Geraniums could help control devastating Japanese beetle
Comments (29)I use the beneficial nematodes and milky spore. I say that the beetles were "bearable" in about 5 years. A number of years ago I tried spraying with an antitranspirant ( WiltPruf) to which I had added some Neem (that contains Azadirachtin) and another experiment when I added garlic to the WiltPruf. What I had hoped for in my experiment was that by coating the leaves with garlic juice (or Neem) in WiltPruf, the beetles when they landed on the coated leaves would have no reason to take a bite - their sense of touch would tell them that they landed on a plastic leaf and their sense of smell would tell them that it was a garlic leaf or a Neem leaf. Unfortunately, I do not have the facilities/time to set up controlled tests. I just have my observations that Japanese Beetles were not as much of a problem, for me, as they were before I tried the experimental sprays. The following is from the review: Title: Biology and Management of the Japanese Beetle Authors: Daniel A. Potter and David W. Held Authors affiliation: Department of Entomology, Univ. of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky. Published in: Annu. Rev. Entomol., volumn 47, pages 175-205, (2002). "Plant-Derived Antifeedants Metzger and Grant applied extracts of 390 JB-resistant plant species to apple and peach leaves to test for protection from JB. Although a few extracts seemed somewhat repellent, the tests were not extensive enough to be conclusive (47). Feeding on sassafras was deterred by extracts of nonripe holly fruits (Ilex opaca), which contain high levels of saponins (91). Extracts of neem seeds (Azadirachta indica) containing the limonoid azadirachtin were strongly deterrent (108). Topical application of such extracts was toxic to JB larvae, causing death and severe deformity, or disrupting development to the adult stage (112). Although commercial formulations deterred feeding by JB in laboratory choice tests (68, 71), weekly applications of neem-based products did not adequately protect crabapple trees or roses exposed to high JB populations in the field (68). Similarly, microencapsulated pyrethrum derived from Tanacetum cinerariifolium did not reduce defoliation of field-grown Himalayan birches, nor did commercial extracts of garlic (Allium sativum), cayenne pepper (Capsicum anuum), or neem (195)."...See MoreAgonizing over this decision! Comments (3)We have the Monogram 36" rangetop, 30" double convection oven with Pro handles and the 42" Monogram hood insert. We are happy with them.It did freak me out when we had company over and the hood turned itself on all by itself--turns out its a safety feature. If the range below gets too hot, it automatically turns on and runs until the temperature falls below the auto threshold. In it's defense, I was using 5-6 burners all at once and I probably should have turned it on myself long before. I really liked the Thermador rangetop look and the star shaped burners, but I couldn't handle the clicking the burners make on simmer (the burners cycle on and off continuously making an annoying clicking sound as they cycle.) Mom has a Thermador double oven that's 7 years old--they've already had to replace the control panel mother board and that was enough for me to take a chance on the Momogram. Like Dodge59 mentions above, most of us have multiple brands in our kitchens. While have Monogram for cooking, we have 2 KitchenAid DWs and a Kenmore Elite badged Samsung refrigerator. Hope this helps!...See MoreBR almost finished; pls help with shower enclosure decision
Comments (22)Lauren -- thanks much, we are trying to get our DIY/pro mix to "take" in our 6 x 10.5ish room! Agree we may end up with 1 fixed if budget constraints get in the way, but seems like it'd be a shame. 1) Window credit goes to tiler, though we made his job harder by forcing him to design from the full run of 6 x 6 tiles between the window. All cuts relate to that, for better or worse. 2) Yep, leaded glass -- I found/fell in love with the salvage doors years back (not in my house, alas) and basically designed the bathroom around 'em. Fell a little less in love with them after spending hours using progressively more toxic cleaners on the decades of mineral etc deposits before sending them off to the cabinetmaker. And of course after priming and painting (and painting) the cab boxes. But I'm feeling the love return, ha. 3) Oh, glass tile would have been too easy, ha. You know I love my aqua iridescent glass mosaic backsplash, but Mr Vix and I both feel in love with a ceramic liner topped with oyster shell slivers. Luckily the bath is small and our field tile was rock bottom in price, sigh. HEY MARISA -- No need to worry about being lonely while all others finish -- we just went to install our sink and the GC's plumber didn't seem to take our vanity shelf configuration into account, so we'll probably have to call (another!) pro for help. No running water for meeeeeeee though it's nice to have it out of the den (though its mirror needs to join it!):...See MoreFaucet for super single sink w/offset drain?
Comments (6)Our faucet is a Delta Pilar touch model, with pull-down sprayer. The one here is chrome, but there's a stainless finish available that would go with satin nickel; it's just over $400. Delta has several other models with the same features (the magnetized head that keeps the sprayer locked in is particularly worth it). One is 'Addison', can't remember names of others. I'm completely happy with it. Despite the arc, it's not very splashy, at least in flow mode. The sprayer has a switch between flow and spray that you don't have to hold down while using, which makes it very easy to rinse out the big sink and drive debris into the drain strainer (we don't have a garbage disposal). The touch feature has spoiled me for other faucets....See Moreleela4
