Comments (107)this is a gorgeous kitchen! More on India ink as stain: I've used it on furniture a lot. Be SURE you get permanent India ink. It has some shellac in it to make it more waterproof. It has amazing coverage. I have done an entire armchair frame with only an ounce or two. It's also very messy if you drip it, so wear old clothes and get some disposable latex gloves. It may raise the grain on some woods. Sand the wood smooth before applying it, then do a very light sanding after it's completely dry, if it feels at all rough. Apply a second coat if the sanding removes any of the color. The color is a warm black. It's opaque but the grain of the wood will show through, unlike with paint. It's a pretty unique finish. I have never used Waterlox over my ink finishes, since they were furniture. I think you do need something though--the finish doesn't seem to be super permanent even though the ink is labeled permanent. (That's more for when it's used on paper, not furniture or counters that get a lot of wear and tear.) I used beeswax on the furniture which seemed to seal the ink pretty well. I don't think I would use it on wooden chair seats, though. Too much risk of rubbing off on clothing down the road....See MoreNeed layout advice (for small office) - IKEA
Comments (1)How fun to design an office! I like the idea of facing the desks to each other. I'm thinking it might be better to put them under the window; no one has their back to the door and there might be less glare on your computer screens if they're perpendicular to the window. Distance between desk edge and the wall is really personal preference, but I think around dining tables it's a 32" minimum if no one needs to pass behind. I'm not sure if your existing desk tops can be paired with the Skarsta bases, but we really like our Skarsta. The base is adjustable with a hand crank so you can easily move your desktop up and down so you can sit/stand. It's nice to change position if you're working at your computer for long periods. With your desks below the window I thought you could put the file cabinet at the end of the desks and the guest chair in front of the interior window. We use Elfa from the Container Store in our home office and are very pleased. They can handle a lot of weight and you can design the shelves to work around your fridge. You can also hang varying depths of shelves (e.g. you could have shallow shelves above the fridge, but deeper shelves at counter height and below for a standing work surface and larger item storage if you need it.)...See MoreJust had a virtual IKEA kitchen planning appointment--it worked well
Comments (9)Patricia--I was fortunate in that I had the accurate measurements from someone who basically turned out to be a shyster kitchen remodel company. The neighbor who had hired and recommended him eventually had to resort to getting her credit card company to dispute the charges. Obviously, after hearing form her, his company was out. And, I had also measured myself and had a very good idea of exactly what I wanted. We haven't ordered yet and it will be a while since I need to have a contractor do some other structural work first. Also, I am finding out that appliances are now in very short supply, so that's another big problem for people like me who need to start over and get all new appliances. I really like the look of the Askersund and that is what I have planned on using, but I am somewhat concerned since this is laminate over particleboard and I worry about durability. I need a light color, so I also priced out the solid wood Torhamn even though I don't like the look as well. This is the more expensive choice....See MoreWould flat cabinet doors work in a kitchen in a traditional apartment?
Comments (1)The kitchen is so close to the cabinet next to the fireplace, and you are going white, thinking a match, (raised panel) would be a better choice. However, if you want flat panels for the kitchen, do so, but not in white… This idea with flat panels (not necessarily suggesting purple…maybe the color of your sofa?)....See Morehomey_bird
