Sink not under a window?

I'm planning a full kitchen remodel, basically making it bigger. Under my new plan, logistically I think the sink should be moved so it's in a more centralized location. That would put the sink underneath a cabinet.

Do any of you have a sink that is not underneath a window? Do you care?

I personally don't care. I'm not looking out the window when I washing dishes - I'm looking down at the dishes. But I'm thinking about resale value for the home. Off hand, I can't think of any home I have seen where the sink is not underneath a window ... when there is a window in the kitchen.

Our cleanup sink isn't under a window, but it doesn't have a cabinet over it either. We have a "hood" that echoes the hood over our cooktop area, and it houses downlights. If you do have a cabinet, I'd advise you to put it higher than usual for headroom. I think that's part of the reason why sinks have been located at windows: it's a space that would not have a cabinet, plus it supplies light. Some European kitchens have a rack as the bottom of a cabinet over the sink, so dishes can dripdry there out of sight.

Hey,
Our sink won't be under a window and our current one is also not under a window (a p.i.t.a. corner location from the p.o.s which will change). It is not a hard and fast rule about needing a window by a sink.
We are putting chrome shelves above our entire sink area so as to not close in the space above the sink and to be able to put our daily drinking glasses and plates for easy access. We will also make sure to have a light fixture above for visual and lighting purposes. Our kitchen will have several skylights as well, so the fact that there will be no window should not be an issue for us. I think as long as you balance the need for light and ergonomics, you can do whatever works best in your space.

lukkiirish - Thanks - As usual I'm having issues with the form vs. function part of the overall design again. I do like the graceful arc and pull down sprayer and I have collected quite a few photos to give me an aesthetic to ponder. Will go check out the Aberdeen - we've always had great wear and longevity from Moen faucets over the years, so we know they're extremely reliable. lexluthor - Nice corner sink - had one time played with the idea of having one. The Vinnata is one I have been considering. justmeinsd - Now that's a serious faucet! It has a very professional chef quality to it. DH might have a higher culinary expectation from me with that one! ;-). zelmar - Yours has a nice, balanced look to it in front of the window and may be approx. where mine might be, altbeit on a smaller window. Thanks! I have about 2 weeks to make a decision, so I'm welcoming all ideas and pics. GW is such a great forum, nice to have so much information in one spot.

Ajsmama, you know I never even noticed that the gazebo emphasizes that the sink is off center in the second picture. I guess the perspective on the view outside shifts as one moves about the kitchen, even a little-- the gazebo appears to be to the left of the faucet in the first photo. I guess another reason it has never bothered me is that I don't look at this window straight on from a distance in my layout, and if I'm actually at the sink I'm taking in the whole view of the garden and woods. Like many others here, I was oblivious to my off-center sink for more than a decade until I realized the asymmetry when measuring for new cabinets. I briefly considered using a blind corner cabinet in order to center the sink, but the loss in functionality wasn't worth it to me.

Do you have an apron/farmhouse sink? I have a seam right in the middle behind mine and am quite happy with it. Not noticeable at all despite being in front of a large window. I haven't seen a seam across a non-apron sink, so I'm not sure how that would look. Probably much more noticeable. Honestly, though, I've had seams to the right of my sink (previous kitchen) and also near the L corner (current kitchen, previous granite countertop) and they've all been fine. I think it has more to do with your fabricator and how well the seam blends in. So if he thinks the movement will match better near the corner, I'd probably lean that way.

Just curious why you would want to move the sink to the island? Personally that’s not my preference because then dirty dishes pile up on the island. I’ve also seen 2 sinks- one for washing hands/filling water glasses on island, regular one on counter.

I was in a glitzy showroom the other day and there were some beautiful sink and countertop displays against walls. They were so nice it got me thinking it would free up my design process so much if I went that route. These sink areas were gorgeous, mind you. The one that stands out in my mind had a hand carved marble basin with marble counter, pretty marble mosaic tiles on the wall, and, an important factor, good undercabinet lighting. The wall cabinets above the sink had glass doors, so had an open feel, and the lights were bright and cheery, highlighting the beauty of the materials.

I think the important factors if you're going to site a sink somewhere other than under a window are 1) a very good overall design, so the sink is well integrated as part of the whole, and 2) good lighting above the sink.

I have seen lots of pictures of the situation you describe that look very good.
