Taking Back Our Kitchens . . . Remember?

Are you there yet . . .or can you remember back to when the work wasn't totally completed but you could finally start to put your things into your new cabs . . .in your new kitchen? I'm finally there! We were away visiting our DS at grad school out of state for four days and when we came back, the sink and faucets were in. The protective floor paper was off. The cabs all had their hardware on. We had lights in the kitchen again. The Silestone counters had been installed the day before we'd left. It was finally looking and feeling like a real kitchen yesterday, instead of a war zone! Our GC told me that I could start putting away things late yesterday afternoon as he was leaving and it was so much fun! I washed. I dusted. I vacuumed. I put LOTS of things away! This morning it seems like people are just invading my kitchen and I can't wait for them to go home ;~)

They're installing our new fridge as I write this. The cabs still need a bit of tweaking and they need to put the cab fronts on the DW and fridge. The painter needs to come back another time to tweak. (I'm, frankly, getting tired of all this "tweaking"!) The plumbers need to hook up the R/O and cooktop today. The electrician still needs to install the rest of the new pot lights. The tiler still needs to do the backsplash areas. But, we're almost there and it feels so good to finally see the end in sight! Remember?

Oooohh, I want to be in your shoes :-) It must be a delicious feeling to unpack the boxes and find a new home for all your things in that beautiful space. Enjoy the moment and post some pictures when you get a chance!

Not only would I like to be in your shoes for level of completion, but if we left for 4 days, things would still look the same as when we left! Ours is 95+% DIY...A necessity and something we're enjoying, but I'm TIRED and want to move in! I am loving that things are coming together, though, and get more excited with each bit of progress. I can only imagine how you feel to see the last details going in. Congratulations, Lynn!

Hi, Karen! I think that only Candy can get the perfect Candy shot, but I did my best...LOL! The S&P are Lenox Holiday Inspirations and Illustrations and they are on sale! I added a link to them below or you can go to the Lenox site. Inspirations and Illustration was a new addition to Lenox's Holiday line last year. And in a couple of days, the tenth anniversary of 9/11. Seeing clips from the event, the whole traumatic aftermath, it brings a big lump to my throat. And tonight after the President spoke, they made a news break that there is probably a terrorist event planned for Washington or New York City....not known yet what or where. It made me feel sick on my stomach. I guess they want us to get the message that any time they wish, they can reach out and get us. But we shall see. This country was not created and defended by wimps and cowards. God bless America.

My personal reaction is that those little cabinets way up high are useless. Decorative only, and once something like a pitcher is up there, it will never come back down again. I'm personally not willing to pay for that. I also like the 42"-high cabinets I have. I can put boxes of seldom-used stuff on the upper shelves, bcs they're behind doors. I'm short, so I would never go with those little shelves that raise the bottom of the cabinet up. Never. I can barely reach the second shelves of my cabinets anyway! And I'd totally lay down parchment, waxed paper, or newspapers (but probably not newspapers; they make me worry they'd draw more bugs) on the tops (I did get grease and dust mixed together up there; that's why I went against the modern trend and installed a soffit). If I were more worried about roaches, I wouldn't. I like lots of drawers, but not necessarily *all* drawers. I'd pay more for drawers, gladly. Regarding drawer slides: I want full extension; I'll pay tons extra to get it. I don't think dovetail is necessary, but often it's part of the package. The soft-close is nice, so I'd pay a little more to get it. Hope that helps!

Ohhhhh, I would love to see some pics of your silestone. I saw your kitchen pictures the other day and it is gorgeous. I am anxiously awaiting my Sienna Ridge Silestone. Enjoy your new kitchen and I hope you get rid of everyone soon!

I've been wanting to take some new pics, but my camera battery is dead after our four day trip and I can't find the darn battery charger for it! I'll keep looking for it, though.

I am in the same place.....tomorrow after the floors are finished in my whole downstairs...im am going to start putting my life back in order....will rummage through the disaster zone in the garage..... cabinets in ...granite...floors..appliances.... alot of tweaking going on and people still in and out....but i am starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel.... i share your excitement and cant wait till its truly finished.!

I'm almost done. And now I'm stumped! When I was doing my planning and rehearsing my delight at a brand new kitchen I forgot to imagine moving back in. Now I've got to and I'm intimidated. We changed out layout quite a bit so I have no idea where things go. =o

I would say that we are in the same 90% done range......we have water (so no more doing dishes in the laundry tub), a working wall oven and microwave and gas to the new Wolf 36" range. DH powered up the Vent-a-hood last night so I think I will try to burn off the Wolf tonight if I have the energy.....will post on the Appliance forum what my results are for those of you that are following the Wolf burner saga....

What's left? Cabinet doors, final hook-up of the electrical (under cab lighting etc), fridge install.....

We have been at this for 8 weeks now and while our contractor has been great (we're also redoing our master ensuite bath and hardwood flooring on the second floor) we want to be done!!!! Every day after the lastest new improvement gets completed I say to DH ' now what I am really looking for is....." Currently, that's have a garbage can in the kitchen.....

We can use the kitchen but it's still a bit of work to find the spices, the pasta, the utensils etc.....

Next Monday we should have the cab doors and Tuesday the electrician.....So hopefully by this time next week, I can say we're 99% done!!!! Now to figure out where to put the stuff in the dining room in all that cabinet space......!!!

Oh I had so much fun unpacking my kitchen. But it's driving my husband nuts because I keep tweaking (there's that darn word again!:)) where everything should go. Some people have that all planned out ahead of time, I wasn't quite so organized!

Have fun Lynn, now go find that battery charger!

Too funny, but I know what you mean! I'm driving my husband nuts, too, as he can't find anything . . . and then I tweak it and he has to search for it's new location.
