ni 2006 -- as to your question about whether cabinets come with the light rail: It depends on who is making your cabinets. For many cabinet companies, it is an option. My advise to you is to make sure you resolve that issue as you are designing your kitchen and cabinets, and not afterward, like we did. While we love our finished kitchen, our cabinet maker messed up and didn't account for our undercabinet lighting, which was mentioned in our contract and everything. The electrician installed the lighting like he was supposed to, but we are still fighting with the cabinet maker to install a rail to hide the lighting. We just want a simple inch-and-a-quarter plain rail around the bottom of the cabinets to hide the lights (that's how much they show). We may end up doing it ourselves. Our cabinets are 18 inches above our counter, so an inch and a quarter won't be so much to take away from that, although I would have preferred that it would be that much space after the light rail. It was one of a million details in our house remodel that I didn't pay enough attention to, and now here we are, but I think it's going to be okay. So bottom line is, decide on that now, before it is too late and you are left with few choices. Make sure everyone is on board: cabinet maker/company, electrician, etc.

Thank you rhome for coming to my rescue again. That looks perfect. It is beyond my capabilities to render anything like that so I'm just going to keep that picture and instructions for when we start pricing cabs - soon, yikes! Hutch taller than windows, windows centred on wall. Do you think some open shelves would look good in the corner? I was thinking of maybe going around the corner from window to window - with breathing space. My DH doesn't mind open shelving or anything else I want to do ; ). He just didn't want them next to the dw for all our glasses, sippy cups, gawdy disney straw cup, etc. Now I think about it, I really don't understand why. I keep forgetting what my real life is. I was thinking of wood shelving stained whatever colour my cabinets happen to be - lots of choices there. I almost hate to put this up because your idea is so much better than what I had in mind, I feel like it is sort of ungrateful not to just to take it and run but.. What do you think of this pic? Would something like this (not exactly this) work at the end of that run of cabinets? or should I just quit while I'm ahead?

Look at Revere Pewter it is a griege that has a greenish look to it. I've painted cabinets with it and loved it!

Ooh a nice moody dramatic kitchen. :) I'd consider instead painting all the white trim and doors. Perhaps a yellowy cream like the chairs seem to be and the yellow bit in the backsplash. If you do paint the cabinets, I think the same green that is on the walls but a little darker could be lovely. On the other hand, the cinnamon color goes so well with all your other elements in this room and the next. What about the island? If you do some green, and leave some wood, the island would go green, right?
