Why not try their kitchen cabs? If you install them without toe kicks, they may get to a similar height.

But would the drawers open if they are not elevated off the floor?

I recall seeing a home office in a nice house a while back - sellers were a couple who were into design profession. I had always wondered about the usability and therefore thought of it as a great testimony that the concept could work.

However, theirs was a storage system -- they did not use the top of the drawers as a desk but used shelves etc. to create a floor-to-ceiling office system. Also they seemed to have cut it to make it a bit shallower.

The actual desk in the office was a freestanding desk -- but all this tied together really well. The desk had been "integrated" to look like a part of this space.

Recently I saw that Ikea is incorporating soft close type hardware into their bathroom vanities etc. so that's another option you might want to try.

Thank you for the info, bostonpam. So how high off the floor is the countertop? I'm wanting to use a natural edge piece of wood as the top so I'm afraid that might make it too high. I may just have to go with a company like Shenandoah/AW that makes office cabinetry. Any other brands you guys would recommend?

We were going to do this... first priced out actual kitchen cabs at a big box store (way too expensive) and then looked at IKEA. In the end, for our time and budget, we ended up using their office furniture as opposed to the kitchen cabs. Not sure if this is too modular for your taste, but here's a glimpse of what we did (this is kids' side of room; other side has much the same set up but with double the length desk (and *much* messier, hence no pic!))

The top of our "desk" is 33 1/8" high.

If I didn't go with Ikea I would have used Kraftmaid office furniture. I needed a lot of file drawers and that would have been an issue with Kraftmaid. I could have only 2 file drawers with Kraftmaid but with Ikea I get 2 file drawers and a top drawer.

The top of the Kraftmaid office box is 29". The top of an Ikea cabinet is 30 3/8" but you still need/should have a toe kick. Making it as small as possible is the way to go. You have some adjustment in your chair to make up the height difference. Mine doesn't have that much so that's why I'm going with the bigger wheels. I think it adds 2" to the chair.

Ikea cabinets have so much more room than going with any office furniture so that was really the deciding factor (plus price). The furniture pieces have a 4" toe kick so now you're looking at a 25" cabinet vs. a 30 3/8" cabinet. Ikea also uses interior drawer space so much better too.

I'm very tall and made a custom desk in my office that measures 31" from floor to desk top. Do you feel that 33 1/8 is a bit high?

My home office is "built in" ikea cabinets and their butcherblock counter for the desk.

Do you have a plan or even a current state you could post so we could help? Even a picture?
