You might also find out if the other two don't sell or if they do, whether they would have a remnant left that would cover your desk area that they would sell back to you. Would require a little working together, but could be a win-win if that's all you need.

You could also try offering the granite yard more money for the other slab - some places have been known to sell slabs out from under people who think they have them on hold :-)

I agree with lascatx and think I'd plan on the wood top if you can't get enough granite, but I'd wait to see if you actually can get some extra from the other people since you don't need much....

I think the desk in a stained cherry would be gorgeous. It may even be more interesting than having all one material.

Another alternative might be a calm black granite in an undertone that compliments the TB. I love the idea of mixing it up!

@weissman-already tried buying them out from under...a very nice, honest granite yard! They have been on hold for 7 of the 14 days per their policy. She knows I want them, so if the 14th day comes they might be mine!

I like the idea of using their remnant, but that might take a bit of coordinating! For now I am just waiting on the KD to call me back with some other prices of slabs in the same color family (that I don't love as much!), and info from the fabricator as to how much I really need and how conservative he can be in using the material!!

I like the idea of the wood top, especially for a desk. Yes, ask the fabricator what he can do. There is a point however, where you won't want to compromise. Don't agree to multiple seams, or not having the granite all flow in the same direction.

point well taken colorfast. I know my KD will look out for me, but I appreciate being informed as well! I will definately ask these quesitons! And you are right, there is a point where I won't want to compromise---I just don't happen to know where that point is yet :)

Not to hurt the feelings of the fabricator you're working with, but have you called all the other granite yards in your area? These can't be the last three slabs of Typhoon Bordeax in the country.

empet-I am definately not worried about hurting anyones feelings---I have looked at 3 different yards since I saw these last week.....they look nothing like these! Even the yard itself, has a warehouse in Ohio, they have other lots--they emailed me pics--they are not even remotely the same. So, I have started looking at other slabs in the same color family---as that is what is drawing me in..so far I have found 1 called eclipse--I am waiting on a price--but I am fearful it may be significantly out of my price range.

My mom has a wood top on her desk and it looks great. In fact, I think its what is expected on a desk. I also plan to put a wood top on desk when I renovate. Good luck!

When we were designing our kitchen, the KD suggested we do our peninsula in wood instead of soapstone. She said it was her experience that wood was not as cold (for putting elbows on, etc.) and was easier to write on. I'm happy we went with wood on that part of our counters (bar area). I'd suggest wood on your desk would be a better material than granite.

Calling other granite yards only works if they are out of the same lot number. My guess is your chances are at least 50/50 that the people with them on hold may not take them. The fabricator may also have enough left out of there 2 slabs to make it work with your 1 slab.

I just had typhoon bordeaux installed in my kitchen. When we picked our slabs out at the granite yard, there also were totally different slabs from separate lots. The ones we chose had more green/gray in them. The other ones had almost all red. It was amazing they were the same stone.

We chose to put wood on our buffet in the kitchen instead of granite. Just about every trade person who comes in comments on how nice the cherry counter looks.

a wood desk would be warmer to the touch when sitting there than granite.

I had the same experience with my granite. I fell in love with it and while looking at it, another couple put it on hold! The problem I had was that I needed 3 fairly large slabs to cover the area with the fewest seams. Luckily the other couple did not follow through on buying the granite so I got it. I hope that works out for you too. That said, I think the cherry would be beautiful as well. I just had cherry cabinets installed and they look great with the granite so the desk in cherry would look great. One word of caution. When we finally got our 3 slabs of granite from the same lot, only 2 of the 3 slabs were in sequential order. We made the mistake of not looking at all three slabs and the third slab was pretty different from the other two even though they were all from the same lot. It didn't turn out to be a big deal because we put the portion of the third slab on our cooktop so it's not so noticeable that it's different. I would suggest you make sure you see all the slabs you are purchasing and not assume they look the same. You really want to minimize seams if possible. I love the granite now that it's in. Is the desk white like the perimeter cabs? I think either a cherry top to match the island cabs or one of the solid black granites would look good there.

Yes cloud swift....same color as the perimeters. Spoke again to the KD, she's thinking a rich mahogany or maybe walnut.....I am thinking it would be warm and beautiful, regardless of what happens with this granite thing! Husband is pretty certain the rest of the kitchen can't be done out of 1 slab....but only the fabricator knows for sure....I should hear back from him today sometime!

Ok.... Here is the latest update.....I am LOVING my KD right now! We found out from the fabricator that it cannot be dne in 1 slab....which was a bad news, but she pressed and pressed....she wanted them to contact the other people and see if we could split the 3 slabs, 1 1/2 each...the granite yard miraculously found more slabs from the same lot that they gave to another dealer, so they are going to bring them back for me! I still have to see them and approve them....but they are from the same lot, so I am confident they will work out! 2 thumbs up for persistence!

We picked out our granite a few weeks ago and they tagged it with our name and fabricator. So if they are still sitting in the yard, see if the fabricator's name is on there. If not, explain your situation and see if they will tell who the fabricator is so you can get the remnant you need. And I took the great advice of GWers and wrote our name in permanent marker on our slabs and also took pictures. It has some pretty distinctive markings so I will definitely know if it was switched....I hope it works out for you!!

So, the granite yard is bringing in 4 slabs of my dark typhoon bordeaux (it is unlike any typhoon bordeaux I have ever seen!) I attached a pic a while back, but I don't know how to embed it??

My husband and I were planning a granite outing on 11/14, as hes off work....turns out, there is another potential buyer for the 2 slabs I don't take. The yard is giving us first choice (as they should!)...so I am going today with my KD to select 2 of the 4. Then, will go back with hubby next week so he can approve them!!!

I am so excited!! I will definately take pics of "my" slabs, and make sure they are tagged per GW's recommendations!

That is gorgeous! I also fell in love with a slab of typhoon bordeaux and It will be installed in a few weeks!! I love how each slab looks so unique.

Yahoo----put my 2 slabs of typhoon bordeaux on hold today!! I guess what everyone says here is true----once you fall in love!! I am so very happy with the colors in the granite! Now it's picking a sink/faucet. Waiting on cab color samples to come in. Ordered appliances yesterday. MOving right along!
