where to end backsplash?

We are getting ready to put up our backsplash but can't decide how and where to end it in one particular area. All the other edges will die into the trim or a corner but we're stuck. We are using standard white subway tile and the only edge options are the skinny tiles with a bullnose on the long side. Since this is the only area we would need to finish off I don't really want to use those. Should we do a schluter strip and finish at the outside corner? Die into the inside corner and touch up the paint on the side area? Since the area is near the sink I would like the protection of a backsplash but wonder if it will look silly.

I would stop in the inside corner and touch up the paint on the side wall.

I love the framed pictures at the end of the wall, but this is just my own petty little opinion, I think it would call less attention to the backsplash dilemma if the pictures were centered on the wall space between the door and cabinet shelves end. That way you would never even think about the backsplash and just look at the pictures and not wonder why they weren't centered on the wall, which in turn would lead to explaining the dilemma about the splash. I know that was a run-on sentence...sorry!!!

Assuming the right side of the upper right hand cabinet is an inch or two from the corner, I'd stop the splash there. I don't like the idea of running it all the way to the corner, because I think it would look awkward from the side. I'd cap the end with metal (Schluter), but any unobtrusive cap would be OK. Honestly, I'm more concerned about the way the hood isolates the upper right wall cabinet - it looks lost over there - and would think about continuing the tile up to the bottom of the hood, or even up to the top of the wall cabinets, to tie it into the rest of the cabinet line.

If the island is light grey, a corresponding light grey glass or ceramic subway would be lovely, or a whisper-light blue if the grey on the island is cool-toned. I'm not a fan of herringbone splashes, they're too busy for my taste, but I'm probably in the minority on that.

I might tile the side wall as well. It looks like it could be another wet area to me

We tiled our side wall (2 subways high). We find that area always had items pushed into it (coffee maker, toaster) and that caused it to need frequent paint touch ups.

I agree with Errant. I almost always prefer the tile to die there than carry around the side wall. I've been living with painted backsplash area for almost 3 years and haven't needed a touch up in paint except maybe where the raging flame from my CC rangetop has discolored the are directly behind the center rear burner from my extremely high heat searing and stir frying.

What did you do with the other end of the counter run? If it is tiled. I would probably just go into the corner and not wrap it unless the other end has that finish.

Since it is so close to the sink I would tile the side wall.

Stop at the inside corner, Will be a much cleaner look. If you need to touch up that little wall once in a while, no biggie to have a very clean look.

No no no no. You have your dish drainer there. You are correct - you must tile your side wall to protect your cabinets, walls, floor and sub floor from water damage.

Use a bullnose tile to finish the edge.
