Hi I'm new here and need some granite help!

Hi everyone I am new here but have been reading for awhile. We are in the middle of planning two major bathroom remodels, and have decided to replace the kitchen countertops with granite while we are at it. The budget is super tight, so the kitchen unfortunately is going to have to stay as is for the most part but I know that simply changing the counters to granite will make a huge difference. I am hoping, though to find some used stainless appliances on Craigslist. And there is the possibility of painting the cabinets down the road (not soon) or walls so feel free to throw some ideas my way!

Anyhow, my question is, we like New Venetian Gold, but will it blend in too much and look bland in my kithcnen? I have shown a sample of it in my kitchen to give you an idea. We are also considering Tropical Brown as an alternative, darker color. Which would look better, or any other ideas? Thanks and sorry so long.

Hi grateful and welcome to the forum. I personally think the VG look great in your setting and would much prefer it to Tropical Brown. Your kitchen doesn't look as if it gets an over abundance of light and I think the TB would look to heavy/drab. You have beautiful wood floors and a table... the Venetian will highlight it perfectly!

I like the Venetian, it's a nice warm creamy color. I agree with remodelfla, and I think the brown would be too dark.

Here's a repeat of my post from another thread: Posting photos is pretty easy. Go to Photobucket.com and set up a free account. Upload your pictures to that account....make sure the pictures aren't HUGE tho. Once you have your photos all uploaded, open 2 browsers...one here and the other at photobucket. In this message section, type what you want (ie. Plumeria name, etc) then from your second browser at photobucket, click the 3rd bar down under the picture you want to use...the one that says HTML Code. Just clicking on that space copies the pic. Go back to the message box here, right click and hit paste. You can do this several times. It really is easy once you try it...We all would love to see some pics! Jo

Fair enough. Soy based inks have VERY VERY VERY LOW levels of VOC's. :) Heck, even wood releases some VOCs as do some trees as they grow (turpenes, for example). Actually, the USDA says none, if you want to believe them. "Using more soy oil in the vehicle means that less pigment (black, blue, red, and yellow) is needed, because the soy oil provides a lighter vehicle," says Erhan. And soy-based printing inks contain no volatile organic compounds." Note this is an OLD article, 1995, so take it for what it's worth. Curious, what makes you think that ALL VOC's are "unsafe"? Do you have access to employment counselor services? Something like that might be able to help you get an idea of what kinds of professions might fit your framework of needs. There are many things you could theoretically do from home. Anything that would be computer-based and which doesn't require your physical presence in any particular place seems like it would fit. Telephone-based too maybe would fit. Depending on what your current job-details are you might be able to do it from home. Talking to your current human relations department people might be a good idea (if you work someplace what has a HR department). If you haven't considered it, it might be worth considering part time or flex time arrangements where you are. The big immediate thing it sounds like is the lack of daycare for your baby and the fact of being in the post partum period. If you can't find acceptable care, try asking at your present place of employment what options exist. (They might shock you by enabling your job to be adapted in order to accomodate your needs.) Because you are in the post partum period physically, you need to consider some issues. The idea is to consider for yourself whether large changes were a good idea before, will still be a good idea in a year or two (as best you can imagine a year or so into the future), and whether they are in your family's best interests and in line with your goals and plans for the future. Give that a lot of consideration. It's not unusual for a woman's post partum changes to cause changes in the way she thinks of and perceives things. This is usually a positive kind of mothering thing that goes nicely with having to care for a newborn. Sometimes though in the whole first year that effect can be more extreme from time to time and cause a woman to want to make sweepingly huge changes which may not be in line with her longer term goals. (This kind of effect is usually transient and just giving extra thought and consideration to the changes that seem (at the time) to be needed can help her to know which changes will be best.) Writing or thinking, or recording, or things like that are useful tools to sort things out. and, as usual if you feel depressed or anxious or overwhelmed (either up or down) in a way that impacts your ability to function in general in a negative way talk to your doctor P.S. It seems like any kind of billing, or writing-based tasks could be done from home (and some of those kinds of things may be required in the kinds of areas where you do have experience). Make sure you know or can easily meet the people you work for; that's a good way to at least avoid some scams. An additional thing is to check the better business bureau or make sure the people or places you work for have good reputations that they have an interest in maintaining and improving.

another vote for VG. It really looks like you can dramatically change the look of your kitchen with the granite countertop!

I also think VG is the way to go in your kitchen. You might feel that once you do that, you won't feel the need to change your cabinets. SS appliances and maybe a lighter color on the wall to blend with the counter (or a new tile backsplash) will go a long way I think.

NVG is like "The Resale Beige of Granite" - it will go with just about ANY color
scheme and look terrific for decades. Craigslist for used or closeout SS
appliances is a great source (if you can't afford brand new)

Another vote for NVG first because I think it would look great in your space, second because I just like it looks good with almost anything and last because I think TB would be to dark for your space. BTW love your floors.

I agree: NVG. I don't think your black appliances are terrible.. You could just replace oven with a black one and paint or replace the fridge.

Thanks so much every one. New Venetian was the granite that I had originally liked, I first took home a sample of Santa Cecilia with all the big red sparkly spots but my husband said it was too "white" and he preferred darker like Tropic Brown but to go with what I liked...but then when I went back I saw the New Venetian and loved it too, but the granite guy said it may blend into our kitchen too much and look bland, and that Tropic Brown would be better. The good think about Tropic Brown is that it has a nice shine to it. I would just hate to spend this much money and have it not look amazing! I really appreciate everyone's opinions.

for what it's worth ( and I AIN'T no Decorator ) But.......

NVG looks like TOTALLY WAY COOL when it's teamed up with Uba Tuba !!!

We did this in our last home - I did NVG / St Cecilia (really close) on the floor
of our guest bath with a border of Uba Tuba, I did the lav top in Uba Tuba
with a 2 1/2" full bullnose * undermount Kohler caxton sink - gold faucet
fixtures....

Totally THE BOMB !!!! It was an instant classic look and it helped sell the
house (in 4 hours after it hit the market).

Just wanted to throw that one out there for anyone looking to do something
cool - but on a budget........

I'll try to post some pics if I can find them - I usually take pics of client's
projects, but rarely of what I do in my own home......

I had VG in my last house and loved it! It went nicely with my cherry cabinetry and didn't show crumbs or anything at all!! We have since moved and my new neighbor has NVG (slightly lighter than the original VG) on cream cabinets and it looks wonderful with that combo too, so I agree that it's a very versatile granite that looks good with lots of different cabinet colors. Since you might eventually paint your cabinets in the future, I would stick with the NVG which might look better with painted cabinets, especially if you are thinking about cream.

Also, the darker the granite, the more dust it shows. At least that has been my experience, so the NVG is a great middle ground and won't be a headache with showing stuff the way a darker granite might.

If you find them, I would love to see some pics with NVG and/or St. Cecilia teamed UbaTuba in the same space.
I am considering Uba for my kitchen but not sure about so much of the same dark so was thinking about another granite for the island but I have no idea how to mix and match granites!

I vote for the NVG also. there is so much wood / brown now that the tan granite would just make it blah I think. the lighter granite would perk it up.

why wouldn't it shine when polished up?

your cabinets look fine to me - and the granite will really give your kitchen a major zap. be sure to post a pic when you get it done.

Hi- I am also remodeling and need granite help- I am going with cream cabinets w/ walnut glaze and dark cherry island. Would really like light granite that looks like marble- any suggestions?
