I'm finally feeling that it is DONE

Well, by my records I think we're talking about 8 months time. Not bad I guess. On Friday we finally got the replacement solid doors for my kitchen hutch, and I can really now say my project is complete. I know you've seen most of these pix/angles before, but here is what I really consider my "Finished Kitchen" - along with some "before" shots, 'cause I can believe how far I've come!!

Also, I resized most of my photos. Sorry for the couple that I didn't do.

So that's it. My project really is done. I've been on here in waves - sometimes very frequently, sometimes not very often. I got tons of ideas and suggestions. My kitchen absolutely would NOT have turned out the way it did without this site. I do still check back every so often to see if I can offer a little advice to anyone - in case there are people asking about issues, materials, etc. that I used or dealt with in my project. I still love to look at pictures of people's in-progress or finished kitchens. If anyone has any specific questions about anything I've done, please ask away!!

De-lurking here to say it's not just you! We had a strange spring with wild weather swings (up to 40F from daytime to night), and I have to say...this is the crappiest rose season I've had in 8 years. Very abundant number of buds--probably the most ever--but the quality of the individual flowers just stinks. Like the worst thrips damage ever, but each and every rose has it. Some roses had stunted/balled/withered buds, others had blackened petal edges, still others didn't bother with blooms. My Queen Elizabeths, easily the most prolific roses in my garden, haven't bloomed yet. There are some old, established bushes that hardly went beyond their pruned size and only spewed a few deformed buds. Thrips are normally a problem on my light colored roses, but this blight is affecting every color. The later developing buds are better--if on the small side. It's the roses that developed first (late April to early May, which is quite late for us) that were the worst. Surprisingly, the roses that seemed to shrug it off best were some of my David Austins--Jude, the Dark Lady, and a few others. But some of the DA's (Abraham Darby) and other shrub roses and climbers (like Sombreuil) were just horrific. My mom came over and said "you know, if you just look at the roses from the house, they're not so bad." Sigh. And we had such a lovely, rainy winter (for us) that I was sure the rose flush was going to be awesome. And the numbers were truly impressive--hundreds of buds on some of my small (3 ft) bushes, which is the best I've seen. But again, the actual quality of the buds was the worst I've ever seen. Some tried and true winners from my garden were hard pruned just because I couldn't bear to look at their browned/blackened/crinkly/balled horrible little blooms. These included: memorial Day, Queen Elizabeth, Sheer Bliss, Peace (sob), Marilyn Monroe, Daybreaker, New Zealand, Just Joey, blue Nile, Evelyn, Abe Darby, Charles Darwin, Autumn Sunset, Golden Something(normally gorgeous downturned sunny yellow blooms, but this time they didn't even open!),Chicago Peace, Tamora, Pink Peace, Mirandy, Mary Rose, Secret (double sob), McCartney Rose, Tiffany....I could go on, but I'm feeling kind of nauseous. To put it in different terms: I have over 160 rose bushes with few repeats, and this year I have only brought six cut blooms into the house. SIX. But who can really blame the poor roses? Last week we hit 100 degrees on Monday, and on Thursday the high was 54 with rain (snow in Flagstaff, poor buggers). What is a plant to do in these conditions? Apparently, they sulk. Now it's getting to be blistering hot again, with humidity in the single digits. Spider Mite season. I won't likely see a good bloom until September, and then the deer and javelinas will be moving in for their Autumn feast. I'm thinking of getting into daffodils. At least the lilies, Shasta daisies, coreopsis, and cannas are doing well. And the glads look like they might actually open this year (last year they were all duds). I'm off to sulk myself. Heather

I'm hoping that you are still reading these threads, pirula. I have been lurking around for a few months, gathering information, inspiration, etc., for my kitchen remodel and have (very nearly) made some decisions -- many in common with your kitchen. Before we start making purchases, I was hoping you might be able to answer a few questions: 1. Your Lacanche -- have you had any problems with the size of the ovens (do you bake? I have small children who love to make cookies, pies, cupcakes, you name it)? I am considering the Volnay (want that warming cupboard) but am trying to decide if we would also need to work in a 30" electric oven. What do you think of the gas convection/broiler? Have you had any service type problems with the Lacanche? I'm worried about ordering such an expensive piece of equipment and then not being able to get it serviced (we live in So. Cal.). 2. Crown Point cabinets: Are the cabinets separate unit boxes, or were they built together for each wall? Did you use the CP designers? Did they get it right (were there any measurement issues)? Did you have any walls that were out of plum to deal with? If so, how did that work? Did you do anything to seal the paint and how is it holding up? Do you miss having upper wall cabinets? 3. Your island: How big is it? You seem to have packed a lot of stuff in there (I think I noticed a wine refrigerator, microwave and dishwasher drawers -- have I missed anything?) 4. Your window (WOW): This is exactly what we're planning to do in our house -- we want nice old school cased windows. Anything you can tell me about this window would be much appreciated. We're replacing a sliding glass door that takes up an entire exterior wall in the kitchen (what a waste of space) with a standard dutch door and then windows, windows, windows. 5. Your butcherblock counters: What kind of wood did you use? How thick is it? Is it sealed? With what? How is the finish holding up around your prep sink? Did CP make the counters, too? If not, where did you get them? I know it's a lot of questions. Any answers you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Is that threads from the fabric edges in that blue trash can??? If so you can turn them into a work of art.Get a bunch of them,put them in a shadow box frame,add some pieces of crochet thread,metallic threads,some pretty buttons,like mother of pearl,and some glitter.Seal it up and hang on the wall. Here's a picture of mine.Mine was the results of a shower curtain and bathroom accessories i was making for a display for the store i worked at.The fabric scraps were what went into the trash bag at the serger.I looked at them and thought they were too pretty to dump out so i added the other stuff and put it all in a shadow box frame.I like it and still have it. Dear all, Here's a copy of email I sent to the three Kids: Dear SS, SD1 and SD2, SS, your father tried phoning this evening, left a message, and turned in for bed before 9pm. He did have an opportunity to speak with SD2 on the phone a bit earlier, and he went to visit with SD1 at (her work) for a couple of hours today. I want you to know that we would really, really enjoy having all three of you here for a few days to spend lots of time with each other and your father. I know you all would like it best if he would come to (SD's hometown) (either with or without me), but he's feeling pretty stressed, and does not want to travel at all right now. He and I had planned to have a couple of days in the motorhome this September. We had talked about it in the late summer, after it was evident that we weren't going to be busy canning our non-existent fruit this year. But now he doesn't want to go anywhere. He seems to forget about the plans we had made -- that's just how things are right now. It's been very confusing to him to have all the conversations with all three of you about how, where, dates, etc., regarding this visit and trying to explain how and why he feels like he does. What he would like best is for all of you to come here and stay in our home or cottage (which we are still keeping vacant until we hear the final plans). Right now he's most comfortable at home, and he can't think of being anywhere else. I think the best thing to do for everyone would be to just try and make this visit as easy as possible, as comfortable as possible for everyone, and just plan on having nice relaxing days "chewing the fat", reminiscing, and hanging out together. Going sightseeing, going on adventures, experiencing new things ... are out of his comfort level. He's unsure on his feet, is afraid of feeling confused, and can't describe how he feels at times. I know that I have many projects I can work on and things I can do on my own, which would afford all of you time to be there to talk, listen, and nap with your father as you see fit! Who knows, you might all enjoy relaxing in one of his two favorite rooms and close your eyes like he does! Maybe there will be a day where your father feels less weak, confused, agitated or stressed and he will feel like riding with me over to SS's town, SD2's town, or SD1's Island -- but that day is sure not now. Since I'm the only one here who can tell you what it's like to no longer have your parents alive, I'll let you know this: It's final. It's nothing you can wish or pray to change. There are no more opportunities to enjoy their presence. There are no more opportunities to say what you wanted to or should have said. And if I had to live with regrets for not doing what I knew I needed to do ... well, it would be unbearable. Please understand that I'm not trying to "guilt" any of you into anything ... I'm just trying to share what I've learned because I've recently experienced losing both of my dear parents. They weren't perfect; my father especially wasn't always easy; and I wasn't always the best daughter. However, next to your father, their wellbeing and happiness were my top priorities. Above all else, you must know that my love, time, energy, and money went to care for them and your father, as it does now for your father alone. I know that I tried to put myself in their shoes and do everything I possibly could for them, just as I would hope that my daughter and granddaughter will do for me someday. So, please do what you can to visit with him sooner rather than later. As we all know, "later" doesn't always arrive. He should find out within a couple of days when he has to go to (foreign country for work). I would prefer October 17 as I think it would be better for my work. Our freshmen are arriving tomorrow and school begins September 22. Its always crazy this time of year and I can feel the tension around my office increasing each hour. So IÂm hoping that (brother - SS) will know in two days (by Thursday) if he is available Oct. 17. If he doesnÂt know by then, maybe IÂll need to get bite the bullet and be brave and let (my boss) know IÂm taking Friday, Sept. 26 off (donÂt ask, tell her!!) and weÂll come that weekend. I want to know by Thursday so that I can book at least a one week in advance flight. IÂm leaning towards flying out on Thursday night but that will get me in to Seattle between 10-11 pm then I will need to drive to (your home). If I leave on Friday, half the day is over before I get there. I will be leaving Sunday evening whether we come Sept. 22 or October 17 to get back to work on Monday. IÂm sorry for all the confusion and seemingly indecisiveness. But itÂs just that all of our lives, like everyone elseÂs, is complicated with all 3 of our work schedules. I don't know the need for another vehicle while you're all here, but that's up to you, of course. Your father's still in bed, and I'm bringing coffee in to him and we'll sit and enjoy that. I'll let him know of the (still possible) dates. I know he'll feel relieved and happy to know that you'll all three be here. And SD2, the lawyer I worked with for so long (and who is still a good friend and I admire so much) had a lovely sign in his office. About "easier to ask forgiveness than permission". I think you'll find this true with your boss! Of course, we got most of our clients through that same adage ... trying to sort out their "forgiveness" because they hadn't asked "permission", but I don't think (your boss) will sue you about this! ha ha I'll put the cream in his coffee, and go visit with your father right now. SQ: The basic visual "facts" of your kitchen -- the flow of space, the finishes, the colors, the combination of glazed and unglazed cabinets and open shelves -- registered indelibly with me when you first posted your installed counters. I am delighted to find that they are just as lovely and subtle and distinctive as I recalled them.

Great, great, GREAT adaptation of space. It all works perfectly together.

Susie- It looks amazing! Just like your plan and so pretty :)

I love the two colors on the cabinetry and the way you picked up the green, in the powder room, which is adorable, by the way! The peninsula area worked out just like you said...perfect for parties and entertaining. I think one of my favorite details is the open shelves and your coffee station is a great idea.

It's such a warm and friendly kitchen, but still quite elegant and I'm guessing it fits you, perfectly!

I'm back. I love the green...the pantry area...wish I had done that instead of what I did around /over my fridge. I may yet have it all closed in some day. I love your bar area !! Very nice. And again the open shelves...I have them and am very fond of the look. Oh and that sweet bathroom redo...very nice. So light and airy the whole reno. You did a great job. And I like the way you organized your show and tell...c

Thanks for your kind comments. I actually don't even have the words to tell you exactly how much the kitchen has exceeded my expectations. It truly is everything I wanted and more!

First of all, my dream of opening up the two very distinct rooms into one - I really did achieve it. Or at least I did as far as I'm concerned. If you are standing in the farthest coner of my "old" breakfast room (right by my bar) you are definitely still standing in the same room as the person standing at the sink. You can have a conversation. You are in the same room.

Second, the peninsula is just what I wanted. My family uses it constantly. Breakfast. A cup of coffee. A weekend lunch. Dinner. My daughter studies there sometimes. My husband and I sit and chat. I've had a little dinner party for 8 ladies and that's where we sat for our cocktail hour. I'm sitting at it typing this response right now while my dinner finishes cooking. And I love the way it looks. To me, it fits perfectly. To me, it looks like the room could have been designed this way as something newly built.

My bar area is a huge bonus for me. First of all, I just love the idea. I have 2 chairs there so you can actually sit there if you wanted. (No, there's not any overhang like on a real "bar," but it just works.) I love looking at it. It sort of speaks to me and says "let's entertain!"

As a matter of fact, I've offered up my house to host our work holiday party. Fifty for a buffet dinner. I can't wait. (No - I won't be doing the cooking, although I probably wouldn't mind. It will be catered.)

I'm still totally in love with my Blanco sink. It does make me happy every time I look at it...even with our troubled history (the infamous "crack" and replacement!) My husband loves that sink as well.

As a matter of fact, my husband loves everything about the kitchen. He loves to "brag" about how he didn't have to pay someone to design it. I did it all on my own. (Yup, I always fess up and give credit to my peeps here on GW!)

He loves the beadboard tile - although somewhere along the line that became something we found "together." Not how I remember it, but that's OK. Loves our wood floor. Loves the paint color. And the leathered granite. Loves the different type of cabinet hardware. The two colors for the cabinets. The quantity, placement and style of the pendants. All of the things I mentioned are things he wasn't always so sure I was going the right way with. Luckily, I guess he does trust my judgement. And I don't have to tell you how many of these ideas came straight from this forum.

So what do you think? Am I in love with my new kitchen, or what? I've said it countless times to people when they see it: I really don't think I'd change one thing as far as my choices.

kawh - Those are from Ikea. A bargain at $59. And yes, very sturdy. I started with 4. Almost immediately I realized I wanted 2 more. Then just last week, I decided I wanted 2 more! When I had that little dinner for 8, I realized that I wanted 8 stools so that we can all sit around the peninsula. Six people were sitting and two were standing that night - I saw that there was plenty of room for the 2 final stools.

One thing I have to say though: I couldn't find the stools on the IKEA site before I went to get the last two. It appeared as if they no longer offered them. My husband and I just took a ride (we're very close) and they had 4 more there. I was very happy to pick-up my final 2. If you were interested in a wood tone (not white) they did have those still available on the site. FYI, they are called "Ingolf."

That's a really beautiful kitchen! I love it all, but especially the bar/hutch and the island built into the wall like that. Great use of space. Congratulations on your wonderful new kitchen. :-)

Count me in as one of your admirers of your kitchen and breakfast room remodel. I followed your progress from the beginning, as your journey began right around the time I discovered the Garden Web, and your introduction to the project you were undertaking, convinced me I could do this as well! By golly, you realized your vision, and met the challenges along the way with grace and courage. I'm proud of you! and we all know how beguiling we can be....to sway the vote, lets say to our perspective ;) BTW how do you like your GE Cafe range? Oh, and I love the coffee station! as one who frequents WaWa daily for a 24 oz, and spoken as a true HazelNUT!

Susie, I love the changes you made to your kitchen and I love the two types of hardware which I want to do to my kitchen. I love all the appliance upgrades, the style of your cabinets, your clock, how you opened up the room with all that light and room, and just the overall beautiful look. Thanks for sharing and I am glad your husband is so proud of you since you did design the kitchen yourself with ideas from all of us but it is still your design.

MileHighDiva - the cabinets are green - sage green. I love the color, as you can probably see since I brought it right into my powder room!!

Colorfast - the pendants (both small and the double) came from 2 different places, but the brand is "Maxim." The single came from Capital Lighting and the double came from Lighting Universe.

Pamike - I too am a flavored coffee "nut" (more of a pumpkin girl myself!!) I really do love the convenience of the whole coffee station set-up.

Thank you so much for sharing your finished kitchen with us. It's absolutely gorgeous. For me, the layout is particularly inspirational, as I am considering doing something similar with my layout. I have a breakfast room that goes essentially unused that I think would greatly benefit from a similar peninsula setup. I'm very pleased to hear that the kitchen is working out perfectly for you and that the two rooms feel like a single room/space now with the changes. If possible, could you share the clearances on each side of the peninsula?

Oooh, I love your kitchen! It looks like a kitchen I would be happy to live in - I love your colours, they look beautiful together. How did you pick them out? I really love the sink wall - the lights, faucet, hardware - just perfect together, open shelves next to a window - love them too. Great job - enjoy!!

I love questions that I can provide a quick answer to!!

Our paint color is Benjamin Moore - Pottery Barn, Coastal Sand.

The cabinets are from Conestoga - Chesapeake and Sage (both with a coffee glaze)

My hardware is all picked-up right out of the bins at Lowes

I just did some quick measurements - the seating area behind the peninsula is 29" (probably a little less than it should be, but it's worked out fine.) Usually my 2 kids are there (both skinny 20-somethings, but I've had fuller-figure pals in those seats and they've been quite comfortable.)

From the corner of the peninsula to kitchen wall is 42" - plenty of room.

For people who have trudged through ALL of my posts over the months, I'm sure they must realize how wonderful it feels to hear all of these nice things, especially about my layout!! I definitely struggled with that. I was so concerned that I wasn't going to be able get the 2 rooms to have that combined feel. I kept telling myself that I'd do the best I could, and that however it ended up was better than the way it was - just one small opening between working kitchen and breakfast room. Conversation between the two rooms was pretty much impossible.

It was suggested that putting the peninsula (or an island which I also toyed with) would look "odd" or forced. Like I wanted a peninsula and just stuck it in even though it didn't fit. I really was truly conflicted. In the end, I decided to go with my gut, trust my own feelings, and I have to say I couldn't be happier. (Of course it helped alot that my contractor and my cabinet guy both thought the layout was fine.)

pricklypearcactus - if you have some drawings/layouts, I'd definitely suggest posting them here. People will definitely have great ideas. There were plenty of kind souls who gave me great suggestions and ideas for my layout. Having the peninsula come off of the wall was directly from someone here (and I apologize that I don't remember from whom!)
