. It will get worse, & then it will be so so so much better. Keep breathing & remember to have fun :)

Thanks for the replies. Im not sure what to make of the figs slow progress, by all accounts they love hot weather, and even if they didn’t the last 2 weeks have been fairly mild in comparison to the first two weeks with temperatures sitting between 25-30oC (77-86F), only getting above 30 once, which should be fairly ideal. Fertilising may be an issue, although they have been getting their half strength solution quite regularly, sometimes 2x a week. If it isn’t going to hurt them I can give them a full strength measure at their next watering and see if that kicks them into action. If I could make a guess, I would say it comes down to water, since the plants wilted whilst the soil feels damp to touch (at least in the top few cms) I would say there is possibly patches of dry mix or, as I left some of the original soil mix around the root ball, this may have dried out, or isn’t staying wet. I have been silly and haven’t once checked with a dowel or anything, but believe the soil is probably quite wet now as last week we had a few days solid rain in a row. If this theory is correct then hopefully it should become evident quite quickly as the plants will start putting out growth again (I hope). This morning, despite being watered last on Saturday, all my pots feel wet, almost soaked, right on the top. After work I will stick a skewer in and see if this is the case through the whole mix. My other thoughts were that I had been over fertilising and the plants could not take up water, but I just don’t know that a high enough level of salts could have built up in such a small amount of time, especially since at each watering I let a fair bit of water flow out the pots. @shazaam I am fertilising only with the regular miracle grow for all plants, with some added vinegar and Epson salts for the blueberries. I am not sure what N source is used, but will check and see if it ammonia or nitrate based. I have been searching for a soluble acid loving formula, but although it is on their website I haven’t been able to locate in stores. Perhaps if it is nitrate based I will see if I can find any ammonia based product somewhere. I added some slow release acid loving Osmocote when mixing, which is likely to have an ammonia base, but I am sure someone stocks a soluble somewhere in my city…

Finally a clear picture. I'm surprised but that really looks like dichondra. I didn't think it would grow in NJ. Now I'm thinking it is larger leaves and the perspective is hard to see. If they leaves are no bigger than a dime, then it is dichondra. Compared to your thumb in the blurry picture, I'm going with dichondra (pronounced die KON druh). Either way, since you have it now, you will have a brazillian seeds come up in the spring. Weed-b-gone at the earliest opportunity (considering your new seedlings, of course) will take it out and stop it from dropping new seeds. Then do the same in the spring. Don't rely on weed-n-feed to do this. Use a real herbicide to kill weeks and a real fertilizer to fertilize. The problem with these types of broad leaf weeds is they block the sunlight from the soil and slow the grass from spreading. You need it out.

Yeah, I have an Orbit timer setup with three different valves, each valve runs three sprinklers (I wish I had put in an underground sprinkler system, but oh well). I haven't measured how many inches yet, but I run each valve for 15 minutes (45 min total) each day, until it starts to runoff. Now I'm down to 15 minutes each valve every 3 days since it's only in the 90's now. It does take a lot of water, but it's well worth it and water is dirt cheap here...imagine that in the desert! (I only pay about $25/month for about 2500 cubic ft.). Soil is rock hard clay, no sand, you literally have to use a sharpened pick axe to dig it up. What I did to prepare was pick axe the whole dirt back yard (about 8" down), then mixed in a truck load of compost (about 30% compost). There were some areas where the grass grew great until the heat kicked in, so I dug those up last week and reseeded (I didn't dig down deep enough so the roots stopped growing). I water at 5am, and humidity is only like 10% usually, so yeah, no fungal disease worries here! In the peak of summer it gets down to the 80's only, now it gets down to 50's. We freeze overnight in Jan/Feb as well. I was amazed to see Tall Fescue growing here too (since it's cool season grass), but a lot of lawns here are fescue and that's pretty much all the stores carry. I use the generic Contractor's Mix from Lowes (which is one of the cheaper bags, but I've had great success with it), I'll have to check what cultivars are in the bag and report back.

Looking good, in a month it's going to be sweet. In response to your questions: 1. When and if it all do I hit grass seedlings with a shot of starter fertilizer? After your second mowing would be a good time to do another half app. 2. Do I apply milo again? If you want to use it you can. The starter is providing plenty of quick release nutrients, the milo will provide slow release, organic matter, and iron, so feel free to apply it whenever you want. 3. When do I spray tenacity again or should I at all? Again, up to you. If your weed pressure is very low, you might not feel it's necessary. Read the label, but I think it's indicated that you can apply it to new grass 4 weeks after seeding, but I would probably wait until the new grass is mowed twice. 4. I have a bag of Lesco Fertilizer 19-0-7 with Dimension - should I use that before frost after topgrowth has stopped or is it unsafe for my seedlings? I had lots of crabgrass past spring and summer fyi. No, I would not use it this year, wait till next spring. Dimension isn't going to do anything for you at that time of the year, and it will lose effectiveness over time. As far as your watering. I would probably keep the same schedule you are on for another week to be sure most of the KBG germinates, then you can taper it down after that.

How about day 3??

When I was growing up, my parents also closed off the DR to convert it to a BR. We had a 3 BR, 1BA home with 2 parents, 6 kids, dog & assorted cats.

Needless to say, we needed more BR space as we got older (we had 4 girls in one BR & the 2 boys in another. When the DR was closed off the boys got that and we girls split...2/room.)

After my sister & I (the oldest 2) had grown up & moved away, they reclaimed the DR.

I do have a piece of advice for you regarding pictures, please try to post them smaller with blank lines b/w them. It's difficult to see them when you have to scroll horizontally and vertically to get the whole picture.

Do you have Microsoft Picture Manager? If so, you can resize your pics to under 500 x 500 pixels (resize using percentages to keep the correct ratio & not distort the picture.) If you don't have MS Picture Manager, utilize PhotoBucket's picture editing to reduce the sizes.

thanks for the advice on the pictures. Can i go back and edit an old post? We are in a 1 bedroom apartment and will be adding 1 more to the two of us in February.

Day 3 has mostly consisted of finishing the drywall and taping the seams on the new wall. The wall that was taken down continued further so they need to do some work on the corner. This is an old Apt bldg in NYC and the walls are all concrete and plaster.

Thats what the contractor uses to bring materials and garbage up and down in the apt bldg. Its his and i was wondering the same.
Sorry i havent updated in a while, the computer was in dust quarrantine for a while. i should be able to upload pics soon since we are on a 3 week break due to delayed cabinets.

Good luck with everything. I'm wondering what color cabinets you are going with. We are also using Medallion. You are a step ahead of us, though. Our kitchen is going in a new extension but its framed out so I can at least start to see some progress.

I may have to post some pictures on GW because I need someone to share my excitement/nervousness/"what are we nuts" feelings with. The friends we had over the other night didn't seem to share our enthusiasm as we dragged them outside with flashlights to look at studs. Nor did they understand my anguish over choosing a sink or a pull-out trash bin!!!
